Acute pancreatitis in SARS-CoV-2 infection: A case report from Tanzania.

The pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has mainly affected the respiratory system but has expanded to other systems, including the gastrointestinal system. We present an 80-year-old man with sharp epigastric pain and vomiting. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated pancreatic enzymes, and contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the abdomen suggested acute pancreatitis. He was undergoing treatment for acute pancreatitis when he developed respiratory compromise, leading to the use of oxygen. Computed tomography of the chest revealed bilateral pleural eff

Systemic metastases from central nervous system ependymoma: case report and review of the literature.

Ependymal tumours in adults are rare, accounting for less than 4% of primary tumours of the central nervous system, and exceptionally metastasise outside the nervous system. In this study, we present a case of anaplastic ependymoma, which developed metastases outside the nervous system less than a year after its clinical onset. A healthy 65-year-old woman suddenly presented with drowsiness of unknown origin, accompanied by ingravescent fatigue, inability to maintain the upright posture, headache, nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography study performed in the emergency department showed the pr

Network Biology: Current Status, Applications, Challenges, and Future Prospects.

Network biology provides a systems-level framework for understanding how interactions among molecular components, cells, microbial communities, tissues, and organs generate biological function and disease phenotypes. Recent advances in multiomics, single-cell and spatial profiling, network inference, organoid and organ-on-chip technologies, computational modeling, and artificial intelligence have shifted the field from static molecular maps toward dynamic, multiscale, and predictive network models. Major branches include molecular interaction networks, intracellular regulatory networks, single

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled RNA therapeutic design: from molecular optimization to system-level evaluation.

RNA therapeutics are increasingly moving from empirical screening towards rational, computation-guided design. Recent advances in RNA language models, generative models and structure-aware learning have improved sequence representation, candidate generation and structure-constrained optimization. However, favourable molecular properties do not necessarily translate into desirable biological performance, because therapeutic outcomes also depend on modality-specific mechanisms, delivery and exposure, molecular interactions, cellular state, immune responses and network-level adaptation. Here, we

Exploring quantum frontiers in protein structure prediction: techniques, challenges, and opportunities.

Protein folding is governed by the principle of free energy minimization, where a protein's native tertiary structure corresponds to the global minimum on an energy landscape shaped by quantum mechanical interactions such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and electron delocalization. Despite significant advances in template-based modeling (TBM), ab-initio simulations, and deep learning approaches, classical methods continue to face challenges due to the exponential complexity of the conformational search space and the approximations involved in modeling molecular interactions. Dual-Mode Bio-CM 2 : Multimodal Computational Miniature Mesoscope for Fluorescence and Label-Free Imaging.

Understanding biological function often requires complementary information on molecular identity, morphology, behavior, and physiology acquired simultaneously from the same specimen. Achieving this capability in miniature microscopes remains challenging because integrating multiple imaging contrasts typically increases optical complexity while compromising field of view (FOV), spatial resolution, or form factor. Here we present dual-mode Bio-CM 2 , a multimodal computational miniature mesoscope that simultaneously captures fluorescence and label-free reflectance through a shared optical archit

Advances in GaN Nanowire-Based Optoelectronic Devices.

One-dimensional GaN nanowires and their ternary alloys have developed from a structurally attractive wide-bandgap semiconductor architecture into a versatile platform for optoelectronic devices, neuromorphic functions, and emerging system-level applications. Their significance lies not only in the miniaturization of GaN devices, but also in the way the one-dimensional geometry reshapes strain relaxation, defect propagation, carrier transport, surface interaction, heterostructure design and optical confinement. Major progress in GaN nanowire-based optoelectronics is systematically discussed her

Computational aberration correction enables full-thickness retinal imaging with adaptive optics optical coherence tomography.

Biomedical optical imaging has become a key tool for noninvasive evaluation of the human eye, offering a unique window into both ocular and systemic diseases. Among these techniques, adaptive optics optical coherence tomography (AO-OCT) stands out for its ability to achieve volumetric, in vivo cellular-level imaging of the retina. However, the high numerical aperture associated with AO-OCT restricts the depth of focus (DOF) to tens of micrometers, making it challenging to obtain sharply resolved features across the full retinal thickness within a single volume. A common solution is to acquire

A Probabilistic Synthesis of Malaria Epidemiology: Exposure, Infection, Parasite Densities, and Detection.

The epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria presents a unique set of challenges due to the complicated dynamics of infection, immunity, disease, and detection. Studies of malaria epidemiology commonly measure malaria parasite densities or prevalence, but since malaria is so complex with so many factors to consider, a complete mathematical synthesis of malaria epidemiology has been elusive. Here, we take a new approach. From a simple model of malaria exposure and infection in human cohorts as they age, we develop random variables describing the multiplicity of infection (MoI) and the age

Extensive Aortic Thromboembolism in a Patient With Erdheim-Chester Disease: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare disease that affects multiple systems and is characterized by non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. Classic clinical signs include long bone infiltration, central nervous system involvement, diabetes insipidus, and sheathing of the entire aorta. However, thrombosis is not recognized as a typical cardiac manifestation of ECD. Here, we report the case of an ECD patient with extensive arterial thrombus formation and embolism in several sections of the aorta. CASE: A 36-year-old woman was admitted due to recurrent fever and left finger cyanosis for

An Intervention to Tag Findings Suspicious for Lung Cancer on Chest Computed Tomography Has Good Sensitivity and Number Needed to Diagnose.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, Kaiser Permanente Northern California implemented an intervention to improve follow-up for pulmonary findings on diagnostic chest computed tomography (CT). The intervention includes tagging CT reports with the prefix "#PUL" followed by a character (0-6 or X) to track specific findings. #PUL5, indicating "suspicious for malignancy," triggers automatic referral for multidisciplinary care review. METHODS: Among patients who obtained an index chest CT exam from August 2015 to July 2017 without an exam in the previous 2 years, we computed the frequency of lung cancer diagnosis

Successful Use of Tissue Plasminogen Activator for Saddle Pulmonary Embolism in Perimesencephalic Nonaneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (PNSH) is characterized by a typical pattern of localized pretruncal hemorrhage on head computed tomography. PNSH is usually associated with a benign clinical course and a lower incidence of complications. The etiology is unknown, but many explanations have been proposed, including venous injury or rupture followed by thrombosis of a ruptured microaneurysm. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 48-year-old man on apixaban for multiple venous thromboembolisms presented with the worst headache of his life associated with blurry vision, nausea, a

Placido-based indices of corneal irregularity.

PURPOSE: To construct a set of indices that measure the irregularity of the anterior corneal surface, computed directly from the image of the Placido disks reflected on the cornea. Besides the high sensitivity and specificity, this approach allows bypassing the surface or curvature reconstruction step that is currently performed by the software of any commercial Placido topographer. METHODS: Several basic indices are proposed to detect irregularities on the anterior surface of the cornea, via analyzing some geometric and mathematical properties of the mires. These individual primary indices a

[The suitability of digital colposcopy for telematic applications].

Since carcinoma of the cervix is one of the most common cancers in women, screening of the cervix has acquired considerable importance. Colposcopy is a simple diagnostic method of detecting suspicious changes at an early stage. Shortcomings of this method are its low specificity and high inter- and intra-observer variability. A clinical pilot study was therefore carried out to investigate the advantages of a digital colposcopic system comprising a binocular colposcope coupled to a CCD camera and a computer. The aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability of diagnostic findings of the cerv
