Bring back the tubal: An intervention to provide postpartum tubal ligation in the underserved population.

We aimed to improve educational awareness of postpartum bilateral tubal ligation (PPBTL), which we defined as a 15% improvement between pre-/post-intervention questionnaire scores. We followed patients desiring and undergoing PPBTL and reason for unfulfilled procedures from 2017-2018. OB/GYN, Nursing, and Anesthesia participated in educational sessions with pre-/post-intervention questionnaires. Comparing the first and latter six months after study initiation, PPBTLs performed increased from 39% to 54%. Fifty-two staff participated in the interventions, with a 21% improvement in scores (OB/GYN

Socioeconomic predictors of vulnerability to flood-induced displacement.

Floods displace an average of 12 million people every year, and are responsible for 54% of all disaster-induced displacements. Displacement risk scales with the vulnerability of exposed populations, but this vulnerability is poorly understood at a global scale. Here we show that measures of human development and rural areas explain more of the variance of displacement vulnerability than income levels measured by gross domestic product. We combine global flood and displacement data to estimate vulnerability, as the ratio of displacement to exposure, for over 300 historical flood events. We find

Disparities in Geographic Access to Cardiac Rehabilitation Among Socially Vulnerable Communities.

BACKGROUND: There is a dearth of research examining geographic disparities in access to cardiac rehabilitation (CR). We evaluated whether disparities in geographic access to CR exist among socially vulnerable communities, using the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). METHODS: Among 3113 US counties, we investigated relationships between SVI and number of hospitals with CR per 100 000 adults, modeled with SVI as a linear variable, and SVI and distance to the nearest county with CR facilities, modeled using spline terms for SVI. We used multivariable zero-inflated negative binomial regression mod

Mapping vulnerability for increased COVID-19 susceptibility and worse outcomes: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Infectious diseases can spread rapidly in the globalized world, and the complex intersection of individual, social, economic, and cultural factors make it difficult to identify vulnerabilities in the face of pandemics. METHODS: Therefore, this study aimed to identify vulnerability factors to infection and worse outcomes associated with COVID-19. This is a scoping review study of six databases that selected publications between 2019 and 2023, focusing on individual, social, and programmatic dimensions of vulnerability. The results were recorded in a spreadsheet and analyzed, cons

Understanding Inequalities Shaping Engagement With Cultural and Green Assets to Improve Mental Health for Underserved Communities: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Underserved communities including ethnic minorities, refugees and migrants, experience higher mental health needs than the general population, yet engage less with cultural and green community assets (CGCAs) that could support wellbeing. While access barriers are known, less is understood about the cultural meanings and processes underpinning inequalities shaping engagement. This study examined the cultural drivers and mechanisms of these inequalities and how they might be addressed to improve mental health. METHODS: A multi-site qualitative study in England with community voice

'Doctors do not know about Cystic Fibrosis': Examining structural vulnerability in the management of rare diseases in India.

Individuals living with rare diseases have conventionally been understood as being particularly vulnerable, which often promotes a negative and stigmatising interpretation of vulnerability. In this article, we embrace the framework of structural (health) vulnerability to gain a deeper understanding of the circumstances and factors contributing to adverse outcomes in the specific context of a Global South country, India, and a particular rare disease, Cystic Fibrosis (CF). By drawing on published materials and preliminary data from an evolving ethnographic research project, we contend that it i

High health system performance, low health system resilience: Navigating vulnerability - an illustrative example using Small and Island States.

BACKGROUND: While health system vulnerability and resilience are gaining traction among even the best-performing health systems in high-income countries, low-income countries have been concerned with such issues for some time. Small and island states grapple with substantial challenges, including being uniquely vulnerable to exogeneous shocks including climate disasters and economic shocks, which impact health system functionality and population health. As shocks are increasing in frequency and severity, S&IS may provide lessons applicable to high-income health systems. OBJECTIVE: We investig

Understanding vulnerability to flood-induced disasters: a comprehensive scoping review on at-risk individuals and evacuation challenges.

Flood-induced disasters are increasing in frequency and severity, with high-income countries (HICs) facing growing health, social, and operational challenges, particularly in managing and protecting vulnerable populations that are disproportionately affected. This scoping review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines, examined how vulnerability is defined, addressed, and operationalized in evacuation management during flood-induced disasters in HICs. A systematic search identified 98 peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2025. The analysis revealed critical gaps and inc…

Increasing Access to Cardiac Rehabilitation Services Among Disadvantaged Populations.

