[Transient zinc deficiency in preterm infants].

Zinc is an essential element and necessary for various cellular functions. Preterm infants may have a negative zinc balance and are therefore especially susceptible for symptomatic zinc deficiency. We report on a preterm child with distinct clinical manifestations of zinc deficiency confirmed by histology and laboratory analysis who quickly healed with oral zinc therapy.

Intestinal and placental zinc transport pathways.

Mammalian members of the cation diffusion facilitator (CDF) and zrt-, irt-like protein (ZIP) families of Zn transporters, initially identified in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Arabidopsis thalania spp., have been cloned during the last 8 years and have been classified as families SLC30 and SLC39 respectively. The cloning of human Zn transporters ZnT-like transporter 1 (hZTL1)/ZnT5 (SLC30A5) and hZIP4 (SLC39A4) were major advances in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of dietary Zn absorption. Both transporters are localised at the enterocyte apical membrane and are, therefore, potent

Pancreatitis in wild zinc-poisoned waterfowl.

Four waterfowl were collected in the Tri-State Mining District (Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, USA), an area known to be contaminated with lead, cadmium and zinc (Zn). They were part of a larger group of 20 waterfowl collected to determine the exposure of birds to metal contamination at the site. The four waterfowl (three Branta canadensis, one Anas platyrhynchos) had mild to severe degenerative abnormalities of the exocrine pancreas, as well as tissue (pancreas, liver) concentrations of Zn that were considered toxic. The mildest condition was characterized by generalized atrophy of exocrine c…

Interdomain zinc site on human albumin.

Albumin is the major transport protein in blood for Zn(2+), a metal ion required for physiological processes and recruited by various drugs and toxins. However, the Zn(2+)-binding site(s) on albumin is ill-defined. We have analyzed the 18 x-ray crystal structures of human albumin in the PDB and identified a potential five-coordinate Zn site at the interface of domains I and II consisting of N ligands from His-67 and His-247 and O ligands from Asn-99, Asp-249, and H(2)O, which are the same amino acid ligands as those in the zinc enzymes calcineurin, endonucleotidase, and purple acid phosphatase…

[Erythrocyte zinc-protoporphyrin content in pregnancy].

The assessment of iron deficiency represents a major aspect of routine laboratory chemico-clinical analysis, but the results provided by traditional hemato-clinical tests (sideremia, transferrinemia, mean cell volume and red blood cell levels) may not prove conclusive. During pregnancy iron deficiency is common and it would be extremely valuable to obtain a precise method of evaluating anemia. The assay of erythrocytic zincoprotoporphyrin (ZNPP) offers further diagnostic possibilities. This study aimed to evaluate the behaviour of ZNPP and other common laboratory indices in pregnant and non-pr…

Zinc deficiency. A public health problem?

Zinc deficiency occurs in individuals and populations whose diets are low in sources of readily bioavailable zinc such as red meat, and high in unrefined cereals that are rich in phytate and dietary fibers. Dietary zinc deficiency was described nearly three decades ago among the poor of the Middle East. It is now known to occur in children and adolescents from widely diverse areas including Egypt, Iran, Turkey, China, Yugoslavia, Canada, and the United States; and among pregnant women from Iran, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States. Major manifestations include retarded…

Zinc nutrition in fetal alcohol syndrome.

Because alcohol has an adverse effect on zinc homeostasis, this study was designed to study if zinc content of the diet modifies the severity of fetal alcohol syndrome in a mouse model. The effect of varying zinc intake on the progeny of pregnant mice fed a liquid diet containing 15% of the calories as ethanol was studied. Prenatal mortality was higher when the mothers consumed alcohol with inadequate zinc intake. Because of the adverse effect of alcohol on zinc homeostasis and because zinc deficiency has been shown to potentiate alcohol embryopathy, one group was given zinc supplementation to…

Zinc metabolism in alcoholic liver disease.

Alterations in zinc metabolism or zinc deficiency frequently occur in patients with alcoholic liver disease. Potential manifestations of zinc deficiency include skin lesions, hypogonadism, impaired night vision, impaired immune function, anorexia, altered protein metabolism, diarrhea, and depressed mental function. Because of the variety of ways in which zinc deficiency may present in alcoholic liver disease, clinicians must maintain a high index of suspicion for this nutrient deficiency when caring for these patients. Not only may zinc deficiency occur with alcoholic liver disease, but there …

Interrelationships between zinc and immune function.

Zinc deficiency is a common nutritional problem observed both in human and in animal populations that has profound effects on host defense mechanisms. Using the young adult mouse as a model, it has been demonstrated that a moderate period of suboptimal zinc causes thymic atrophy, lymphopenia, and alterations in the proportions of the various subsets of lymphocytes and mononuclear phagocytes. As a result, antibody-mediated responses to both T cell-dependent and T cell independent antigens are significantly reduced. Cytolytic T cell responses, natural killer (NK) cell activity, and delayed-type …

Zinc localization in taste bud membranes.

Zinc was measured by flame aspiration atomic absorption spectrophotometry in homogenates and in enriched fractions and subfractions from bovine taste bud membranes and from surrounding control tissues that contained no taste buds. Zinc was found in significantly higher concentrations in tissues containing taste buds and increased in concentration as biochemical and electron microscopic purity increased. The role of zinc in taste bud membranes could relate to its role in membrane stabilization or to its activity in alkaline phosphatase, a zinc-dependent enzyme whose specific activity increased …

Reduced leucocyte zinc in liver disease.

The zinc content of peripheral blood leucocytes has been measured in normal controls and in three groups of patients with liver disease. A significant reduction in leucocyte zinc, but not erythrocyte zinc, was observed in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, alcoholic cirrhosis, and active chronic hepatitis. It is suggested that the nucleated tissues of some patients with liver disease are therefore zinc deficient, and that leucocyte zinc may prove of value in the assessment of the zinc status of such patients.
