Shoulder Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of the Suprascapular Neuropathy in Athletes.

PURPOSE: Shoulder pain and weakness are common symptoms in athletes who play sports connected with overhead throwing. Suprascapular neuropathy may be one of the reason of such signs. The aim of the study was to find out if ultrasound examination of the shoulder in athletes reveals signs of suprascapular neuropathy. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which 67 professional volleyball, handball and rugby players of polish teams without shoulder disorders, which have played sport for 10 or more years, were included. An ultrasound examination of both shoulders was performed. Excluding cri

[Secondary impingement syndrome in athletes].

Dysfunction of the shoulder joint is based not only on anatomic conditions. The consideration of the special kinesiology of the shoulder helps to understand the shoulder pathology. This mainly applies to young "overhead athletes" like swimmers, handball-, basketball-, volleyball-, and racketplayers. These disciplines cause stress on the anterior joint structures (capsule, ligaments, labrum, subscapularis tendon) and lead to anterior instability. This includes anterior subluxation or even dislocation. Finally, an impingement syndrome with the typical symptoms can frequently result from these co

One Session of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy-Induced Modulation on Tendon Shear Modulus is Associated with Reduction in Pain.

The aim of the study was to examine the immediate effect of 1 session of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on patellar tendon stiffness and to explore the relationship between the change in tendon stiffness and the pain intensity. Thirty-four male athletes aged 22.2 ± 3.8 with patellar tendinopathy were recruited. The participants were randomized into ESWT and sham groups. The ESWT group received 1500 impulses of ESWT at 4 Hz with maximal tolerable pain intensity and the sham group received intensities below 0.08 mJ/mm2. Supersonic Shearwave Imaging (SSI) was used to measure tendon shear

The effects of multiaxial and uniaxial unstable surface balance training in college athletes.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of 2 different types of unstable surface balance training (uniaxial on a rocker board [RB] and multiaxial on a dynadisc [DD]) on balance in division 1 collegiate athletes in sports that are at high risk for ankle sprains. Subjects (n = 36) consisted of male soccer players and female volleyball and soccer players who were equally and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups (CON, DD, and RB). Balance training consisting of balancing on 1 leg on either the RB or DD, while repeatedly catching a 1-kg ball was performed 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Ba

[Exertional syncope: A diagnosis of long QT syndrome. A practice-oriented case report on risk stratification and management].

We present the case of a 22-year-old medical student who experienced repeated episodes of syncope during physical exertion. Ini-tial investigations, including a neurological assessment and cardiac examinations involving electrocardiograms (ECGs) and Holter monitoring, were normal. During a subsequent volleyball match, however, she suffered cardiac arrest and required resuscitation and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED). Analysis of the AED recording revealed ventricular fibrillation (VF) and prompted further diagnostic testing. Long QT syndrome (LQTS) was diagnosed b

Syringomyelia due to thoracic spinal stenosis with ossified ligamentum flavum--case report.

A 50-year-old male presented with back pain and numbness of the lower extremities persisting for 10 years. He had played volleyball for a long period until recently. He had no history of meningitis or traumatic injury. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a syringomyelia located in the region from T8 to T9 without contrast enhancement or Chiari malformations. Computed tomography showed T9-10 spinal stenosis caused by the right enlarged ossified yellow ligament. Decompressive laminectomy was performed and the ossified ligament removed. Due to the finding of arachnoid thickening and adhesions dur

Knee joint biomechanics under external focus instructions promoting a quiet, safe and soft landing.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are common in young female athletes, often occurring during landing tasks. Attentional focus instructions may influence landing biomechanics and reduce injury risk, but comparative effects of different external focus (EF) cues remain unclear. METHODS: Twelve novice female volleyball players (age: 13.6 ± 0.6 years) performed double-leg drop landings from a height of 50  cm under four attentional focus conditions: (1) as quietly as possible, (2) as safely as possible, (3) as softly as possible, and (4) a no-focus control. Tension band plating of a nonunion anterior tibial stress fracture in an athlete.

The authors present a rare technique of tension band plating of the anterior tibia in the setting of a nonunion stress fracture. Surgical management with an intramedullary nail is a viable and proven option for treating such injuries. However, in treating elite athletes, legitimate concerns exist regarding the surgical disruption of the extensor mechanism and the risk of anterior knee pain associated with intramedullary nail use. The described surgical technique demonstrates the use of tension band plating as an effective treatment of delayed union and nonunion anterior tibial stress fractures

Treatment option in a SLAP-related ganglion cyst resulting in suprascapular nerve entrapment.

INTRODUCTION: Our report shows a rare case of suprascapular nerve palsy due to a SLAP-related ganglion cyst resulting in isolated weakness of the infraspinatus muscle. CASE REPORT: We report on a 31-year old volleyball player with severe shoulder pain. A ganglion cyst was excised in an open procedure and was completely resolved in a postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). But the patient again had pain and disability 7 months after this procedure. A renewed MRI scan showed a cystic mass in the spinoglenoid notch. An electromyography revealed an isolated lesion of the suprascapular ner

Epidemiology of jumper's knee.

Jumper's knee is a typical functional overload injury because it affects those athletes who submit their knee extensor mechanisms to intense and repeated stress, e.g. volleyball and basketball players, high and long jumpers. According to the classification of Perugia and colleagues, it is an insertional tendinopathy affecting, in order of frequency, the insertion of the patellar tendon into the patella (65% of cases), attachment of the quadriceps tendon to the patella (25%) and the attachment of the patellar tendon to the tibial tuberosity (10%). The frequent occurrence of this injury in athle

Clay Shoveler's Fracture: A Pain in the Neck.

Clay shoveler's fracture is a stable spinous process fracture commonly occurring at the seventh cervical vertebrae. The name originated in Australia during the 1930s, after many reports of similar injuries among clay workers who suffered fractures due to a sudden flexion force on their neck and back muscles, hence the name "clay shoveler's fracture." This fracture may occur as a consequence of a direct blow/trauma, a contraction of the shoulder muscles, and sudden extreme movements of the neck influenced by additional factors presented throughout the article. Clay shoveler's fracture mechanism

The prevention of ankle sprains in sports. A systematic review of the literature.

To assess the published evidence on the effectiveness of various approaches to the prevention of ankle sprains in athletes, we used textbooks, journals, and experts in the field of sports medicine to identify citations. We identified 113 studies reporting the risk of ankle sprains in sports, methods to provide support, the effect of these interventions on performance, and comparison of prevention efforts. The most common risk factor for ankle sprain in sports is history of a previous sprain. Ten citations of studies involving athletes in basketball, football, soccer, or volleyball compared alt