The Prince George's County Health Department encountered several challenges to increasing access to cardiac rehabilitation (CR) services among disadvantaged populations. They include excessive patient out-of-pocket costs; requirements that CR orders must be signed by a physician; provider reluctance to refer patients to CR, with most primary care providers preferring to refer clients to cardiologists for the latter to determine whether the patient needs CR referral; limited availability of CR programs; and difficulty identifying patients eligible for CR services. Making social protection a reality for people with TB: a perspective on new global guidance.

TB disproportionately affects poorer, vulnerable people and communities, and has severe social and economic impacts on those affected. However, many countries do not yet include social protection in their programmatic response to TB. Here, we provide a critical perspective on the guidance developed by the WHO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to help countries implement social protection programmes. The guidance emphasises the need for a multisectoral response to TB, and includes practical information on how to design appropriate social protection programmes that respond to the n

Syndemics: A theory in search of data or data in search of a theory?

The concept of a syndemic was proposed more than two decades ago to explain how large-scale social forces might give rise to co-occurring epidemics that synergistically interact to undermine health in vulnerable populations. This conceptual instrument has the potential to help policymakers and program implementers in their endeavors to improve population health. Accordingly, it has become an increasingly popular heuristic for advocacy, most notably in the field of HIV treatment and prevention. However, most empirical studies purporting to validate the theory of syndemics actually do no such th…

[Hepatitis C in prison: an opportunity for healthcare].

Prison inmates constitute a vulnerable population, in which socially excluded, poor and marginalized individuals are overrepresented and infectious diseases are more prevalent than in the general population. The poor health of inmates and recently released inmates is a rarely studied public health problem. The health trajectories of inmates living with the hepatitis C virus is an interesting case study to discuss public health interventions in prison. It is presented here as part of a socio-anthropological study of inmates and healthcare professionals in France. These trajectories shed light o

History, politics and vulnerability: explaining excess mortality in Scotland and Glasgow.

OBJECTIVES: High levels of excess mortality (i.e. that not explained by deprivation) have been observed for Scotland compared with England & Wales, and especially for Glasgow in comparison with similar post-industrial cities such as Liverpool and Manchester. Many potential explanations have been suggested. Based on an assessment of these, the aim was to develop an understanding of the most likely underlying causes. Note that this paper distils a larger research report, with the aim of reaching wider audiences beyond Scotland, as the important lessons learnt are relevant to other populations.

The Relationship Between Gambling and Homelessness: A Commentary on Sharman et al. (2014).

The relationship between problem gambling and homelessness is a little studied area in the gambling studies field. A recent study by Sharman et al. (J Gambl Stud, doi: 10.1007/s10899-014-9444-7, 2014) is the first quantitative study in Great Britain on this interesting and important topic. In this context, the study is to be commended and provides an empirical benchmark on which other studies can build. The study reported a problem gambling prevalence rate of 11.6% and is significantly higher than the problem gambling rate of the general population in Great Britain (which is <1%). However, giv

[The stigma of vulnerability and the autonomy fallacy in care. Ethical keys from a relational anthropology].

Vulnerability has become a bridging concept capable of traversing clinical bioethics, research ethics, and contemporary discussions on social justice, without a stable consensus on what the term exactly designates, what it normatively justifies, and how it is operationalized in specific contexts. This article offers an argumentative synthesis based on a systematic literature review (January 2015-August 2025) conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. This study, inspired by PRISMA, identifies four thematic areas encompassing the most significant ethical challenges and emerging approaches

Climate Change Vulnerability Assessment in Mangrove-Dependent Communities of Manoka Island, Littoral Region of Cameroon.

This study was conducted on Manoka Island (Littoral Region of Cameroon) with the aim of analyzing climate change vulnerability and local adaptation strategies based on the local community's perceptions and biophysical evidence. We used household surveys, focus group discussions, field observation, GIS, and remote sensing to collect data on variables of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Historical changes in rainfall and temperature, mangrove cover, and the occurrence of extreme climatic events were used as indicators of exposure. Property losses and income structure were used as in

Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution in Developing Countries.

The deleterious effects of ambient air pollution on human health have been consistently documented by many epidemiologic studies worldwide, and it has been calculated that globally at least seven million deaths are annually attributable to the effects of air pollution. The major air pollutants emitted into the atmosphere by a number of natural processes and human activities include nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter. In addition to the poor ambient air quality, there is increasing evidence that indoor air pollution also poses a serious threat to human health, e
