Exploring Spatial and Temporal Variations in Stem-Mediated Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Different Species of Mangroves.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), from mangroves can challenge their carbon sequestration capacity. This study measured GHG emissions from the tree stems of four mangrove species (Avicennia marina, Kandelia obovata, Lumnitzera racemosa, and Rhizophora stylosa) along the western coast of Taiwan. All studied species emitted CO2, CH4, and N2O at the stem-atmosphere interface, with A. marina exhibiting the highest GHG fluxes. Notably, stem N2O emissions from A. marina significantly contributed (1.2 to 100.1%) to total ecosystem fluxes, whereas stem

Lightweight Multimodal Fusion for Urban Tree Health and Ecosystem Services.

Rapid urban expansion has heightened the demand for accurate, scalable, and real-time methods to assess tree health and the provision of ecosystem services. Urban trees are the major contributors to air-quality improvement and climate change mitigation; however, their monitoring is mostly constrained to inherently subjective and inefficient manual inspections. In order to break this barrier, we put forward a lightweight multimodal deep-learning framework that fuses RGB imagery with environmental and biometric sensor data for a combined evaluation of tree-health condition as well as the estimat

Environmental Determinants of Stream Nitrate Concentrations During Baseflow Conditions in Undisturbed Mountain Streams of Southern Parts of Kyushu, Japan.

This study investigated the environmental determinants of nitrate (NO3 -) concentrations from undisturbed mountain streams in the southern part of Kyushu Main Island, Japan. Four hundred twenty-seven water samples were collected between April 2021 and December 2022 under the baseflow condition. Random Forest (RF) regression model was used to identify the important environmental factors affecting stream NO3 - concentrations. The RF result revealed that annual precipitation is the most significant determinant, negatively correlation with NO3 - concentrations. This suggests that higher precipitat

Plant growth promotion and pathogen protection by the desert endophyte Pseudomonas grandensis R4-79.

Desert ecosystems have limited resources and harsh climatic conditions and cannot support cropping in most farming models. Recently, microbial applications have emerged as promising strategies to enhance plant survival and adaptation in such extreme environments. However, the beneficial microbes and our understanding of their functional roles and adaptation mechanisms in desert ecosystems remain underexplored. This study reports the isolation and characterization of the Pseudomonas sp. R4-79 strain from the arid environment of Wadi Rum, Jordan, associated with the desert plant Ifloga spicata.

Acclimation to High Vapor Pressure Deficit in Warmer Air Can Reduce Tree Vulnerability to Drought-Induced Mortality.

Climate change imposes new constraints on tree survival, emphasising two key parameters: the vapour pressure deficit (VPD) and air temperature. Yet, no study has experimentally evaluated drought-induced tree mortality risk following acclimation to elevated temperatures with low or high VPD. Three tree species of contrasting temperature and drought tolerances (Prunus mahaleb, Quercus robur, and Populus nigra) underwent a growing season of acclimation to elevated temperature and/or VPD, and a lethal drought the following year until stem hydraulic failure was confirmed through micro-CT. Our mecha

Local extinction of a parasite of Magellanic penguins? The effect of a warming hotspot on a 'cold' trematode.

It is often postulated that natural systems are expected to suffer an increasing risk of infectious disease outbreaks as climate change accelerates. In the northern Argentine Sea, the rise of ocean temperature has produced a tropicalization of demersal megafauna since 2013. This rapidly warming hotspot provides an excellent model to test whether fish parasites have increased, declined, or remained stable in the region. Cardiocephaloides physalis a parasite of penguins Spheniscus magellanicus as adult and suspected to parasitize anchovies Engraulis anchoita as larvae is here used to compare the

Circulation of Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens Species in Mosquitoes in the Southeastern Part of Romania, Under the Influence of Climate Change.

Dirofilariosis, a parasitic disease caused by nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria, primarily affects dogs but can also infect other carnivores and, more rarely, humans. In Europe, the most commonly involved species are D. immitis and D. repens, transmitted through the bites of mosquito vectors. This study, conducted in Tulcea County between April and October 2024, aimed to determine the prevalence of D. immitis and D. repens in mosquitoes. A total of 1507 mosquitoes were collected and grouped into 76 pools, and subsequently molecular analysis was carried out using qPCR. The estimated infection

Functional Roles and Host Interactions of Orthoflavivirus Non-Structural Proteins During Replication.

Orthoflavivirus, a genus encompassing arthropod-borne, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses in the Flaviviridae family, represents clinically relevant viruses that pose significant threats to human and animal health worldwide. With warming climates and persistent urbanization, arthropod vectors and the viruses they transmit continue to widen their geographic distribution, expanding endemic zones. Flaviviruses such as dengue virus, Zika virus, West Nile virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus cause debilitating and fatal infections globally. In 2024, the World Health Organization and th

Prescriptions (Rx) for Prevention: Clinical Tools for Integrating Environmental Health into Pediatric Clinical Care.

The integration of environmental health (EH) into routine clinical care for children is in its early stages. The vision of pediatric EH is that all clinicians caring for children are aware of and able to help connect families to needed resources to reduce harmful environmental exposures and increase health-enhancing ones. Environmental exposures include air pollution, substandard housing, lead, mercury, pesticides, consumer products chemicals, drinking water contaminants, industrial facility emissions and, increasingly, climate change-related extreme weather and heat events. An identified need

Pathogenic potential of an environmental Aspergillus fumigatus strain recovered from soil of Pygoscelis papua (Gentoo penguins) colony in Antarctica.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a common opportunistic pathogen in different animals, including birds such as penguins. For the first time, a fungal strain identified as A. fumigatus was isolated from soil in the nests of gentoo penguins, Pygoscelis papua, on Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands (maritime Antarctica). This isolate (A. fumigatus UFMGCB 11829) displayed a series of potentially pathogenic characteristics in vitro. We evaluated its detailed molecular taxonomy and submitted the A. fumigatus UFMGCB 11829 Antarctic strain to in vivo pathogenic modelling. The isolate was confirmed to re

The Socio-Environmental Determinants of Childhood Malnutrition: A Spatial and Hierarchical Analysis.

