Charging properties of cassiterite (alpha-SnO(2)) surfaces in NaCl and RbCl ionic media.

The acid-base properties of cassiterite (alpha-SnO2) surfaces at 10-50 degrees C were studied using potentiometric titrations of powder susp … orporated in calculations of protonation constants for the reactive surface sites using the revised MUSIC model. The calculations indicated that the terminal SnOH2 group is more acidic than the bridging Sn2OH group, with protonation constants (log KH) of 3.60 and 5.13 at 25 degrees C, respectively. This is contrary to the situation on the isostructural …

Controlled pilot study of the effects of neuromuscular therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The objectives of this study is to examine the effects of neuromuscular therapy (NMT) on motor and nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Thirty-six subjects with PD were randomly assigned to NMT or music relaxation (MR, or active control). Subjects received treatment twice a week for 4 weeks. Testing was conducted at baseline, after final treatment, and 8 days after final treatment. Primary outcome measures were the Motor subscale of the United Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and the Clinical Global Impression scale (CGI-Change). Secondary outcome measures included a PD-specifi…

From Sight to Touch: Haptic Sensory Integration Can Facilitate Multi-Limb Coordination.

Humans possess an innate ability to seamlessly coordinate movement across multiple limbs, whether driving a motor vehicle, playing a musical instrument, or performing other daily tasks. Here, supplemental sensory information, such as haptic feedback, can enhance this coordination in applications ranging from controlling teleoperated robots to prosthetic limbs and collaborative robotics. Yet, a critical gap remains in our understanding of how visual and haptic information are integrated within sensorimotor feedback systems, as well as the extent to which these sensory channels may serve as subs…

The Greenwood function shows close alignment with pitch perceived by cochlear implant patients with long, flexible electrode arrays and fine-structure stimulation.

INTRODUCTION: The natural, tonotopic frequency distribution of the inner ear is typically described by the Greenwood function, which logarithmically projects the audible frequency spectrum onto the intracochlear basilar membrane. Recent developments in cochlear implant (CI) programming aim to improve sound quality and music perception through consideration of the frequency distribution as described by the Greenwood function when assigning frequency bands to the individual contacts of the electrode array. This approach is commonly referred to as anatomy-based fitting (ABF). However, empirical v…

An Effective Treatment for Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in an Inpatient Setting: A 10-Year Retrospective Outcome Analysis.

AIM: Tinnitus and hyperacusis are phenomena with a considerable prevalence in the general population, leading to high levels of suffering. It is a symptom that can present itself comorbidly with a variety of psychiatric and medical illnesses. We established a treatment of tinnitus and hyperacusis, which is based on a multimodal approach including a specific cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) method in an inpatient setting. This approach includes education on tinnitus and hyperacusis, applying coping strategies and techniques of relaxation, directed attention, and music therapy. We aim to evalu…

Revisiting the Neural Basis of Acquired Amusia: Lesion Patterns and Structural Changes Underlying Amusia Recovery.

Although, acquired amusia is a common deficit following stroke, relatively little is still known about its precise neural basis, let alone t … ciated with amusia recovery. Structural MRIs were acquired at acute and 6-month post-stroke stages. Music perception was behaviorally assessed at acute and 3-month post-stroke stages using the Scale and Rhythm subtests of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia (MBEA). Using these scores, the patients were classified as non-amusic, recovered amusic …

Frequency tagging to track the neural processing of contrast in fast, continuous sound sequences.

The human auditory system presents a remarkable ability to detect rapid changes in fast, continuous acoustic sequences, as best illustrated in speech and music. However, the neural processing of rapid auditory contrast remains largely unclear, probably due to the lack of methods to objectively dissociate the response components specifically related to the contrast from the other components in response to the sequence of fast continuous sounds. To overcome this issue, we tested a novel use of the frequency-tagging approach allowing contrast-specific neural responses to be tracked based on their…

The role of conceptual knowledge in understanding synaesthesia: Evaluating contemporary findings from a "hub-and-spokes" perspective.

Synesthesia is a phenomenon in which stimulation in one sensory modality triggers involuntary experiences typically not associated with that stimulation. Inducing stimuli (inducers) and synesthetic experiences (concurrents) may occur within the same modality (e.g., seeing colors while reading achromatic text) or span across different modalities (e.g., tasting flavors while listening to music). Although there has been considerable progress over the last decade in understanding the cognitive and neural mechanisms of synesthesia, the focus of current neurocognitive models of synesthesia does not …

Active theater as a complementary therapy for Parkinson's disease rehabilitation: a pilot study.

Most medical treatments of Parkinson's disease (PD) are aimed at the reduction of motor symptoms. However, even when motor improvements are evident, patients often report a deterioration of their daily lives. Thus, to achieve a global improvement in personal well-being, not only drugs, but also complementary therapies, such as physical exercise, occupational and speech therapy, and active music therapy, have been used. We hypothesized that theater could reduce clinical disability and improve the quality of life of PD patients (primary end points) more efficiently than other complementary thera…

Real-time analysis for intensive care: development and deployment of the artemis analytic system.

The lives of many thousands of children born premature or ill at term around the world have been saved by those who work within neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Modern-day neonatologists, together with nursing staff and other specialists within this domain, enjoy modern technologies for activities such as financial transactions, online purchasing, music, and video on demand. Yet, when they move into their workspace, in many cases, they are supported by nearly the same technology they used 20 years ago. Medical devices provide visual displays of vital signs through physiological streams s…

3D pattern of brain abnormalities in Williams syndrome visualized using tensor-based morphometry.

UNLABELLED: Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder associated with deletion of approximately 20 contiguous genes in chromosome band 7q11.23. Individuals with WS exhibit mild to moderate mental retardation, but are relatively more proficient in specific language and musical abilities. We used tensor-based morphometry (TBM) to visualize the complex pattern of gray/white matter reductions in WS, based on fluid registration of structural brain images. METHODS: 3D T1-weighted brain MRIs of 41 WS subjects (age [mean+/-SD]: 29.2+/-9.2 years; 23F/18M) and 39 age-matched healthy contr…

Limb immobilization for the treatment of focal occupational dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Occupational focal upper-limb dystonia is characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that selectively interfere with the execution of specific motor tasks such as writing or playing a musical instrument. Occupational dystonias have a severe social impact, especially in certain professions. The available medical treatments offer little benefit. METHODS: In eight patients with idiopathic occupational focal dystonia of the upper limb, the dystonic forearm and hand were immobilized with a plastic splint for mean (+/-SD) 4.5 +/- 0.75 weeks. Before splinting (base line) and at var…
