Climate Change and Pregnancy: Risks, Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience.

IMPORTANCE: Climate change is affecting the earth, resulting in more extreme temperatures and weather, rising sea levels, more frequent natural disasters, and displacement of populations of plants and animals, including people and insects. These changes affect food and housing security, vector-borne illnesses, and access to clean air and water, all of which influence human health. EVIDENCE AND RESULTS: There are a number of adverse health outcomes linked to heat, air pollution from wildfires, stress from natural disasters, and other elements of climate change. Pregnant people are especially v…

Ferroptosis in smoke inhalation injury: from mechanisms to potential therapeutic targets.

Smoke inhalation injury (SII) is a prevalent yet underrecognized cause of acute respiratory failure and longer-term airway-alveolar remodeling after fires, wildfires, and industrial accidents. Beyond inflammation and generic oxidative stress, accumulating evidence supports ferroptosis as a mechanistically distinct, self-amplifying axis that can sustain epithelial/endothelial damage, barrier breakdown, and maladaptive repair. Ferroptosis is driven by iron-dependent phospholipid peroxidation and collapse of membrane redox homeostasis, and in SII is promoted by iron dyshomeostasis including heme/…

Field experiments on the effects of fire on parasite transmission to amphibian hosts.

The emergence of infectious diseases is often associated with changes to host-pathogen ecology, and wildfires are known to profoundly modify the ecology of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, few studies have employed manipulative experiments to quantify the effects of fire on infections across parasite species. In a mark-recapture study, prescribed burns did not significantly affect the densities of Cuban tree frog (CTF; Osteopilus septentrionalis) definitive hosts. However, prescribed burn field experiments and a before-after-control-burn mesocosm study revealed that fire de…

Climate Change and Diabetes Mellitus - Emerging Global Public Health Crisis: Observational Analysis.

Climate change is the most pressing challenge of the 21st century. It's immediate impacts on the environment are extreme weather conditions … out 250,000 additional deaths per annum. The rapid rise in temperatures, frequencies of heat waves, wildfires, storms, and other weather extremes conditions could affect human health in many ways. The one-degree Celsius rise in outdoor temperature causes over 100,000 new cases of diabetes mellitus per annum. Climate change compromised body metabolism, vasod …

Benzene Diffusion and Partitioning in Contaminated Drinking Water Pipes under Stagnant Conditions.

Benzene contamination in drinking water systems affected by wildfires is a problem of emerging concern. Polyethylene pipes used in service lines and premise plumbing are vulnerable to permeation by benzene and can potentially cause challenges in sampling and remediation of contaminated systems. However, the kinetics and equilibria of the uptake of benzene by and release of benzene from pipes of differing polyethylene types and manufacturers are not well studied, leading to additional uncertainty when interpreting sampling data and selecting remediation options. This work addresses this data ga…

Developing a research-specific emergency management programme for municipal resilience following the 2013 flood in southern Alberta.

Calgary was significantly impacted by the southern Alberta floods in 2013. Prior to the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires (also in Alberta), these floods were the costliest disaster in Canadian history. In the aftermath, the Conference Board of Canada's independent review of the overall performance of Calgary's Recovery Operations Centre (ROC) recommended the need to: (1) include community actors and external stakeholders; and (2) develop pre-event situational awareness for those citizens who lack the ability to request assistance through regular channels. In response to these findings and a seemin…

Ground-level air pollution changes during a boreal wildland mega-fire.

The 2011 Richardson wildland mega-fire in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northern Alberta, Canada had large effects on air quality. At a receptor site in the center of the AOSR ambient PM2.5, O3, NO, NO2, SO2, NH3, HONO, HNO3, NH4+ and NO3- were measured during the April-August 2011 period. Concentrations of NH3, HNO3, NO2, SO2 and O3 were also monitored across the AOSR with passive samplers, providing monthly summer and bi-monthly winter average values in 2010, 2011 and 2012. During the fire, hourly PM2.5 concentrations >450μgm-3 were measured at the AMS 1 receptor site. The 24-h Na

[The Plague of 1478 in Brescia from Giacomo Melga's diary].

