A hybrid simulation model for pre-operative planning of transsphenoidal encephalocele.

Congenital transsphenoidal encephalocele (CTE) surgical correction is a challenging procedure. Although rare, this anomaly, characterized with neural herniation elements, including the pituitary gland or optic pathway through the sphenoid bone with anatomical alteration, can be presented in many different ways and should be individually analyzed. Significant advances in medical technology and the 3D models may simulate the complex anatomical relations of the human body. Nowadays, medical education relies on the availability of standardized materials that can reliably emulate human anatomy. The

A composite hydrogel-3D printed thermoplast osteochondral anchor as example for a zonal approach to cartilage repair: in vivo performance in a long-term equine model.

Recent research has been focusing on the generation of living personalized osteochondral constructs for joint repair. Native articular cartilage has a zonal structure, which is not reflected in current constructs and which may be a cause of the frequent failure of these repair attempts. Therefore, we investigated the performance of a composite implant that further reflects the zonal distribution of cellular component both in vitro and in vivo in a long-term equine model. Constructs constituted of a 3D-printed poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) bone anchor from which reinforcing fibers protruded into t

A facile foaming-polymerization strategy to prepare 3D MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogels for efficient removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II).

A novel three dimensional MnO2 modified biochar-based porous hydrogel (MBCG) was fabricated to overcome the low sorption capacity and difficulty in solid-liquid separation of biochar (BC) for Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal. BC was initially modified by a rapid redox reaction between KMnO4 and Mn(II) acetate, and then incorporated into a polyacrylamide gel network via a rapid and facile free-radical polymerization. A foaming method was deliberately introduced during the fabrication to establish interpenetrated porous structure inside the network. Various characterizations were employed to examine th

Ratiometric fluorescent sensing system for drug residue analysis: Highly sensitive immunosensor using dual-emission quantum dots hybrid and compact smartphone based-device.

Immunoassays such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are utilized extensively for detecting protein biomarkers and small molecules in healthcare, environmental monitoring, and food analysis. Unfortunately, the current strategies for immunoassays often require sophisticated apparatus such as a microplate reader, which might not be available in resource-limited areas. To mitigate this problem, we designed a compact smartphone based-device and a multicolor response immunosensor. First, we designed a compact and cost-effective 3D-printed attachment, where a light-emitting diode was u

Craniofacial Interventions in Children.

Craniofacial interventions are common and the surgical options continue to grow. The issues encountered include micrognathia, macroglossia, midface hypoplasia, hearing loss, facial nerve palsy, hemifacial microsomia, and microtia. In addition, a unifying theme is complex upper airway obstruction. Throughout a child's life the focus of interventions may change from airway management to speech, hearing, and language optimization, and finally to decannulation and procedures aimed at social integration and self-esteem. Otolaryngologists play an important role is this arena and provide high-quality

Effects of magnesium coating on bone-implant interfaces with and without polyether-ether-ketone particle interference: A rabbit model based on porous Ti6Al4V implants.

We investigated the effects of magnesium (Mg) on osteogenesis and bone resorption at a porous structure interface. A three-dimensional (3D)-printed porous Ti6Al4V implant coated with Mg was introduced, and polyether-ether-ketone wear particles were added to generate an animal model of implant loosening. We also examined the effects of Mg leach liquor on osteoblast/osteoclast gene expression, alkaline phosphatase activity, collagen secretion, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity, and bone resorption in vitro. Mg inhibited the early stage of osteoclast differentiation and inhibited bone

Low-melt bioactive glass-reinforced 3D printing akermanite porous cages with highly improved mechanical properties for lumbar spinal fusion.

Although great strides have been made in medical technology, low back/neck pain and intervertebral disc degeneration initiated from disc degenerative disease remains a clinical challenge. Within the field of regenerative medicine therapy, we have sought to improve the biomechanical transformation of spinal fusion procedures conducted using biodegradable porous implants. Specifically, we have focused on developing mechanically strong bioceramic cages for spinal fusion and functional recovery. Herein, we fabricated the akermanite (AKE) ceramic-based porous cages using low-melting bioactive glass

Primary Dural Repair via an Endoscopic Endonasal Corridor: Preliminary Development of a 3D-Printed Model for Training.