Despite a remarkable reduction in global poverty and famines, substantial childhood malnutrition continues to persist. In 2017, over 50 million and 150 million young children suffered from acute malnutrition (wasting) and chronic malnutrition (stunting), respectively. Yet, the measurable impact of determinants is obscure. We evaluate proposed socio-environmental related determinants of stunting and wasting across Kenya and Nigeria and quantify their effectiveness. We combine health and demographic data from Kenya and Nigeria Demographic Health Surveys (2003, 2008-2009, 2013, 2014) with spatial

An overview on viral interference during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Respiratory viruses represent the most frequent cause of mortality, morbidity and high healthcare costs for emergency visits and hospitalization in the pediatric age. Respiratory viruses can circulate simultaneously and can potentially infect the same host, determining different types of interactions, the so-called viral interference. The role of viral interference has assumed great importance since December 2019, when the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) came on the scene. The aim of this narrative review is to present our perspective regarding research in respirat

Industrial-era decline in Arctic methanesulfonic acid is offset by increased biogenic sulfate aerosol.

Marine phytoplankton are primary producers in ocean ecosystems and emit dimethyl sulfide (DMS) into the atmosphere. DMS emissions are the largest biological source of atmospheric sulfur and are one of the largest uncertainties in global climate modeling. DMS is oxidized to methanesulfonic acid (MSA), sulfur dioxide, and hydroperoxymethyl thioformate, all of which can be oxidized to sulfate. Ice core records of MSA are used to investigate past DMS emissions but rely on the implicit assumption that the relative yield of oxidation products from DMS remains constant. However, this assumption is un

Development and Utility of Practical Indicators of Critical Outcomes in Dengue Patients Presenting to Hospital: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Global travel and climate change have drastically increased the number of countries with endemic or epidemic dengue. The largest dengue outbreak in Taiwan, with 43,419 cases and 228 deaths, occurred in 2015. Practical and cost-effective tools for early prediction of clinical outcomes in dengue patients, especially the elderly, are limited. This study identified the clinical profile and prognostic indicators of critical outcomes in dengue patients on the basis of clinical parameters and comorbidities. A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital from 1 July 2015 to

Effects of temperature on incidence of bacillary dysentery in a temperate continental arid climate city in northwest China.

The effect of ambient temperature on health continues to draw more and more attention with the global warming. Bacillary dysentery (BD) is a major global environmental health issue and affected by temperature and other environmental variables. In the current study, we evaluated the effect of temperature on the incidence of BD from January 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2011 in Jiayuguan, a temperate continental arid climate city in the Hexi Corridor of northwest China. A distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was performed to evaluate the lag effect of temperature on BD up to 30 days. Results sh

Ant communities in disturbed subtropical landscapes: is climate more important than stochastic processes?

Functional trait-based approaches have provided advances in the understanding of community assembly rules. Broad generalisations remain, however, limited due to the idiosyncratic nature of taxa and ecosystems, especially in tropical regions. We use fine scale resolution (30 m grid) environmental variables and community surveys from nearly 100 secondary tropical forest sites to study niche-based or neutral assembly mechanisms in ground dwelling ants. This provides a unique opportunity for understanding fine scale drivers of taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity in a region characteri

Structural and thermodynamic insights into the Cren7 mediated DNA organization in Crenarchaeota.

Archaea have histone homologues and chromatin proteins to organize their DNA into a compact form. This allows them to survive in extreme climates. Cren7 is one such chromatin protein conserved in Crenarchaeota. When Cren7 binds to model natural DNA, calf thymus DNA (CTD, 58% AT content) and polynucleotides under adverse solution conditions (high temperature, ionic strength), CD bands at 275-290 nm shift to higher wavelengths indicating structural changes in DNA. It formed a strong complex with CTD and poly(dA-dT)·poly(dA-dT), via a combination of electrostatic and non-electrostatic interaction

Selecting Thresholds of Heat-Warning Systems with Substantial Enhancement of Essential Population Health Outcomes for Facilitating Implementation.

Most heat-health studies identified thresholds just outside human comfort zones, which are often too low to be used in heat-warning systems for reducing climate-related health risks. We refined a generalized additive model for selecting thresholds with substantial health risk enhancement, based on Taiwan population records of 2000-2017, considering lag effects and different spatial scales. Reference-adjusted risk ratio (RaRR) is proposed, defined as the ratio between the relative risk of an essential health outcome for a threshold candidate against that for a reference; the threshold with the

Vertical decoupling of soil nutrients and water under climate warming reduces plant cumulative nutrient uptake, water-use efficiency and productivity.

Warming-induced desiccation of the fertile topsoil layer could lead to decreased nutrient diffusion, mobility, mineralization and uptake by roots. Increased vertical decoupling between nutrients in topsoil and water availability in subsoil/bedrock layers under warming could thereby reduce cumulative nutrient uptake over the growing season. We used a Mediterranean semiarid shrubland as model system to assess the impacts of warming-induced topsoil desiccation on plant water- and nutrient-use patterns. A 6 yr manipulative field experiment examined the effects of warming (2.5°C), rainfall reductio
