Leadership and the psychology of turnarounds.

Turnaround champions--those leaders who manage to bring distressed organizations back from the brink of failure--are often acclaimed for their canny financial and strategic decision making. But having studied their work closely, Harvard Business School's Rosabeth Moss Kanter emphasizes another aspect of their achievement. These leaders reverse the cycle of corporate decline through deliberate interventions that increase the level of communication, collaboration, and respect among their managers. Ailing companies descend into what Kanter calls a "death spiral," which typically works this way: A

Cognitive coping and depressive symptoms in the elderly: a longitudinal study.

The objective of the present longitudinal study was to examine the relationship between cognitive coping strategies and depressive symptoms at old age. At the two and a half year follow-up study, a community sample of 99 people aged 67 years and older filled out a self-report questionnaire comprising the Geriatric Depression Scale, the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and a negative life events checklist. Cognitive coping strategies seemed to play an important role in relation to depressive symptoms in late life. Elderly persons with more depressive symptoms reported to use acceptanc

Ways of coping in women with eating disorders.

The aim of this study was to investigate the strategies used for coping with stress in eating disorder patients. Twenty-four anorexia nervosa (AN) patients, 66 bulimia nervosa (BN) patients, and 30 female control subjects completed a revised Ways of Coping Checklist, indicating how they dealt with a self-nominated stressor. The AN and BN patients used proportionately more avoidance than control subjects. The BN patients used proportionately more wishful thinking and sought less social support than control subjects but patients with AN did not differ significantly from either BN or control grou

Relationship of clients' reasons for dropping out of treatment to outcome and satisfaction.

Forty-nine adult drop-outs and parents of 37 child drop-outs were contacted 4 months after intake and asked why they terminated treatment. Outcome and satisfaction data also were obtained for these clients, 45 treatment completers, and 51 who were still in treatment. Problem improvement, environmental obstacles, and dissatisfaction with treatment were the reasons most often cited for dropping out. For adults, client measures indicated that "problem improved" drop-outs had superior outcome and satisfaction and that "dissatisfied" drop-outs had inferior outcome and satisfaction relative to other

[The nosological entity bulimia nerviosa].

Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are at the present moment, two well defined clinical entities among the group of the eating disorders. The psychopathological differentiation of both syndromes has a great importance for diagnosis and therapy. The authors make a phenomenological description, based on case histories of patients with diagnostics of anorexia and bulimia nervosa, and try to establish an approach to the essential symptomatology of those disorders. The presence of affective symptomatology--depressive, but not exclusively--in the eating behaviour disorders in general and particula

Contributions of Genetic Liability and the COVID-19 Pandemic to Rising Psychopathology Among Youth in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health issues were surging during COVID-19 pandemic. Yet it is unclear whether the pandemic amplified pre-existing vulnerabilities for psychiatric disorders. METHODS: Using the longitudinal data from Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study© (n = 7,560, 2~3 waves of assessments before pandemic and 2~3 waves after first nation-wide pandemic lock-down), we evaluated associations of the pandemic, genetic liabilities to psychiatric disorders, and their interactions with 20 different measures of psychopathology. Genomic common factor models aggregated genom

Behavioral covariation in the treatment of chronic pain.

The successful use of operant procedures to alter behaviors associated with various medical conditions suggests that such behaviors may be learned and that the principles of learning may be applied not only to treatment but also to the study of the pathogenesis of illness behavior. The present study, conducted within an ongoing neuromuscular research project, assessed the covariation of behaviors associated with chronic pain within and across behavioral and drug approaches to treatment. Problems of screaming and five other behaviors (including self-reports of pain) were measured across conditi

Do Genetic Factors Explain the Links Between Callous-Unemotional, Attention Hyperactivity and Oppositional Defiant Problems in Toddlers?

Research demonstrates that callous-unemotional (CU) behaviors, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Problems (ODD) are related, but little is known about the sources of covariation among the three externalizing behaviors. The present study looked at genetic and environmental links between all three behavioral domains in twins at ages 2 and 3 years (MZ = 145, DZ = 169), a time when CU behaviors are beginning to emerge. CU, ADHD, and ODD behaviors as assessed using the Child Behavior Checklist 1.5-5 (Achenbach and Rescorla 2000) were strongly interrelated at b

New phenotypes associated with 3q29 duplication syndrome: Results from the 3q29 registry.

3q29 duplication syndrome (3q29dup) is a rare genomic disorder caused by a 1.6 Mb duplication (GRCh38 chr3:195,998,000-197,623,000). Case reports indicate the 3q29dup is likely to be pathogenic, but the full range of manifestations is not well understood. We used the 3q29 registry (https://3q29.com) to ascertain 31 individuals with 3q29dup, the largest cohort ever surveyed in a systematic way. For comparison, we ascertained 117 individuals with the reciprocal 3q29 deletion and 64 typically developing controls. We used a custom medical and demographic questionnaire to assess physical and develo

Anger-irritability as a mediator of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder risk for adolescent alcohol use and the contribution of coping skills.

