Media components were optimized by statistical design for cell growth and PHB production of Methylobacterium extorquens DSMZ 1340. Four important components of growth media were optimized by central composite design. The growth increased from an OD=1.35 for Choi medium as control to an OD=2.15 for optimal medium. This study compared the levels of 18 red cell elements and 22 hair elements in 46 patients (median age: 36.2 yr) diagnosed with PMS (premenstrual syndrome) to 50 normals (median age: 37.7 yr). Significantly lower amounts of calcium, chromium, copper, and manganese were found in the blood of patients with PMS. The ratios of Mg/Ca and K/Na and toxic metals such as lead, arsenic, and germanium were significantly elevated in the PMS patients. The use of complementary medication is on the rise worldwide. More often than not, the treating physicians are unaware of this and also unfamiliar with the potential benefit or toxicity of the agents. Here, we present the case of a 39-year-old woman who presented with new onset of syncope as a result of acquired long QT syndrome secondary to taking a cesium chloride supplement. A brief discussion of the pathophysiology of this agent follows the case presentation.

A 57-year-old male without pre- or intraoperative arrhythmia developed ventricular tachyarrhythmia immediately following hepatectomy. Postoperative examination of plasma electrolytes revealed severe hypomagnesemia (0.16 mmol.l-1). The arrhythmia may have been caused by hypomagnesemia and an imbalance between supply and demand of oxygen in the myocardium, due to hypovolemia and severe anemia from massive hemorrhage. We recommend that measurement of plasma magnesium concentration be included in all perioperative laboratory examinations.

We report a case of congenital magnesium-losing kidney with associated hypercalciuria and ocular derangements consisting of myopia, bilateral macular colobomata and bilateral papillary dysversion and hypoplasia. Our patient provides further evidence of the existence of an oculorenal syndrome associating abnormalities in the renal handling of magnesium and calcium, and myopia and chorioretinal disease.
