Cognitive Index Differences on the WISC-IV Among Children with Specific Learning Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, and a Clinically Evaluated Comparison Group: A Cross-Sectional Evaluation.

Children with specific learning disorder (SLD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may show cognitive differences. We compared WISC-IV scores in 130 children aged 7-13 years (32 SLD, 56 ADHD, 42 comparison) and examined associations with parental education. Groups differed in Verbal Comprehension, Working Memory, Processing Speed, and Full Scale IQ, but not Perceptual Reasoning. The SLD group scored lowest, the ADHD group showed an intermediate pattern, and the comparison group scored highest. Parental education was positively associated with all outcomes, whereas diagnostic-gr

[ELECTROPHYSIOLOGIC ANALYSIS OF MENTAL ARITHMETIC TASK BY THE "MINIMUM SPANNING TREE" METHOD].

GOALS: In the present study basic arithmetic induced rearrangements in functional connections of the brain were investigated by using graph theoretical analysis what becomes increasingly important both in theoretical neuroscience and also in clinical investigations. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: During mental arithmetic operations (working) memory plays an important role, but there are only a few studies in which an attempt was made to separate this effect from the process of arithmetic operations themselves. The goal of our study was to separate the neural networks involved in cognitive functions. ME

Influence of olanzapine on memory functions.

Even though memory dysfunction is not considered to be a diagnostic criterion for schizophrenia, results of a neuropsychological research indicate significant damage in mnestic functioning, especially in verbal memory (Saykin et al. 1991). This type of a disorder is recorded in patients with a first episode of schizophrenia, as well as in chronic patients (Saykin et al. 1994). These researches show that this deficit is not influenced by neuroleptics. Paulsen and associates suggest that the deficit of verbal learning in schizophrenia is related to difficulties in encoding retrieving information

Focal cognitive impairment in mitochondrial encephalomyopathies: a neuropsychological and neuroimaging study.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathies (ME) are a multisystemic group of diseases characterized by a wide range of biochemical and genetic mitochondrial defects with a variable mode of inheritance. We studied the neuropsychological profile, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data in a group of ME patients in order to look for common or specific cognitive defects and a possible correlation with related brain areas. Three main cognitive areas were assessed: general intelligence, memory functions and visuo-perceptual skills. Our sample included 16 M

Incidental and intentional recall in Parkinson's disease: an account based on diminished attentional resources.

The recall of common objects and their spatial location was examined in 65 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) under conditions in which available attentional resources were manipulated by secondary task demands. PD patients were impaired at item recall particularly under intentional learning conditions but were unimpaired at recall of spatial location. These findings were similar in newly diagnosed, untreated cases as well as patients who had suffered with the disease for an average of 9.6 years. Test performance was not improved by levodopa therapy, despite it benefiting motor control, an

Gender study of neuropsychological and neuromotor function in children with Tourette syndrome with and without attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Neuropsychological and neuromotor functions were compared between boys and girls with Tourette syndrome (TS only), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD only), Tourette syndrome with ADHD (TS+ADHD), and a comparison group, in an age (mean = 10 years) and IQ (Wechsler Full-Scale mean = 111) matched sample (n = 116). There were no timed-task neuromotor differences among the groups. Analyses of variance revealed a group x gender interaction for Letter Word Fluency and the Rapid Automatized Naming test. Girls with ADHD only were faster than boys on both tasks. When data for girls only wer

Cognitive deficit in 7-year-old children with prenatal exposure to methylmercury.

A cohort of 1022 consecutive singleton births was generated during 1986-1987 in the Faroe Islands. Increased methylmercury exposure from maternal consumption of pilot whale meat was indicated by mercury concentrations in cord blood and maternal hair. At approximately 7 years of age, 917 of the children underwent detailed neurobehavioral examination. Neuropsychological tests included Finger Tapping; Hand-Eye Coordination; reaction time on a Continuous Performance Test; Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised Digit Spans, Similarities, and Block Designs; Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test

Separating cognitive impairment in neurologically asymptomatic alcoholism from Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome: is the neuropsychological distinction justified?

Recent studies that have combined neuropathological data and clinical histories in a retrospective fashion have shown that Wernicke-Korsakoff neuropathology is often unsuspected antemortem and that, in terms of clinical presentation, it is more heterogeneous than previously assumed. Thus, many studies of neurologically normal alcoholics may have been confounded by the inclusion of patients with neurologically asymptomatic Wernicke-Korsakoff neuropathology. Postmortem and in vivo studies have shown that alcoholics, irrespective of neurological diagnosis, have widespread pathology involving many

Deep brain stimulation or best medical treatment for Parkinson's disease patients: 36-month longitudinal neuropsychological and motor assessment - a prospective case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (DBS STN) is a very effective surgical method of treating motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. The long-term cognitive outcome after the surgery is still discussed. This study compared the impact of DBS STN to best medical treatment (BMT) in patients with PD on cognitive function and mood over a 36-month observation period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included PD patients divided into two groups: the BMT group (n = 17), receiving pharmacotherapy alone throughout the entire 36-month observation period, and t

