Subdural hygroma secondary to rupture of an intracranial arachnoid cyst: description of 2cases and review of the literature.

The appearance of a subdural hygroma after the rupture of an arachnoid cyst wall is extremely rare, with very few cases described in the literature. Most cases are due to a traumatic cause. The therapeutic approach in symptomatic cases is controversial, with a current tendency toward conservative management initially. In those cases that require surgical treatment, multiple therapeutic options are available, with fenestration techniques being recommended as first-line treatment. We describe 2cases treated in our centre and review the literature.

Clinical, CT, and MRI features of acute calcific tendinitis of the longus colli: a case series with novel imaging findings.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and radiologic features of acute calcific tendinitis of the longus colli (ACTLC). METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional study analysed 30 patients diagnosed with ACTLC from January 2013 to December 2022. Two experienced radiologists independently reviewed CT and MR images to confirm the ACTLC diagnosis and document radiologic findings. Clinical data, including symptoms and laboratory results, were also assessed. The study received approval from the institutional ethics committee, with patient consent waived. RESULTS: The cohort had a mean age of 49

New approach to establish a surgical planning in infantile vallecular cyst synchronous with laryngomalacia based on aerodynamic analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A large proportion of infants with vallecular cyst (VC) have coexisting laryngomalacia (LM). Feeding difficulties, regurgitation, occasional cough, and sleep-disordered breathing are the common symptoms in moderate to severe cases. The surgical management of these cases is more challenging and remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to help surgeons select the effective surgical strategies by computer-aided design (CAD) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the upper airway flow characteristics. METHODS: The three dimensional (3D) geometr

Syringomyelia and hydromyelia: Current understanding and neurosurgical management.

Syringomyelia is a rare disorder in which a fluid-filled cyst forms within the spinal cord, resulting in myelopathy. Meanwhile, the abnormal dilatation of the central canal is referred to as hydromyelia or slit-like syrinx. The most prevailing classification is based on anatomical features and pathogeny rather than pathophysiological mechanisms. It is usual to distinguish foraminal syringomyelia related mainly to abnormalities at the craniocervical junction, non-foraminal syringomyelia dealing with any cause of arachnoiditis (infection, inflammation, trauma…) and more rarely syringomyelia asso

Childhood abdominal cystic lymphangioma.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal lymphangioma is a rare benign congenital malformation of the mesenteric and/or retroperitoneal lymphatics. Clinical presentation is variable and may be misleading; therefore, complex imaging studies are necessary in the evaluation of this condition. US and CT have a major role in the correct preoperative diagnosis and provide important information regarding location, size, adjacent organ involvement, and expected complications. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and imaging findings of seven children with proven abdominal cystic lymphangioma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cli

Neurocysticercosis-Associated Meningitis: A Systematic Review.

Neurocysticercosis is a frequent parasitic infection of the central nervous system. While parenchymal forms are well recognized, meningitis due to cysticercus remains underdiagnosed. This systematic review assessed clinical features, diagnostics, treatment, and outcomes of neurocysticercosis-associated meningitis. Following PRISMA guidelines and PROSPERO registration, case reports, series, and cohorts describing meningitis attributed to neurocysticercosis were analyzed. Extracted data included demographics, presentation, imaging, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) findings, diagnostics, therapy, and ou

Gomori Methenamine Silver Stain on Bronchoalveolar Lavage Fluid Is Poorly Sensitive for Diagnosis of Pneumocystis jiroveci Pneumonia in HIV-Negative Immunocompromised Patients and May Lead to Missed or Delayed Diagnoses.

CONTEXT.—: Direct visualization of Pneumocystis jiroveci organisms, using Gomori methenamine silver (GMS) staining in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL), is a historical gold standard that has been widely used for the diagnosis of P jiroveci pneumonia (PJP). However, the stain may be less sensitive in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative immunocompromised patients owing to a lower burden of organisms. OBJECTIVES.—: To assess the sensitivity of the GMS stain on BAL fluid for the diagnosis of PJP in HIV-negative immunocompromised patients as compared to HIV-positive patients. DESIGN.—:

Milk of calcium stones: radiological signs and management outcome.

