IV phencyclidine (PCP) self-administration was studied in five rhesus monkeys. The animals were given 23 h per day access with each respose producing an injection. Performance varies considerably at weaning, perhaps in part because it is associated with the personality traits of the animals. Prenatal stress or exposure to elevated levels of glucocorticoids (GCs) can impair specific neurobehavioral circuits leading to alterations in emotional processes later in life. Fifteen adult dogs were divided into three groups randomly in the experiment. This study assessed the practicality of using autologous freeze-dried fascia to augment the vocal fold. Freeze-dried autologous fascia was injected into the vocal fold and skin of dogs in order to monitor sequential histological changes. Fascia lata was harvested from six adult dogs. After freeze-drying, minced fascia suspended in hyaluronic acid was injected subcutaneously into the abdominal wall and directly into the vocal fold. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Various animal models have been employed to investigate vocal fold (VF) and phonatory function. However, biomechanical testing techniques to characterize vocal fold structural properties vary and have not compared critical properties across species. We adapted a nondestructive, automated indentation mapping technique to simultaneously quantify VF structural properties (VF cover layer and intact VF) in commonly used species based on the hypothesis that VF biomechanical properties are largely preserved across species.
