BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections are one of the most important parasitic infections of humans worldwide, considered by some second only to malaria in associated disease burden. Single-dose mass drug administration for soil-transmitted helminths, including hookworms, relies primarily on albendazole, which has variable efficacy. New and better hookworm therapies are urgently needed. Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein Cry5B has potential as a novel anthelmintic and has been extensively studied in the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. Here, we ask whether single-dose Cry5B can provide therapy a…

Trichinellosis is a widespread zoonoses for which no effective drug treatment is available at this time. Though anthelmintics such as mebendazole and albendazole are commonly used to treat human trichinellosis, none of these drugs are fully effective against the encysted or new-born larvae of Trichinella spiralis. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in developing newer anthelminthics from medicinal plants, particularly the ones used in traditional medicines in many parts of the world, due to the increasing spread of anthelminthic resistance and/or decreasing activity against enc…

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) inflict significant economic losses on sheep and goat farming globally due to reduced productivity and the … tubulin (5OV7) protein. Rosmarinic acid showed a similar activity spectrum to the anthelmintic drug albendazole. The discovery of low-cost and low-toxicity anthelmintic compounds is very important.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a chronic zoonotic disease caused by the larvae of the Echinococcus multilocularis (E. multilocularis). The current chemotherapy for AE relies on albendazole and mebendazole, which exhibit only parasitostatic rather than parasiticidal effects. Therefore, there is a need to find new anti-Echinococcosis drugs. Pseudolaric acid B (PAB) has been described to have strong antiparasitic effects. However, the in-depth mechanism by which PAB acts against E. multilocularis remains unclear.
METHODS: To evaluate the effect of a PAB intervention on protoscolec…

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), a parasitic larval cystic stage of a small taeniid-type tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus), causes illness in intermediate hosts and has become a threat to global public health. Currently, chemical compounds recommended by the WHO targeting CE are albendazole and mebendazole, however, none of them shows enhanced efficacy. Novel molecular compounds are urgently required to treat this disease. Our group uncover a drug, termed harmine (HM), that may be capable of treating CE. In this study, we aim to evaluate the anti-parasitic efficacy and the mechanism of DNA damage …

BACKGROUND: Control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) in most of the sub-Saharan African countries is based on annual mass drug administration (MDA) using a combination of ivermectin and albendazole. Monitoring the impact of this intervention is crucial for measuring the success of the LF elimination programmes. This study assessed the status of LF infection in Rufiji district, southeastern Tanzania after twelve rounds of MDA.
METHODS: Community members aged between 10 and 79 years were examined for Wuchereria bancrofti circulating filarial antigens (CFA) using immunochromatographic test cards (IC…

Intestinal nematode infections caused by soil-transmitted helminths (STH), such as the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides, the whipworm Trichuris trichiura, and the hookworms Ancylostoma duodenale, and Necator americanus, infect more than 1 billion people throughout the world. School-aged children tend to harbor the greatest numbers of intestinal worms, and as a result, experience more adverse health consequences, such as poor growth, anemia, and cognitive decline. Clinicians should maintain a high degree of suspicion in endemic areas when patients present with surgical abdomens, particularly chil

AIM: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with hydatid cyst (HC) of the liver who were laparoscopically operated at our clinic and to define a new technique and technical details to present our experience in the field of laparoscopic treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts.
METHODS: Between January 2014 and October 2016, 18 patients with hydatid disease of the liver were considered for laparoscopic surgery in Dr. Lutfi Kirdar Education and Research Hospital, Department of General Surgery. All patients were evaluated based on history, physical exa

After a baseline survey in 2003 which showed an overall parasitological prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths of 69.7% in school children (prevalence of ascariasis 48.5%, prevalence of trichuriasis 57.5% and prevalence of hookworm infection 6.5), a national deworming programme was established. After 7 years of implementation, it had resulted in a significant reduction of STH prevalence (prevalence of any STH 21%, prevalence of ascariasis 5.8%, prevalence of trichuriasis 18.6% and prevalence of hookworm infection 0.3%) as well as a reduction of the infections of moderate-heavy intensity from

Endemic parasitic infections in the United States are more frequent than is commonly perceived. Intestinal parasitic infection with Cryptosporidium, Dientamoeba, and Giardia occurs most often in children in northern states during the summer months. Zoonotic Toxocara and Toxoplasma parasitic infections are more frequent in southern states, in African Americans, and in populations with lower socioeconomic status. Approximately 300, 000 people in the United States have Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Local, vector-borne transmission of T cruzi and Leishmania infections has been documented in souther

BACKGROUND: Anemia is one of the most common and most serious health disorders worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that about 40% of the total world's population (more than 2 billion individuals) suffer from anemia. In developing countries, the prevalence rate of anemia is about 20% in school-aged children. More than 10 million African children are thought to be anemic (Hb < 11 g/dl). Also, in Africa, it is estimated that more than half of all children over 5 years and pregnant women are anemic. Community-based estimates of anemia prevalence in settings where malaria is en

Orbital cysticercosis is secondary to an infestation by cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of Taenia solium.Orbital cysticercosis may present with a wide spectrum of clinical findings and result in significant ocular morbidity. Although traditionally thought to be only prevalent in endemic regions with poor sanitation, immigration requires even ophthalmologists practicing in industrialised counties to be aware of this masquerading condition's presentation and treatment. We report the clinical manifestation of a case of orbital cysticersosis that presented with recurrent orbital inflammatio

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.
OBJECTIVES: To revise the treatment of spinal hydatidosis.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: About 50% of cases of bone hydatidosis are spinal.
METHODS: Twenty patients with spinal hydatidosis were treated. There were 13 men and 7 women, with a mean age of 53.1 years. The median follow-up was 4.8 years. The infected area was the cervical spine in 1 patient, the dorsal spine in 7, the lumbar spine in 7, and the sacrum in 5. Curettage and resection of the infected bone were performed. The spine was exposed posteriorly in all but 2 patients. An additional posterior

Lymph node enlargement due to cysticercus infestation has not been reported in human subjects. A 7-y-old girl presented with seizures and a right submandibular lymph node enlargement. Investigations showed inflammatory granulomas in the brain. Fine needle aspiration cytology from submandibular lymph node and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of serum and cerebrospinal fluid showed the presence of cysticercosis infestation. The case underlines the potential of fine needle aspiration cytology for establishing diagnosis in patients having enlarged lymph nodes.