Milk of calcium (MOC) is a rare type of stone that was first described in 1940 by Ludin and Howald who reported MOC in renal cysts. Milk of calcium is a viscous colloidal suspension of calcium salts. Stasis, obstruction and infection are important predisposing factors. Due to a layering effect, characteristic radiological signs especially in CT can help in diagnosis to avoid unsuccessful shock wave lithotripsy. This is the largest reported case series, in which radiological signs by CT scan to predict renal MOC stones, clinical picture and management outcome are described in detail. Cases with

Mice with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with cysts: a developmental angle.

OBJECTIVE: Megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with cysts (MLC) is a genetic disease characterized by infantile onset white matter edema and delayed onset neurological deterioration. Loss of MLC1 function causes MLC. MLC1 is involved in ion-water homeostasis, but its exact role is unknown. We generated Mlc1-null mice for further studies. METHODS: We investigated which brain cell types express MLC1, compared developmental expression in mice and men, and studied the consequences of loss of MLC1 in Mlc1-null mice. RESULTS: Like humans, mice expressed MLC1 only in astrocytes, especially those fa

Peritumoral Cystic Meningioma With Diagnostic Challenges: Two Case Reports and a Literature Review.

Cystic meningiomas are relatively rare and pose significant diagnostic challenges because their heterogeneous cystic architecture closely mimics gliomas or metastatic lesions. This radiological overlap creates critical diagnostic dilemmas that directly influence surgical strategy and patient counseling. We present two surgically treated cases that illustrate distinct imaging pitfalls and offer practical insights for advanced image-based differentiation. The first patient, a 45-year-old man, presented with behavioral changes and right-sided weakness; Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resona

Adipose tissue torsion with localized lymphangiectasia in a Rio Cauca caecilian Typhlonectes natans.

OBJECTIVE: A female Rio Cauca caecilian Typhlonectes natans (estimated as between 10 and 18 years of age) housed at the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., developed progressive severe coelomic effusion over a 4-week period. The coelomic effusion was diagnosed via radiographs and ultrasound, and a sample of the fluid was obtained for analysis, which revealed a low-protein transudate suggestive of inflammation. As the coelomic effusion progressed, the caecilian became tachypneic, hyporexic, and lethargic. The caecilian was started on antibiotics and a diet trial, but signs

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis accompanying ipsilateral renal agenesis in a young adult: a case report.

A 31-year-old man with left-sided testicular pain lasting a couple of months was referred to our urology department due to a suspected testicular tumor. Physical examination showed a hard, thickened, and small left testis on palpation with a diffuse, inhomogeneous ultrasonographic appearance. After a urologic examination, a left-sided inguinal orchiectomy was performed. The testis, epididymis, and spermatic cord were sent to pathology. Gross examination revealed a cystic cavity filled with brown fluid and the surrounding brownish parenchyma measuring up to 3.5 cm in diameter. Histologic examin

Ultrasound-Guided Transvaginal Aspiration and Sclerotherapy for Uterine Cystic Adenomyosis: Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Uterine cystic adenomyosis is a very rare type of adenomyosis which can be easily misdiagnosed in clinical practice. In the past, cases have been mostly treated with surgical resection of the uterine lesion. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old woman who presented with severe dysmenorrhea for more than 1 year. Physical examination showed that the uterus was enlarged. The transvaginal ultrasound showed a cystic mass of about 5.0 × 3.6 × 3.6 cm in the posterior myometrium, with dense echo spots and no blood flow signal in the cystic part. Magnetic resonance imaging

Lateral flow dipstick antigen assay for human cystic echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected zoonotic disease with a worldwide distribution and is a major public health problem in some areas. Diagnosis of CE is mainly based on clinical symptoms, imaging and serological testing, however, improvement in serodiagnosis is still needed. This study was aimed at detecting circulating Echinococcus antigen in CE patients using a lateral flow dipstick (LFD) assay. Three types of hydatid antigens i.e. hydatid cyst fluid (HCF), native antigen B (nAgB) and recombinant antigen B (rAgB) were prepared and polyclonal rabbit antiserum was raised against each an…
