Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Differentiation of Adult Patients With Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome: Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) continues to rise, with these conditions significantly increasing risks of cardiovascular disease, disability, and mortality. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome differentiation, a cornerstone of TCM practice, guides diagnosis and treatment by identifying patterns of disharmony. However, large-scale studies investigating TCM syndrome patterns in T2DM comorbid with MetS remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aims to characterize TCM syndrome profiles in a population diagnosed wi

Serum Metabolomics Reveals Impaired Fatty Acid Oxidation and Elevated One-Carbon Demand in Cats Fed a Low-Protein Diet Compared with a Low-Fat or Low-Carbohydrate Diet.

BACKGROUND: Feline obesity remains a major metabolic health concern, yet the mechanistic effects of controlled macronutrient substitution on feline metabolism are poorly defined. Cats, as obligate carnivores, have high amino acid oxidation and limited carbohydrate metabolic capabilities that may result in metabolic shifts when dietary protein is substituted for dietary fat or for dietary carbohydrate, as nitrogen-free extract (NFE). OBJECTIVES: The aim of our study was to apply targeted metabolomics to assess fasted metabolic consequences of an isoenergetic macronutrient substitution diet des

Type 2 diabetes prediction without labs: a systems-level neural framework for risk and behavioral network reorganization.

BACKGROUND: Prediction models for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) often rely on biochemical markers such as glycated hemoglobin, fasting glucose, or lipid profiles. While clinically informative, these indicators typically reflect established dysglycemia, limiting their value for early prevention. In contrast, psychosocial stress, sleep disturbance, tobacco use, and dietary quality represent modifiable, non-clinical factors that can be observed long before metabolic abnormalities are clinically detectable. Yet most studies examine these factors in isolation or as additive lifestyle scores, over

Double burden of malnutrition among children under five years in Saudi Arabia: a cross-sectional study of prevalence and determinants.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition among children under 5 years remains a major global public health concern. It encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition, which can coexist within the same population. Estimating the prevalence of malnutrition among preschool children, will contribute to the limited body of city-level nutritional epidemiology studies in Saudi Arabia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition among children under 5 years attending primary health care centers (PHCs) in Taif, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among

Dietary phytochemical index and biomarker profiles are associated with colorectal cancer odds: integrating dietary intake with blood biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major global health challenge. Phytochemical-rich diets may influence colorectal carcinogenesis through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, metabolic, and gut barrier-related mechanisms. However, evidence simultaneously integrating dietary phytochemical intake with other biologically relevant markers remains limited. This study investigated the association between the dietary Phytochemical Index (PI) and CRC odds. METHODS: This hospital-based case-control study included 490 patients with newly diagnosed CRC and 490 cancer-free controls. Dietary intake

Effect of an oat cookie enriched with bean flour biotransformed by Pleurotus ostreatus on nutritional and inflammatory status in male CD-1 mice.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic alterations associated with obesogenic diets are closely linked to chronic low-grade inflammation, highlighting the need for functional foods that can complement conventional dietary strategies. This study evaluated whether an oat cookie enriched with bean flour biotransformed by Pleurotus ostreatus modulated metabolic, tissue, and inflammatory parameters in male CD-1 mice under standard, hypercaloric, and dietary-reversal conditions. METHODS: Forty-five male CD-1 mice were allocated to nine groups (n = 5 per group) according to a metabolic alteration phase and a suppl

[Rapid and simultaneous determination of 11 ergot alkaloids in cereals and their products by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with Captiva EMR-Lipid column purification].

Ergot alkaloids (EAs) are mycotoxins produced by Claviceps and are present in cereals and their products; their residues pose significant threats to human health through food consumption, resulting in ergotism and sickness. Herein, a sensitive and rapid method for the determination of 11 EAs in cereals and their products using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) were developed. Eleven EAs were extracted with 20 mL acetonitrile-200 mg/L ammonium acetate solution (80∶20, v/v) for 15 min using the vortex shock method followed by 15 min of ultrasonication.

The relationship between kidney function and cardiometabolic risk factors, anthropometric indices, and dietary inflammatory index in the Iranian general population: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is estimated to be about 13.4% worldwide. Studies have shown that CKD accounts for up to 2% of the health cost burden. Various factors, such as genetic polymorphisms, metabolic disorders, and unhealthy lifestyles, can contribute to the occurrence of CKD. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between renal function and cardiometabolic risk factors, anthropometric characteristics, and the dietary inflammatory index (DII) in an Iranian population. METHODS: This study was conducted on 2472 male and female empl
