OBJECTIVES: To introduce the clinical practice and experience of using a modified silo technique to treat neonates with severe gastroschisis in three referral medical centers in Shanghai, China.

Large and complicated hernias are doubly challenging; not only must the hernia be treated according to a degree of severity, but it also necessary to prevent compartment syndrome during reintegration of the viscera. Possible complications range from intestinal necrosis to perforation of the hollow organs. We are presenting the rare case of a duodenal perforation in a man with large strangulated hernia.

Amniotic band syndrome is a rare disorder, which consists of a combination of malformations in which the main feature is the existence of an amniotic band that can envelop the limbs, the body wall, and/or the viscera. In patients presenting with gunshot wounds, a high clinical suspicion of injury to vasculature and viscera remote from the projectile track is paramount. We present a case of a 17 year old male who sustained a gunshot wound to his abdomen and subsequently developed a right external iliac artery contusion requiring surgery as an indirect effect of the pressure wave from the bullet.

The so-called pseudo-acute abdomen has been reported in acute leukemia, both at diagnosis or relapse. The clinical presentation may be misleading and life-threatening, due to the possible infiltration of any abdominal viscera. The authors present a series of eight patients and emphasize the management specificities of such patients and the possibility of long-term remissions, regardless of the severity of the initial presentation.

Fibrosing mediastinitis is caused by a proliferation of fibrous tissue in the mediastinum with encasement of mediastinal viscera and compression of mediastinal bronchovascular structures. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) may occur as a severe complication of the disease. Herein, we report a patient diagnosed with fibrosing mediastinitis and pulmonary hypertension, whose imaging tests showed obstruction of right pulmonary artery and veins.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease is a rare autosomal dominant disease with incomplete penetrance and variable expression and is characterized by diffuse haemangioblastomas of the central nervous system and viscera. The majority of the central nervous system lesions are located in the cerebellum. This report describes the successful management with epidural anaesthesia of a woman with a term gestation, von Hippel-Lindau disease and cerebellar haemangioblastoma.

The association between splenic abnormalities, congenital heart defects, and abnormalities in the location and shape of other viscera is well established in the literature. Intestinal atresia is rarely found with either the polysplenia or asplenia syndromes. Initially, intra-abdominal contamination with endogenous bacteria produces peritonitis and septicemia. If the infection is localized and the patient survives, the late phase is usually abscess formation. Treatment consists of prompt, thorough surgical drainage, with repair of the diseased or traumatized viscera, as well as the use of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative antibiotics aimed at both aerobic and anaerobic infecting microflora.

Therapeutic doses of oral anticoagulants have been associated with spontaneous hemorrhage and rupture of apparently normal abdominal viscera. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of such rupture involving the liver. The patient had sudden severe epigastric pain and signs of acute abdomen and shock. Discrete microscopic changes in the liver may precede massive hemorrhage.

Intravenous injection of staphylococci produced a marked, transient granulocytopenia inrabbits. Leukopenia was rapidly followed by return of polymorphonuclear leukocytes to the peripheral blood, and normal circulating granulocyte levels were reestablished within 20 to 40 minutes. Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber (KTW) syndrome is a rare syndrome characterized by hemangiomata, varicose veins, and both bony and soft tissue hemihypertrophy. Abdominal viscera affected by ipsilateral hemangiomata include colon, liver, spleen, jejunum, kidney, and liver. We report a case of this syndrome that presented with severe anemia and extensive jeujenal varices without any other significant digestive tract lesions.

Sarcoidosis frequently involves the abdomen, although imaging studies often fail to demonstrate disease. The most common computed tomography (CT) findings in abdominal sarcoidosis are hepatosplenomegaly and retroperitoneal adenopathy, followed by focal low-attenuation lesions of the liver and spleen. Other abdominal viscera are involved infrequently. We present four cases of abdominal sarcoidosis demonstrating a range of CT findings.