A severe epidemic of bubonic plague devastated Brescia in 1478. We became aware of the tragic events via a manuscript preserved in the town's Queriniana Library after it had been rediscovered and brought to light by the well-known local historian, Paolo Guerrini, who also edited the complete transcription. An important symptom of the disease, as reported from the beginning of a notary's dramatic description, was a splitting headache, described by people as mal del zuchot or del mazzucco. The disease appeared slowly at the beginning of March and spread like wildfire in July; the epidemic contin

Aquatic ecological risks due to cyanide releases from biomass burning.

Aquatic toxicity due to the creation and mobilization of chemical constituents by fire has been little studied, despite reports of post-fire fish kills attributed to unspecified pyrogenic toxicants. We examined releases of cyanides from biomass burning and their effect on surface runoff water. In laboratory test burns, available cyanide concentrations in leachate from residual ash were much higher than in leachate from partially burned and unburned fuel and were similar to or higher than the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC50) for rainbow trout (45 microg/l). Free cyanide concentrations in

[Global threats from emerging viral diseases].

Emerging viral diseases are nothing new. Smallpox probably reached Europe from Asia in the 5th century, and yellow fever emerged in the Americas during the 16th century as a consequence of the African slave trade. Dengue fever arose simultaneously in South-East Asia, Africa, and North America during the 18th century. In 1918-1919 the so-called Spanish flu spread like wildfire through all five continents, killing between 25 and 40 million people. The second half of the 20th century saw the emergence of HIV/AIDS (1981), among other viral diseases. Even more worrying is the fact that emerging and

PM2.5 anomaly detection for exceptional event demonstrations: A Texas case study.

The shifting frontiers of air pollution emission sources contribute to stagnation or reversal of air quality gains across the United States (US). The frequency and possible duration of Exceptional Events - driven primarily by wildfires and dust storms - have significantly increased in the US over the past decade. Combined with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rule strengthening primary annual National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM2.5 by 25%, communities will need to reevaluate domestic and international sources of PM2.5.This study applies the Isolation Forest m…

Attitudes of fire service personnel toward respiratory protection in wildland firefighting.

Wildland and wildland-urban interface (W/WUI) fires are increasing in frequency and intensity, increasing concerns about firefighters' exposure to hazardous smoke and the need for respiratory protection. This qualitative study explored the perspectives of California fire service personnel on the use of respiratory protective devices (RPDs), particularly powered air-purifying respirators, and a potential Cal/OSHA regulation mandating their use in W/WUI firefighting. Participants were experienced in W/WUI firefighting and had some role in their fire department related to respiratory protection o

Global emergence of unprecedented lifetime exposure to climate extremes.

Climate extremes are escalating under anthropogenic climate change1. Yet, how this translates into unprecedented cumulative extreme event exposure in a person's lifetime remains unclear. Here we use climate models, impact models and demographic data to project the number of people experiencing cumulative lifetime exposure to climate extremes above the 99.99th percentile of exposure expected in a pre-industrial climate. We project that the birth cohort fraction facing this unprecedented lifetime exposure to heatwaves, crop failures, river floods, droughts, wildfires and tropical cyclones will a…

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals on Black Carbon Induce Rapid Degradation of Phenolic Acids.

Wildfires and postharvest crop residue burning release substantial amounts of black carbon (BC) into the atmosphere annually, posing significant environmental and public health challenges. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) are abundant on BC surfaces, yet their reactivity and structural characteristics remain poorly understood. This study demonstrates that EPFRs on BC surfaces drive the rapid decay of coexisting phenolic acids, leading to the formation of more toxic products. Novel integrated approaches, including temperature-programmed desorption mass spectrometry and electroch…
