Water soluble vitamins in chronic hemodialysis patients and need for supplementation.

Forty-three patients on chronic hemodialysis who before the present study had only received a low-dose supplement of folic and ascorbic acid were studied prospectively for one year. After baseline values were obtained in month one, increasing doses of postdialysis vitamin supplements were prescribed for the vitamins which were found to be insufficient in order to determine the minimal amount of oral postdialysis supplement necessary to normalize vitamin levels. According to our results no systematic supplement was indicated for biotin, riboflavin or vitamin B12. For folic acid and vitamin C, s

A robust method for simultaneous determination of eight B vitamins in human serum by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry.

The level of vitamin B group in human serum is an important index of human health. Among B vitamins, cyanocobalamin in serum is unstable and its content is extremely low. Rapid and simultaneous detection of multiple B vitamins including cyanocobalamin is a challenge. Herein, we have developed a rapid and stable method that can realize the determination of thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinamide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxic acid, biotin, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, and cyanocobalamin simultaneously in 6 min. The method was established based on protein precipitation with methanol and then chromatograph

Status of non-thiamine B-vitamins in children with septic shock from a lower middle-income country: a case-control study.

The role of B-vitamins in septic shock is gaining attention, especially among patients with deficiencies. However, evidence beyond thiamine remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the status of riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, folate, and cobalamin in children with septic shock in a low- and middle-income country (LMIC) setting, and to explore their potential association with patient outcomes. We enrolled 79 consecutive patients (aged 6 months-12 years) with fluid-refractory septic shock from July 2018 to December 2019. We also included 22 sibling controls and 64 external controls from an

Non-causal relationship of polycystic ovarian syndrome with homocysteine and B vitamins: evidence from a two-sample Mendelian randomization.

OBJECTIVE: Previous observational studies have identified a correlation between elevated plasma homocysteine (Hcy) levels and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This study aimed to determine whether a causal relationship exists between Hcy and PCOS at the genetic level. METHODS: A two-sample Mendelian Randomization (TSMR) study was implemented to assess the genetic impact of plasma levels of Hcy, folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6 on PCOS in individuals of European ancestry. Independent single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with Hcy (n=12), folate (n=2), vitamin B12 (n=10), and vi

Homocysteine-lowering interventions for preventing cardiovascular events.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease, which includes coronary artery disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease, is a leading cause of death worldwide. Homocysteine is an amino acid with biological functions in methionine metabolism. A postulated risk factor for cardiovascular disease is an elevated circulating total homocysteine level. The impact of homocysteine-lowering interventions, given to patients in the form of vitamins B6, B9 or B12 supplements, on cardiovascular events has been investigated. This is an update of a review previously published in 2009, 2013, and 2015. OBJECTIVES: T

Changes in the levels of certain vitamins from B group under conditions of vitamin deficiency.

In experiments on rabbits the levels of vitamins B1, B2, B6, PP and pantothenic acid were determined to establish the grade and the sequence of their disappearance from the blood and liver in states of exogenous and endogenous vitamin deficiency. The experiments were carried out in which vitamin deficiency was produced by removing vitamins from the diet or by giving the rabbits antibiotics of different activity spectrum when the animals were kept on a diet without vitamins. Determinations of vitamin levels were performed using microbiological methods. It was found that the time after which cha

Associations of atrophic gastritis and proton-pump inhibitor drug use with vitamin B-12 status, and the impact of fortified foods, in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Atrophic gastritis (AG) and use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) result in gastric acid suppression that can impair the absorption of vitamin B-12 from foods. The crystalline vitamin B-12 form, found in fortified foods, does not require gastric acid for its absorption and could thus be beneficial for older adults with hypochlorhydria, but evidence is lacking. OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations of AG and PPI use with vitamin B-12 status, and the potential protective role of fortified foods, in older adults. METHODS: Eligible participants (n = 3299) not using vitamin B-12 supp

Determination of serum holotranscobalamin concentrations with the AxSYM active B(12) assay: cut-off point evaluation in the clinical laboratory.

BACKGROUND: A reliable early marker is required for diagnosis of cobalamin deficiency. We calculated an appropriate holotranscobalamin (HoloTC) cut-off point for identifying cobalamin deficiency using an immunoenzymatic assay. METHODS: Determination of the cut-off threshold and correlation between HoloTC and the other diagnostic parameters routinely used for vitamin B(12) deficiency [total vitamin B(12) (tB(12)), folate, homocysteine] were measured in 250 routine blood specimens from 107 men (mean age 59.0+/-18.8 years) and 143 women (mean age 54.2+/-23.1 years). The inclusion criterion was s

Measuring holotranscobalamin II, an early indicator of negative vitamin B12 balance, by radioimmunoassay in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular disease.

Circulating homocysteine is a risk factor of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Hyperhomocysteinemia may be an early indicator for vitamin B12 disorders because cobalamin is a cofactor in the remethylation process of homocysteine. Serum holotranscobalamin (holoTC II) becomes decreased before the development of metabolic dysfunction. In this study, we assessed circulating holoTC II to estimate the diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency in the first ischemic cerebrovascular attack. We also compared the efficacy of the measurement of plasma holoTC II with the other standard biochemical and h

[Tropical or non-tropical sprue?].

A 57-year-old Dutch man presented with weight loss and fatigue 6 months after a visit to West Papua, when he had suffered from serious diarrhoea. Macrocytic anaemia and vitamin B12 deficiency were diagnosed. A gastroduodenoscopy with biopsies of the small intestine was performed revealing no macroscopic abnormalities but partial villous atrophy was found microscopically, suggesting tropical sprue or coeliac disease. Antibodies against endomysium and tissue transglutaminase were negative, ruling out coeliac disease. The patient was successfully treated with vitamin B12, folic acid and doxycycli

The Role of Water-Soluble Vitamins and Vitamin D in Prevention and Treatment of Depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder in Adults.

Depression is a major global health concern expected to worsen by 2030. In 2019, 28 million individuals were affected by depressive disorders. Dietary and supplemental vitamins show overall favorable preventative and therapeutic effects on depression. B vitamins are crucial for neurological function and mood regulation. Deficiencies in these vitamins are linked to depression. Studies on individual B vitamins show promise in improving depressive symptoms, particularly thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. Vitamin C deficiency may heighten depressive symptoms, but its exact role is not fully

B vitamins and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD): a systematic review of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: B vitamins are crucial cofactors in metabolic regulation; however, their role in the pathogenesis of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains unclear. Evidence for individual B vitamins is often contradictory. This systematic review evaluated the findings of observational studies examining the association between B vitamin intake and MASLD risk, severity, and outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published up to January 2026, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Sy
