Ultra-low-power System-on-Chip for automated screening of central apnea and hypopnea via chin electromyography.

Central Apnea (CA) and Central Hypopnea (CH) are sleep disorders arising from the brain's inability to signal respiratory muscles, potentially leading to severe complications such as heart failure. This study presents a novel system for automating CA and CH event detection in sleep apnea patients using a feedforward neural network (FdNN) architecture integrated into an ultra-low-power System-on-Chip (SoC) with chin electromyography (EMG) signals. The SoC achieves sub-1-mW power consumption through careful co-optimization of the FdNN architecture, hardware design, and circuit-level consideratio

Fully automated workflow for designing patient-specific orthopaedic implants: Application to total knee arthroplasty.

Background Osteoarthritis affects about 528 million people worldwide, causing pain and stiffness in the joints. Arthroplasty is commonly performed to treat joint osteoarthritis, reducing pain and improving mobility. Nevertheless, a significant share of patients remain unsatisfied with their surgery. Personalised arthroplasty was introduced to improve surgical outcomes however current solutions require delays, making it difficult to integrate in clinical routine. We propose a fully automated workflow to design patient-specific implants for total knee arthroplasty. Methods The proposed pipeline

Varying pixel resolution significantly improves deep learning-based carotid plaque histology segmentation.

Carotid plaques-the buildup of cholesterol, calcium, cellular debris, and fibrous tissues in carotid arteries-can rupture, release microemboli into the cerebral vasculature and cause strokes. The likelihood of a plaque rupturing is thought to be associated with its composition (i.e. lipid, calcium, hemorrhage and inflammatory cell content) and the mechanical properties of the plaque. Automating and digitizing histopathological images of these plaques into tissue specific (lipid and calcified) regions can help us compare histologic findings to in vivo imaging and thereby enable us to optimize m

Fusion of deep transfer learning models with Gannet optimisation algorithm for an advanced image captioning system for visual disabilities.

The issue of generating a natural language explanation of images to define their visual content has garnered significant attention in computer vision (CV) and natural language processing (NLP). It is driven by applications such as image virtual assistants, indexing and retrieval, image perception, and assistance for visually challenged people. While this kind of person utilizes other senses, such as hearing and touch, for identifying events and objects, their quality of life is reduced to a typical level. Automated Image captioning generates captions that will be spoken aloud to individuals wi

Length-scale study in deep learning prediction for non-small cell lung cancer brain metastasis.

Deep learning-assisted digital pathology has demonstrated the potential to profoundly impact clinical practice, even surpassing human pathologists in performance. However, as deep neural network (DNN) architectures grow in size and complexity, their explainability decreases, posing challenges in interpreting pathology features for broader clinical insights into physiological diseases. To better assess the interpretability of digital microscopic images and guide future microscopic system design, we developed a novel method to study the predictive feature length-scale that underpins a DNN's pred

Wavelet-based selection-and-recalibration network for Parkinson's disease screening in OCT images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Parkinson's disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative brain diseases worldwide. Therefore, accurate PD screening is crucial for early clinical intervention and treatment. Recent clinical research indicates that changes in pathology, such as the texture and thickness of the retinal layers, can serve as biomarkers for clinical PD diagnosis based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. However, the pathological manifestations of PD in the retinal layers are subtle compared to the more salient lesions associated with retinal diseases. METHODS: Ins

Closed-Loop Deep Brain Stimulation With Reinforcement Learning and Neural Simulation.

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is effective for movement disorders, particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). However, a closed-loop DBS system using reinforcement learning (RL) for automatic parameter tuning, offering enhanced energy efficiency and the effect of thalamus restoration, is yet to be developed for clinical and commercial applications. In this research, we instantiate a basal ganglia-thalamic (BGT) model and design it as an interactive environment suitable for RL models. Four finely tuned RL agents based on different frameworks, namely Soft Actor-Critic (SAC), Twin Delayed Deep Determi

Contrastive Graph Pooling for Explainable Classification of Brain Networks.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a commonly used technique to measure neural activation. Its application has been particularly important in identifying underlying neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Autism. Recent analysis of fMRI data models the brain as a graph and extracts features by graph neural networks (GNNs). However, the unique characteristics of fMRI data require a special design of GNN. Tailoring GNN to generate effective and domain-explainable features remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a contrastive dual-attention block and

Breast histopathological imaging using ultra-fast fluorescence confocal microscopy to identify cancer lesions at early stage.

