INTRODUCTION: Ocular and vision defects are common among school going children. Vision disorders, especially refractive errors are the main disabilities of children and the leading cause of handicapping conditions of childhood. The present study was conducted to find out ocular morbidity among students of government schools of Kathmandu valley.

METHODS: Visual acuity, refraction and the amount of heterophoria on near (33 cm) fixation were measured before and after 3 weeks of spectacle-wearing in 30 hyperopic amblyopic children with heterophoria. The control group consisted of 20 emmetropic children age-matched to the patients.

The axial chromatic aberration of the eye was determined as in previous studies by finding the lens required to eliminate or minimize blur of the fixation target when it is illuminated by a series of monochromatic sources. A patient with ocular syphilis is presented. She experienced deterioration in vision following the commencement of treatment due to a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. This is a transient febrile illness that can occur in patients after the first adequate dose of an anti-microbial drug to treat infectious diseases such as syphilis, Lyme disease and relapsing fever. However, a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction occurring in a patient receiving treatment for ocular syphilis can be serious, resulting in the rapid loss of vision.

OBJECTIVES: Identification of the targets of radiation damage after radiosurgical treatment of ocular melanoma will potentially allow for sparing of vision with improved treatment planning.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients with ocular melanoma, who had useful vision before therapy, were treated with gamma knife stereotactic radiosurgery with curative intent. Dosimetric analysis of functional targets of radiation damage including the fovea, optic nerve, lens, and iris was carried out. Optic neuropathy due to cat scratch disease is a relatively infrequent occurrence associated with macular star formation and is characterized by sudden painless loss of vision mostly unilateral. Bartonella henselae is well recognized as the etiologic agent in cat scratch disease. Ocular complications of the disease occur in up to 10% of patients and include neuroretinitis. Ocular bartonelosis is usually self-limited with complete or near-complete recovery of vision in otherwise healthy patients. A case of a boy with neuroretinitis caused by B. henselae is reported.