Objectives  Endonasal suturing is an investigational method for dural repair that has been reported to decrease the incidence of cerebrospinal fluid fistula. This method requires handling of single-shaft instrumentation in the narrow endonasal corridor. In this study, we designed a low-cost, surgical model using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology to simulate dural repair through the endonasal corridor and subsequently assess the utility of the model for surgical training. Methods  Using an Ultimaker 2+ printer, a 3D-printed replica of the cranial base and nasal cavity was fitted with t

Application-matched point-of-care 3D printing of functionalized polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites for patient-specific craniomaxillofacial implants.

BACKGROUND: Native polyetheretherketone (PEEK) exhibits limitations in mechanical strength, radiographic visibility, and bioactivity for craniomaxillofacial (CMF) applications. This proof-of-concept study establishes the feasibility of point-of-care (POC) manufacturing for three functionalized PEEK composites for patient-specific CMF implants using a high-temperature material extrusion (MEX) system, with application-specific material selection to overcome these limitations. METHODS: Carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK (CFR-PEEK), barium sulfate-filled PEEK (BaSO₄-PEEK), and biphasic calcium phosphat

A portable fluorescence probe-based sensor for rapid field detection of zinc ions in water.

Excessive Zn2+ in water poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health. Conventional methods for Zn2+ detection either rely on bulky instrumentation or suffer from poor quantification capability, limiting their suitability for field analysis. Recent integration of three-dimensional (3D)-printed platforms and smartphone imaging presents an opportunity for field analysis. Therefore, a small molecule fluorescent probe (SWJT-K1) was combined with a 3D-printed homemade portable device and a smartphone for field analysis of Zn2+ in water. SWJT-K1 undergoes a rapid green-to-blue fluorescence c

Incorporation of forsterite nanoparticles in a 3D printed polylactic acid/polyvinylpyrrolidone scaffold for bone tissue regeneration applications.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has facilitated the fabrication of customized scaffolds for the repair of complex bone defects. In this study, 3D-printed scaffolds composed of a mixture of polylactic acid-polyvinylpyrrolidone (PLA-PVP) incorporating different amounts of forsterite (F; Mg2SiO4) nanoparticles were fabricated using fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique. The incorporation of PVP and F nanoparticles into the PLA scaffold significantly decreased the water drop contact angle. The mechanical properties of the PLA-PVP scaffold were enhanced with the addition of 10 % F nanoparticles

Distinguishing active HIV-1 infection from vaccine-induced seropositivity in HIV vaccine trial participants.

Vaccine-induced seropositivity (VISP) causes antibodies produced by HIV-1 vaccines to react with standard serological tests, complicating diagnosis and leading to false positives. To distinguish VISP from true HIV infections, we developed a rapid, multiplexed companion electrochemical assay that integrates a three-dimensional-printed device with screen-printed electrodes coated with antigen, antibody, and methylene blue-labeled antisense oligonucleotide probes. The test delivers quantitative results within 5 minutes with calculated analytical limits of detection of 5.88 picograms per millilite

A Surface-Mediated Biomimetic Porous Polyether-Ether-Ketone Scaffold for Regulating Immunity and Promoting Osteogenesis.

The repair of critical-sized bone defects remains a major challenge for clinical orthopedic surgery. Here, we develop a surface biofunctionalized three-dimensional (3D) porous polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) scaffold that can simultaneously promote osteogenesis and regulate macrophage polarization. The scaffold is created using polydopamine (PDA)-assisted immobilization of silk fibroin (SF) and the electrostatic self-assembly of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) on a 3D-printed porous PEEK scaffold. The SF/nano-HA functionalized surface provides a bone-like microenvironment for osteoblast