Human entorhinal cortex electrical stimulation evoked short-latency potentials in the broad neocortical regions: Evidence from cortico-cortical evoked potential recordings.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed at clarifying the clinical significance of the responses evoked by human entorhinal cortex (EC) electrical stimulation by means of cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs). METHODS: We enrolled nine patients with medically intractable medial temporal lobe epilepsy who underwent invasive presurgical evaluations with subdural or depth electrodes. Single-pulse electrical stimulation was delivered to the EC and fusiform gyrus (FG), and their evoked potentials were compared. The correlation between the evoked potentials and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) score was anal

Effects of Cumulative Herpesviridae and Toxoplasma gondii Infections on Cognitive Function in Healthy, Bipolar, and Schizophrenia Subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are associated with cognitive impairment leading to social disruption. While previous studies have focused on the effect of individual infectious exposure, namely, Herpesviridae viruses or Toxoplasma gondii (T gondii), on cognitive functioning, the objective of the present study was to examine the effect of multiple infections on cognitive functioning in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and in healthy controls. METHODS: Seropositivity to herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Evaluation of memory endophenotypes for association with CLU, CR1, and PICALM variants in black and white subjects.

BACKGROUND: Genetic variants at the CLU, CR1, and PICALM loci associate with risk for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) in genomewide association studies. In this study, our aim was to determine whether the LOAD risk variants at these three loci influence memory endophenotypes in black and white subjects. METHODS: We pursued an association study between single nucleotide polymorphism genotypes at the CLU, CR1, and PICALM loci and memory endophenotypes. We assessed black subjects (AA series: 44 with LOAD and 224 control subjects) recruited at Mayo Clinic Florida and whites recruited at May

Domain-Specific Cognitive Vulnerabilities in ADHD: The Impact of Comorbid Specific Learning Disorder on WISC-IV Profiles.

AIM: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with heterogeneous cognitive profiles, yet the extent to which comorbid Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) contributes to domain-specific cognitive variability remains unclear. This study aimed to examine Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) index-level cognitive profiles in children with ADHD and to evaluate the independent impact of comorbid SLD using regression-based and discriminative analyses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 105 children aged 6-16 years diagnosed with AD

Cognitive impairment in superficial siderosis of the central nervous system: a case report.

Superficial siderosis is a rare disease characterized by cerebellar ataxia and sensorineural deafness. So far, there are only few reports on cognitive dysfunctions associated with superficial siderosis. Using a comprehensive psychometric test battery, we describe the cognitive impairments in a 65-year-old woman fulfilling the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging criteria of superficial siderosis. The neuropsychological findings included deterioration of primary and episodic memory, behavioral and linguistic changes characterized by social disinhibition, and decreased verbal fluency. These f

Does a visual-orthographic deficit contribute to reading disability?

In this study, visual-orthographic skills were defined as the ability to recognize whether letters and numerals are correctly oriented. Aims were to investigate whether visual-orthographic skills would contribute independent variance to reading, and whether children with a visual-orthographic deficit would be more impaired readers than similar children without this deficit. Participants were 207 children, aged 8 to 10 years, who attended school in a small suburban community. Because of the evidence that phonological awareness and naming speed are strongly related to reading, visual-orthographi

Memory matters: developmental differences in predictors of diabetes care behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Longitudinal research shows that pediatric type 1 diabetes can result in verbal memory difficulties, yet the role of memory in the daily management of this or any other chronic illness has not been evaluated. METHODS: Verbal memory measures from two well-standardized tests were administered to 224 youths with type 1 diabetes, aged 9 to 17. Twenty-four-hour recall interviews conducted separately with mothers and their children assessed diabetes care behaviors. RESULTS: Rote verbal memory predicted blood glucose testing frequency for adolescents but not for preadolescents; and when

A subgroup analysis of working memory in children with reading disabilities: domain-general or domain-specific deficiency?

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether changes in working memory (WM) of children with reading disabilities (RD) were related to a domain-specific or a domain-general system. Based on Daneman and Carpenter's (1980) Sentence Listening Span task, children were subgrouped into a group of high executive processing (high listening span) children without RD, a group of low executive processing (low listening span) children with RD, and a group of children with and without RD matched on executive processing (moderate listening span). Subgroups were compared on phonological, visual-spati

Event-related potentials reveal visual episodic memory deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients usually suffer from impaired episodic memory (EM), but its underlying electrophysiologic mechanism and impacted cognitive performance are unclear. We aim to investigate the association between episodic memory reserve and physiological measures of memory workload in TLE patients using Event-related potentials (ERP). METHODS: A change detection task with image stimuli assesses visual episodic memory. During the memory encoding and decoding phases, the ERP signals were analyzed from twenty-nine TLE patients (twelve with left TLE patients, seventee
