Clinical comparison of the autologous quadriceps tendon (BQT) and the autologous patella tendon (BPTB) for the reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament.

The use of the BPTB-autograft is a very common method for ACL reconstruction. Nevertheless, the problem of the typical donor-site-morbidity is unresolved. Recently, a transplant of quadriceps tendon, with an attached bone block (BQT) has been increasingly relied upon. The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical results of a group of patients after arthroscopic ACL reconstruction using either BPTB or quadriceps tendon autograft after a minimum follow-up of 2 years in terms of knee joint stability and function using both subjective and objective criteria. Retrospective study. A total o

Motor Learning of Knee Joint Kinematics in Patients Within the First Year After ACL Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction (ACLR) does not normalize the asymmetric knee biomechanics during gait that are related to the later development of post-traumatic osteoarthritis. ACL rupture and reconstruction have negative neuromuscular implications, disrupting knee joint afferent inputs that may be essential for central nervous system adaptability and motor learning. Here, we examined the ability of patients after ACLR to adapt knee joint biomechanics using a split-belt treadmill locomotor learning paradigm compared with uninjured controls. HYPOTHESIS:

Enhanced sensitivity of skeletal muscle growth in offspring of mice long-term selected for high body mass in response to a maternal high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet during lactation.

AIM: To investigate the effects of a high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet fed to mice of different genotypes during pregnancy and/or lactation on offspring skeletal muscle growth and metabolism. METHODS: Pregnant mice from strains selected for high body mass (DU6) or endurance running performance (DUhLB) and from an unselected control strain (DUK) were fed iso-energetic diets containing 20 % (C) or 40 % protein and low carbohydrate (HP) from mating to weaning at day 21 of age. At birth, offspring were cross-fostered resulting in different exposure to maternal prenatal-preweaning diets (C-C, HP-

Quadriceps Strength Is Influenced by Skeletal Maturity in Adolescents Recovering From Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries and anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions (ACLRs) are common, especially in adolescent patients. Recovery of strength, jumping performance, and perceived/subjective function are often used to make a return to sports decisions after injury. It is unknown how skeletal maturity may influence strength recovery after ACLR. The purpose of this study was to compare the strength and patient-reported outcomes in adolescent ACLR patients with and without open distal femur and proximal tibia physes. METHODS: One hundred seventeen consecutive patients

Quadriceps Strength and Kinesiophobia Predict Long-Term Function After ACL Reconstruction: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Many patients live with long-term deficits in knee function after an anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). However, research is inconclusive as to which physical performance measure is most strongly related to long-term patient-reported outcomes after ACLR. HYPOTHESIS: Quadriceps strength would be most strongly associated with patient-reported long-term outcomes after ACLR. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 3. METHODS: A total of 40 patients (29 female) consented and participated an average of 10.9 years post-ACLR (range, 5-20 years). Pat

Dietary nitrate reduces resting metabolic rate: a randomized, crossover study in humans.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate, which is an inorganic anion abundant in vegetables, increases the efficiency of isolated human mitochondria. Such an effect might be reflected in changes in the resting metabolic rate (RMR) and formation of reactive oxygen species. The bioactivation of nitrate involves its active accumulation in saliva followed by a sequential reduction to nitrite, nitric oxide, and other reactive nitrogen species. OBJECTIVE: We studied effects of inorganic nitrate, in amounts that represented a diet rich in vegetables, on the RMR in healthy volunteers. DESIGN: In a randomized, double-bl

Gait patterns differ between ACL-reconstructed athletes who pass return-to-sport criteria and those who fail.

BACKGROUND: The current standard of practice for an athlete to return to sport after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is varied. Attempt to return to activity is typically advised 6 months after surgery, but functional performance deficits and gait abnormalities are often still evident and may have important implications on future function. HYPOTHESIS: When comparing the involved and uninvolved limbs, patients who failed return-to-sport (RTS) criteria would demonstrate (1) smaller peak knee angles, extensor moments, and peak power absorption at the knee of the involved limb and

Two- to 4-year follow-up to a comparison of home versus physical therapy-supervised rehabilitation programs after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: There have been no long-term follow-up studies comparing a predominantly home-based rehabilitation program with a standard physical therapy program after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Demonstrating the long-term success of such a cost-effective program would be beneficial to guide future rehabilitation practice. PURPOSE: To determine whether there were any differences in long-term outcome between recreational athletes who performed a physical therapy-supervised rehabilitation program and those who performed a primarily home-based rehabilitation program in the fi

Acute responses of inflammatory markers, glucose, and myoglobin in blood following neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

PURPOSE: Physical inactivity contributes to systemic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) offers an alternative to exercise for individuals unable to perform voluntary physical activity. This study investigated whether a single submaximal NMES session alters inflammation-related proteins, muscle-damage markers and glucose levels in healthy adults. METHODS: Thirty-six healthy adults underwent a 2-hour NMES-session targeting the quadriceps, hamstring and gluteal muscles using wearable NMES-pants. Stimulation was delivered at individually tolerated

Acute dose-response effect of photobiomodulation therapy on 5-km running performance in trained runners: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has been advocated as a potential intervention to improve muscle performance and recovery in the health and sports context. However, the short- and long-term effects of PBMT on endurance running performance remain under-researched and controversial. The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute dose-response effect of PBMT with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on endurance performance and rating of perceived exertion (RPE; 6-20 Borg) during a 5-km running trial in recreational runners. In a crossover design, eighteen young adult runners (28.7 ± 7.8 years)

Ratings of perceived thigh and back exertion in forest workers during repetitive lifting using squat and stoop techniques.

STUDY DESIGN: Local thigh and low back perceived exertion (RPE), sagittal peak load moments, and leg and trunk muscular activity during repe … ies, which combined with the relatively high assessed thigh exertions, leads to the hypothesis that quadriceps muscle exertion is the "weak link" for the squat technique. The study also indicates a discrepancy between the measured and perceived low back stress in squat repetitive lifting.
