Well-Being and Safety Among Inpatient Psychiatric Staff: The Impact of Conflict, Assault, and Stress Reactivity.

Psychiatric staff are faced with multiple forms of hostility, aggression, and assault at work, collectively referred to as workplace violence, which typically is activated by patients but can also come from coworkers and supervisors. Whether workplace violence adversely affects staff well-being may be related not only to its presence, but also to an individual's stress reactivity. At a large public psychiatric hospital, an online survey was completed by 323 clinical care staff, of whom 69.5 % had experienced physical assault in the previous 12 months. Staff well-being (depression, anger, and p…

"We Have Come to Work as Maids, not Sex Slaves": young women domestic workers and sexual violence in Uganda.

INTRODUCTION: Young women with limited education who migrate from rural to urban areas in Uganda for household domestic work face multiple, intersecting vulnerabilities that increase their risk of sexual violence and other forms of exploitation. These vulnerabilities are often shaped by economic dependence, limited social support, and unequal power dynamics within households. This study explored their lived experiences, perceptions, barriers, and facilitators to accessing support following sexual violence. METHODS: Within a community-based cross-sectional study, we conducted a qualitative stu

Violence Is a Public Health and Healthcare Issue.

Violence is a global issue that destroys the quality of life in communities and societies. Violence includes intentional and unintentional injury found in individuals who seek health care after acts of family violence, intimate partner violence, child abuse, elder abuse, sexual assault, trafficking, youth-on-youth violence, gang warfare, terror, war, disaster, and violence in schools, workplaces and prisons. The nature of violence is evolving. Death as a result of crime victimization now exceeds that of armed conflict. It is the position of the International Association of Forensic Nurses that

Patient-related violence against emergency department nurses.

In a finding that reflects international experiences, nurses in Australia have been identified as the occupation at most risk of patient-related violence in the health-care sector. A search of the literature was undertaken to explore this concept, with a focus on the emergency department and triage nurses. Significant findings included the fact that nurses are subjected to verbal and physical abuse so frequently that, in many instances, it has become an accepted part of the job. This attitude, combined with the chronic under-reporting of violent incidents, perpetuates the normalization of viol

Taking Prior Sick Leave Patterns Into Account When Estimating Health Consequences of Violence on the Job.

BACKGROUND: Violence on the job has been shown to harm both physical and psychosocial health, but the results presented in existing studies might be biased because they have not considered prior indicators of such health. METHODS: Physical violence and threats were pooled into a measure of workplace violence for 77,388 randomly sampled respondents from the working population in Denmark in 2012, 2014, and 2016. Longitudinal analyses of these survey data merged with administrative records on sick leave (exceeding 30 days, implying that the consequences of the violence were more serious) were pe…
