The authors present the results of examining the content of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-phenylacetic or homovanillic acid (the principal end metabolite of dopamine) in the ventricular fluid of patients suffering from various extrapyramidal diseases. An electroneuromyographic examination of 132 patients with pseudohypertrophic and myosclerotic forms of myodystrophies, collagenoses, mucopolysaccharidoses, Marfan's disease, and Chernogubov-Ehlers-Danlos' disease was carried out. A relationship between the duration of the M-response potential and the state of the interstitial connective tissue of the skeletal muscles was revealed. This duration appeared to be longer in cases of proliferation, sclerosis, and fibrosis of the interstitial tissue, and shorter in cases of a deficiency of the collagen fibres and increase of their elasticity.

On the basis of examining 55 patients with Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome psychic disturbances thought to be not characteristic of the disease before are described. A suggestion on nosological independence of the disease, and on possible participation of the cholinergic systems in the pathogenesis of the ailment is raised. The results of various therapy methods including the comatose one not used in that disease before are presented. The comatose therapy seems to be an effective method of treating that disease.

Results of clinical and electrophysiological examinations of 52 children with tic-type hyperkineses are presented. Nine of them had generalized tic (Gilles de la Tourette's disease), and 43 had local forms. All the children were examined electroencephalographically; 26 children had, in addition, an electronystagmographic examination. Changes pointing to organic affections of the brain were revealed. The authors recommend that anticonvulsants be used for tic therapy. In children with generalized tic the anticonvulsants may be combined with haloperidol.

Rare unusual syndromes of hereditary pathology are the most frequent in inbred families. The authors present a clinico-genealogical description of an inbred family in which the neurocutaneous syndrome was observed in four sibs. Two observations of cerebral circulation disturbances developed by young women who used contraceptives are described. In one of them thrombosis of the median cerebral artery was diagnosed angiographically. In the other woman thromboses of the dural veins were revealed on autopsy. Treatment with atropine in comatose doses was given to 11 patients suffering from schizophrenia with obsessive disturbances. A favourable effect was noted when there were no hypochondriacal symptoms in the disease clinical picture. Twenty-two patients with neurotic states received atropine in non-comatose doses. Positive results were noted in patients with obsessions in the disease clinical picture, as well as in patients with reactive depressions. In patients with hypochondriacal disturbances, this form of the therapy appeared to be of no effect.

Under examination there were 100 patients with paranoid schizophrenia who had reached an old age. In all the patients signs of delusion reduction were observed at the late stages of the disease. It was shown that most delusional disorders tended to transform into residual ones and to become peculiar manifestations of the derangement. Against this background it was actual delusional experiences that persisted most frequently. More and more place in their structure took psychopathological elements that reflected various aspects of the ageing of the patients' psychosis.

Using the clinico-catamnestic method (supplemented with some laboratory examinations) the author observed 126 patients with neuroses, in the clinical picture of which systemic disorders were prevalent. In 30 preschool children the efficacy of various psychotherapeutic methods in the treatment of spasmophemia was estimated. The effect of group psychotherapy, play therapy and age-modified variants of autogenous training is described. Importance of family psychotherapy is determined, and attempts at specifying the most typical pathological family situations are made. It is noted that the psychotherapy plays an important role in the treatment of spasmophemia at the preschool age, and contributes to a stable social adaptation of the child.

The paper discusses 8 cases with the syndrome of alcoholic embryopathy (5 boys and 3 girls aged from 8 to 14 years). All children examined had specific craniofacial abnormalities, oligophrenia, small height and weight at birth, microcephaly, combined in some cases with different defects of development (defect of interatrial septum, cleft palate, spina bifida). Two cases of alcoholic embryopathy are given in detail. The significance of different factors in the pathogenesis of this syndrome is discussed.

The author investigated the hemocoagulation system in 59 children with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency caused by sequelae of natal inadequacy of the cervical division of the vertebral column and vertebral arteries. In children examined, pronounced thromboelastographic changes were noted. These changes pointed to a tendency to hypercoagulation combined with manifestations of hypocoagulation in the third phase of the blood clotting. This is an indication of activation of the secondary anticoagulation mechanism which plays a compensatory role in preventing intravascular thrombosis.
