Neuroanatomical and behavioral asymmetry in an adult compensated dyslexic.

Individual differences in cortical anatomy are readily observable, but their functional significance for behaviors such as reading is not well understood. Here, we report a case of an apparent compensated dyslexic who had attained high achievement in visuospatial mathematics. Data from a detailed background interview, psychometric testing, divided visual field tasks measuring basic word recognition (word naming, nonword naming, and lexical decision), and more controlled word retrieval (verb, category, and rhyme generation), and measurements of his atypical brain structure are described. The fi

The spacing words and pseudowords reading test: normative data to measure peripheral acquired dyslexia in the Italian adult population.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies in right-brain-damaged patients with an acquired reading disorder have shown that omission and substitution errors in reading single words and pseudowords may result from two different mechanisms: the association of spatial neglect with altered eye movements (neglect dyslexia), which produces left-sided omissions, or an enhancement of a crowding phenomenon (crowding dyslexia), responsible for less lateralized substitutions. This study aims to provide normative data for the Spacing Words and Pseudowords (SWAP) reading test for the Italian population, a novel tool se

Further evaluation of narrative description as a measure of cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The narrative description (ND) test objectively measures the ability to understand and describe visual scenes. As subtle differences in speech occur early in cognitive decline, we analyzed linguistic features for their utility in detecting cognitive impairment and predicting downstream decline. METHOD: Participants (n = 52) with normal cognition to mild dementia performed the ND test (watched twenty 30-s video clips and described the visual content). Cognitive function was followed for up to 5 years. We computed simple linguistic features such as content efficiency, speech rate, an

Sources of successful participant engagement in a public health research study: A focus on a Latino community.

BACKGROUND: Latino populations remain vastly underrepresented in clinical and translational research. This study aims to characterize the most common sources of successful participant engagement within our sample. METHODS: Between February 2022 and March 2023, research staff systematically recorded how participants learned about an ongoing study (which we term source of successful participant engagement) designed to co-create and implement a COVID-19 testing program in a U.S./Mexico border community. Demographic characteristics were correlated with each source of participant engagement at the

Determination of language dominance with near-infrared spectroscopy: comparison with the intracarotid amobarbital procedure.

PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in identifying the hemisphere associated with language by measuring changes in bilateral lateral inferior frontal blood flow during a word generation task in epilepsy surgery patients and healthy volunteers. METHODS: Sixteen patients who underwent the intracarotid amobarbital procedure (IAP) and eight healthy right-handed/right-footed individuals were tested with NIRS during a word generation paradigm. RESULTS: Increases in lateral inferior frontal total hemoglobin concentrations agreed with the IAP in 11 of 16 patients,

Factors associated with cognitive decline in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus during a 6-year observation.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a risk for cognitive decline in older adults. The current study was carried out to determine the factors associated with cognitive decline. METHODS: The older T2DM patients (aged ≥65 years, mean age 79.2 ± 5.1 years) were observed for 6 years, and the mean values in clinical indicators of participants with and without cognitive decline over a 6-year period were compared. Then, multiple logistic analysis was carried out to determine the factors associated with cognitive decline. Separate analyses were also carried out for each of five cognitive assessme

Ingressive speech errors: a service evaluation of speech-sound therapy in a child aged 4;6.

BACKGROUND: A pattern of ingressive substitutions for word-final sibilants can be identified in a small number of cases in child speech disorder, with growing evidence suggesting it is a phonological difficulty, despite the unusual surface form. Phonological difficulty implies a problem with the cognitive process of organizing speech into sound contrasts. AIMS: To evaluate phonological therapy approaches in the remediation of non-pulmonic speech errors. Thus, adding to evidence concerning the nature of ingressive substitutions and their remediation whilst highlighting their occurrence within

Phonological and semantic factors in the object-naming errors of skilled and less-skilled readers.

Children who read poorly have difficulty naming objects, and their errors usually bear a semantic or a phonetic resemblance to the correct words. Excessive semantic and phonetic naming errors could both be due to underlying phonological deficiencies in poor readers. When children cannot name an object because its name is not represented well in long-term memory or cannot be processed well, semantic information as well as partially available phonological information may be used in selecting an alternative response. This hypothesis was tested by looking for the joint influence of semantics and p

Age-Related Hearing Loss, Cognitive Decline, and Social Interaction: Testing a Framework.

PURPOSE: Aging increases risk for hearing loss, cognitive decline, and social isolation; however, the nature of their interconnection remains unclear. This study examined the interplay between age-related hearing loss, cognitive decline, and social isolation in adults by testing the ability to understand speech in background noise, a challenge frequently reported by many older adults. METHOD: We analyzed data collected from 128 adults (20-79 years of age, Mage = 51 years) recruited as part of the Aging Brain Cohort at the University of South Carolina repository. The participants underwent tes

Prior Emotional Context Modulates Early Event-Related Potentials to Neutral Retrieval Cues.

Memory retrieval is thought to involve the reactivation of encoding processes. Previous fMRI work has indicated that reactivation processes are modulated by the residual effects of the prior emotional encoding context; different spatial patterns emerge during retrieval of memories previously associated with negative compared with positive or neutral context. Other research suggests that event-related potential (ERP) indicators of memory retrieval processes, like the left parietal old/new effect, can also be modulated by emotional context, but the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of t

Baseline and reactivity measures of blood pressure and negative affect in borderline hypertension.

Measures of blood pressure (BP) and negative affect were taken prior to, immediately following, and ten minutes after a cognitive stressor in groups of normotensive (group N; n = 15) and borderline hypertensive (group B; n = 15) young adults. Two testing sessions, one week apart, involved performance of a simple, congruent color-word ("easy") and a cognitive stress-inducing, incongruent color-word ("difficult") version of the Stroop test. In both sessions, group B showed significantly higher baseline systolic and diastolic BP, higher systolic responses to the difficult Stroop task, and higher

The Role of the Supplementary Motor Region in Overt Reading: Evidence for Differential Processing in SMA-Proper and Pre-SMA as a Function of Task Demands.

A differentiation in function between the pre-SMA (i.e., cognitive load) and the SMA-proper (i.e., motor execution) has been described (Zhang et al., Cereb Cortex 22:99-111, 2012). These differential SMA functions may be influential in overt reading tasks. The present study examined the relationships between various segments of the SMA and overt reading through the modulation of task demands in an effort to explore the complexity of the print-to-speech network. Skilled reading adults (N = 15) took part in five overt reading tasks: pure regular word reading, pure exception word reading, mixed r

Reversible Verbal Memory Integration Deficits in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.

When presented with novel but semantically related elements after learning verbal material, healthy participants tend to endorse these items as previously learned. This reflects the normal integration and association of novel verbal information into long-term memory. How obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) negatively impacts verbal memory performance, and whether deficits are reversible following positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment, remain elusive. We investigated immediate and delayed OSA- and PAP treatment-related effects on verbal memory integration, using a false memory paradigm. Twenty-th

Relations between suggestibility, working memory and response inhibition in middle childhood.

Individual difference in children's interrogative suggestibility should be theoretically associated with working memory and response inhibition skills. Yet, previous studies have reached mixed conclusions regarding the role of cognitive factors. In the present research, we re-examined this question in a sample of 203 children attending primary or middle school. They were administered the Gudjonsson Suggestibility Scale, a verbal span task (to measure the capacity of the phonological loop), and two inhibitory tasks (the Stroop Color and Word Test and the Global-Local Task). In line with our pre