BACKGROUND: Research on susceptibility to alcohol use disorder within the attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) population has begun to expand examination of putative moderators and mediators in order to develop effective treatments. Specific dysregulated emotions have been separately associated with ADHD and with alcohol use difficulties. The current study is the first to conjointly study these variables by testing anger-irritability as a mediator of ADHD risk for adolescent alcohol use. METHODS: Frequency of binge drinking, drunkenness, and alcohol problems were examined for 142 c

Do parental traumatic experiences have a role in the psychological functioning of early adolescents with binge eating disorder?

PURPOSE: Few studies have addressed the psychological characteristics of adolescents with binge eating disorder (BED). No research has focused on the psychological functioning of these adolescents' parents or on the prevalence of traumatic experiences among them. METHODS: In this study, 202 adolescents aged 11-13 and their parents were recruited from mental health clinics to complete the youth self-report (YSR), the response evaluation measure for youth (REM-71), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Symptom Check-List (SCL-90-R), and the traumatic experience checklist (TEC). [Periodic movements of the limbs during sleep in childhood].

INTRODUCTION: Periodic movements of the limbs (PML) whilst sleeping is a disorder included in the group of intrinsic dysomnias which cause problems of insomnia and somnolence during the day. It is usually associated with the restless legs syndrome (it occurs in 80% of the patients with this syndrome) although PML may occasionally be an isolated finding. The prevalence of the disease is of 11%. It usually occurs in patients aged over 50 years, and the frequency increase with age. It is uncommon in persons aged under 30 years. In children it is almost unknown. When it does occur in this age grou

Theoretical perspectives on language and communication problems in mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

We argue that researchers interested in language and communication problems in mental retardation or any other developmental disorder should view such problems as emerging within the broader context of the behavioral profile, or phenotype, associated with a particular genetic condition. This will require understanding the direct and indirect effects of genes on the development of language and communication and thereby an understanding of the complex relations that exist between language and other dimensions of psychological and behavioral functioning as well as an understanding of the environm

Sleep behaviors and disorders in children and adolescents evaluated at psychiatric clinics.

The parents of 150 children and adolescents, evaluated at a university psychiatry outpatient clinic and a mental health center, were surveyed to determine the frequency of various sleep-related behaviors. This clinic sample was compared with a nonclinic sample of 309 subjects from the general population. A significantly higher incidence of restless sleep, limb movements, nightmares, night terrors, reluctance going to sleep, sleeping with others, fear of dying, fears of dark, and daytime overactivity differentiated the clinic population from the nonclinic population. There were no significant d

Effects of different husbandry systems and attitudes of cattle farmers on the behavior and welfare of cattle in Germany.

This study examines the relationship between the attitude of cattle farmers toward their animals and the occurrence of behavioral and health problems in cattle. Various factors, including animal behavior, husbandry conditions and the frequency of diseases, are taken into account. The results of an online survey of 1,242 German cattle farmers indicated that a range of factors, including the husbandry system, the number of cattle, grazing practices and the human-animal relationship, can influence the occurrence of abnormal behavior in cattle, such as tongue play, mutual sucking, horse-like sitti

Prenatal alcohol exposure and sleep-wake behaviors: exploratory and naturalistic observations in the clinical setting and in an animal model.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical research and studies using animal models have revealed a complex and relatively under-explored interaction between prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and alterations in sleep-wake behaviors. OBJECTIVES: To utilize a structured naturalistic observation-based methodology, consisting of descriptive elements, to provide insight into possible links between altered sleep and disruptive daytime presentations in children and adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). To apply a similar structured behavioral observation protocol in a PAE animal model to compare outcom

Spatial modelling of soil mechanical-hydraulic behavior for precision agriculture.

Within-field soil management in Precision Agriculture is still largely based on scalar observations or on geostatistical modelling of individual curve parameters, despite the inherently functional nature of many soil properties. This study proposes a geostatistical framework for the spatial modelling and zoning of function-valued soil descriptors, explicitly accounting for data heterogeneity, spatial non-stationarity, and multiscale variability. Two agronomically relevant functional responses are considered: soil penetration resistance as a function of soil moisture and soil water retention as

Bio-inspired cognitive robotics vs. embodied AI for socially acceptable, civilized robots.

Although cognitive robotics is still a work in progress, the trend is to "free" robots from the assembly lines of the third industrial revolution and allow them to "enter human society" in large numbers and many forms, as forecasted by Industry 4.0 and beyond. Cognitive robots are expected to be intelligent, designed to learn from experience and adapt to real-world situations rather than being preprogrammed with specific actions for all possible stimuli and environmental conditions. Moreover, such robots are supposed to interact closely with human partners, cooperating with them, and this impl