Ultrafast fluorescent confocal microscopy is a hypothetical approach for breast cancer detection because of its potential to achieve instantaneous, high-resolution images of cellular-level tissue features. Traditional approaches such as mammography and biopsy are laborious, invasive, and inefficient; confocal microscopy offers many benefits over these approaches. However, confocal microscopy enables the exact differentiation of malignant cells, the expeditious examination of extensive tissue sections, and the optical sectioning of tissue samples into tiny slices. The primary goal should be to

Effective Phoneme Decoding With Hyperbolic Neural Networks for High-Performance Speech BCIs.

OBJECTIVE: Speech brain-computer interfaces (speech BCIs), which convert brain signals into spoken words or sentences, have demonstrated great potential for high-performance BCI communication. Phonemes are the basic pronunciation units. For monosyllabic languages such as Chinese Mandarin, where a word usually contains less than three phonemes, accurate decoding of phonemes plays a vital role. We found that in the neural representation space, phonemes with similar pronunciations are often inseparable, leading to confusion in phoneme classification. METHODS: We mapped the neural signals of phon

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is emerging as an effective complementary solution in the field of rehabilitation for the interaction between patients and robotic assistive devices. Specifically, the somatosensory event-related potentials (ERP) BCI has unique advantage for post-stroke motor rehabilitation scenarios and has been proven feasible on healthy subjects. We conducted the first patient-involved somatosensory ERP-BCI experiment with electric stimulation to evaluate its feasibility for real-world clinical usage. In the experiment, participant selectively attended to electric stimuli appl

Using machine learning to automatically measure kyphotic and lordotic angle measurements on radiographs for children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Measuring the kyphotic angle (KA) and lordotic angle (LA) on lateral radiographs is important to truly diagnose children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. However, it is a time-consuming process to measure the KA because the endplate of the upper thoracic vertebra is normally difficult to identify. To save time and improve measurement accuracy, a machine learning algorithm was developed to automatically extract the KA and LA. The accuracy and reliability of the T1-T12 KA, T5-T12 KA, and L1-L5 LA were reported. A convolutional neural network was trained using 100 radiographs with data augme

Computerized Diagnosis of Liver Tumors From CT Scans Using a Deep Neural Network Approach.

The liver is a frequent site of benign and malignant, primary and metastatic tumors. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are the most common primary liver cancers, and colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) is the most common secondary liver cancer. Although the imaging characteristic of these tumors is central to optimal clinical management, it relies on imaging features that are often non-specific, overlap, and are subject to inter-observer variability. Thus, in this study, we aimed to categorize liver tumors automatically from CT scans using a deep learning

Effectively Detecting Left Bundle Branch Block False Defects in Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN).

UNLABELLED: Left bundle branch block (LBBB) is a frequent source of false positive MPI reports, in patients evaluated for coronary artery disease. PURPOSE: In this work, we evaluated the ability of a CNN-based solution, using transfer learning, to produce an expert-like judgment in recognizing LBBB false defects. METHODS: We collected retrospectively, MPI polar maps, of patients having small to large fixed anteroseptal perfusion defect. Images were divided into two groups. The LBBB group included patients where this defect was judged as false defect by two experts. The LAD group included pat

Identification of Alzheimer associated differentially expressed gene through microarray data and transfer learning-based image analysis.

Major factors contribute to mental stress and enhance the progression of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). The factors that lead to neurodegeneration, such as tau protein hyperphosphorylation and increased amyloid-beta production, can be mimicked in animal stress models. The present study identifies differentially expressed genes (DEGs) data and its corresponding predictive image analysis in rat models. The gene expression profile of GSE72062, GSE85162, GSE143951 and GSE85238 was downloaded from NCBI, GEO archive to analyse DEGs. Functional enrichment and pathway relationship networks, gene

Use of Convolutional Neural Networks for the Detection of u-Serrated Patterns in Direct Immunofluorescence Images to Facilitate the Diagnosis of Epidermolysis Bullosa Acquisita.

The u-serrated immunodeposition pattern in direct immunofluorescence (DIF) microscopy is a recognizable feature and confirmative for the diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA). Due to unfamiliarity with serrated patterns, serration pattern recognition is still of limited use in routine DIF microscopy. The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for the recognition of u-serrated patterns that can assist in the diagnosis of EBA. The nine most commonly used CNNs were trained and validated by using 220,800 manually deline

Leveraging voxel-wise segmentation uncertainty to improve reliability in assessment of paediatric dysplasia of the hip.

PURPOSE: Estimating uncertainty in predictions made by neural networks is critically important for increasing the trust medical experts have in automatic data analysis results. In segmentation tasks, quantifying levels of confidence can provide meaningful additional information to aid clinical decision making. In recent work, we proposed an interpretable uncertainty measure to aid clinicians in assessing the reliability of developmental dysplasia of the hip metrics measured from 3D ultrasound screening scans, as well as that of the US scan itself. In this work, we propose a technique to quanti
