We present a rare manifestation of a chronic mandibular wound with a traumatic diathesis. A 38-year-old male patient sought medical consultation because of painless swelling in the mandibular symphysis and mild paresthesia of the lower lip. He mentioned a history of physical trauma to the mandibular symphysis 12 months ago. The radiographic evaluation and CT scan showed gross destruction of bone leading to a well-defined radiolucent lesion without any sclerosing margins. The histological examination revealed numerous spindle-shaped fibroblasts arranged in a fascicular pattern and scattered mul

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of repetitive injuries has been judged to be of limited importance in the public health context. A study was therefore initiated in order to analyse all types of single and repetitive injuries using a longitudinal approach.
METHODS: Hospital care, medical costs and risk factors were examined for single and repetitive severe injuries. A cross-sectional survey with a 12-year follow-up was performed. Questionnaire information from a survey of a random sample of the adult population 20-89 years old in 1984 in Stockholm County were linked to the Swedish national inpatien

This article reports the results of an emergency room study carried out in 1987 in three hospitals in Acapulco, Mexico. All patients were interviewed and breath tested for alcohol consumption. The data were analyzed using the case-control methodology. Cases were falls, motor vehicle accidents, fights and assaults, and home accidents. The control group included patients for whom accidents are less frequently reported as alcohol related, i.e., those reporting work place accidents, animal bites and recreational accidents. For positive breathalyzer readings (> or = 10 mg/100 ml of blood alcohol),

BACKGROUND: Falls are among the most common adverse events in hospitalized patients, with about 30% leading to injury. We developed a machine learning model to predict which in-hospital fall events would lead to patient injury, thereby supporting post-fall risk stratification.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 410 patients who had experienced falls at a tertiary general hospital in China. Among them, 134 patients (32.7%) had fall-related injuries. The dataset was divided into training and test sets at a 7:3 ratio by outcome-stratified random sampling. Least absolute shrinkage and

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of patient falls in the hospital result in injury. This study was conducted to determine whether injurious falls were associated with increased hospital length of stay (LOS), discharge to a place other than home, and in-hospital mortality.
METHODS: A secondary data analysis from a prospective case-control study was conducted in 24 medical/surgical units in four hospitals in the United States. Patients who fell and sustained an injury were matched with at least one control patient who was on the same unit, at the same time, for a similar number of days on the unit at the

OBJECTIVE: To apprise readers about this rare but severest form of traumatic spine injury and its surgical management.
BACKGROUND: Complete fracture dislocation and subluxation (>100%) of 1 vertebral body in the coronal or sagittal plane with respect to the adjacent vertebra is defined as spondyloptosis. In coronal spondyloptosis the subluxated vertebral bodies lie beside each other, and the condition is lateraloptosis. Patients with lateraloptosis present unique surgical challenges because reduction and achieving realignment of spinal column require meticulous planning and execution.

BACKGROUND: Trauma centers are seeing an increasing number of geriatric patients that are more susceptible to injuries even from relatively minor insults such as a ground level fall (GLF). As life expectancy increases, people are living in the geriatric age bracket for decades and often use anticoagulation agents for various comorbidities. We hypothesize that this patient population is not homogenous and we investigated the injury patterns and outcomes after GLF as a function of age and anticoagulation use. We also sought to identify injury patterns and patient characteristics of GLF patients.

Along with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is considered one of the "signature wounds" of combat operations in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom [OIF]) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom [OEF]), but the role of mTBI in the clinical profiles of Veterans with other comorbid forms of post-deployment psychopathology is poorly understood. The current study explored the deployment risk and postdeployment health profiles of heavy drinking OIF and OEF Veterans as a function of mTBI. Sixty-nine heavy-drinking OIF/OEF Veterans were recruited through a Veter

INTRODUCTION: Wrist fractures are common in older adults and are expected to increase because of ageing populations worldwide. The introduction of plate and screw fixation has changed the management of this trauma in many patients. For policymaking it is essential to gain insight into trends in epidemiology and healthcare utilisation. The purpose of this study was to determine trends in incidence, hospitalisation and operative treatment of wrist fractures.
METHODS: A population-based study of patients aged 50 years and older using the Dutch National Injury Surveillance System and the National
