Epidemiological patterns and trends of respiratory syncytial virus in Guangdong Province, China, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute respiratory tract infections worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) substantially altered the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses. However, post-pandemic changes in RSV epidemiology and their associations with meteorological factors remain insufficiently characterized in subtropical regions of China. METHOD: Based on 38,541 RSV test records collected in Guangdong Province from July 1, 2019 to July 2, 2023, the epidemic characteristics were analyzed across the pre-p

The risk of NTM pulmonary infection associated with trace metal exposure from public distribution system water in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) pulmonary infection (NTM PI) varies geographically in the United States (US). Previous studies indicate that trace metals in environmental source water increase NTM PI risk. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of trace metals, chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), molybdenum (Mo), strontium (Sr), and vanadium (V) in public distribution system water on NTM PI risk among susceptible persons in the US. METHODS: We studied NTM PI risk as a function of trace metal exposure from public distribution system water in two US patient populations: (1)

Local impact of temperature and precipitation on West Nile virus infection in Culex species mosquitoes in northeast Illinois, USA.

BACKGROUND: Models of the effects of environmental factors on West Nile virus disease risk have yielded conflicting outcomes. The role of precipitation has been especially difficult to discern from existing studies, due in part to habitat and behavior characteristics of specific vector species and because of differences in the temporal and spatial scales of the published studies. We used spatial and statistical modeling techniques to analyze and forecast fine scale spatial (2000 m grid) and temporal (weekly) patterns of West Nile virus mosquito infection relative to changing weather conditions

Sustainable Landscaping and Sustainability Education on a College Campus: A Case Study in Place-Based, Collaborative Ecosystem Science.

Sustainability education on college campuses can leverage interdisciplinary collaborations between facilities services, sustainability offices, environmental studies researchers, and students to provide hands-on opportunities for place-based learning. In an effort led by student researchers that could be replicated in academic practice at other academic institutions, we collaborated across campus groups to improve campus landscaping and turfgrass management. Turfgrass is an ideal cover for high-traffic areas and recreation, but is energy intensive to maintain, inefficient at carbon sequestrati

A nationwide spatiotemporal forecasting model for bacterial gastroenteritis surveillance in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial gastroenteritis is a public health challenge in South Korea, largely driven by foodborne pathogens including Salmonella, Vibrio, enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC), and Campylobacter. While national surveillance systems provide valuable epidemiological data, they primarily rely on retrospective reporting and have limited capacity to anticipate future outbreaks. This limitation highlights the need for predictive approaches that can support timely public health interventions. METHODS: In this study, we constructed a two-stage probabilistic forecasting framework that

Machine learning models identify a distinct urinary metabolomic signature in children with non-systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The current prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in the People's Republic of China (P. R. China) demonstrates geographical heterogeneities, which show that the TB prevalence in the remote areas of Western China is more serious than that in the coastal plain of Eastern China. Although a lot of ecological studies have been applied in the exploration on the regional difference of disease risks, there is still a paucity of ecological studies on TB prevalence in P. R. China. OBJECTIVE: To understand the underlying factors contributing to the regional inequity of TB burden in P. R. China by

Responses of soil carbon storage to tending thinning and rapid prediction based on NIRS-BPNN in larch-birch natural secondary forests.

INTRODUCTION: Heilongjiang Province ranks third in China in forest area, with over half of its forests being natural secondary forests. The province has fertile soil and plays a crucial role in China's forest ecosystem. Nevertheless, historical indiscriminate logging has resulted in degraded forest conditions, reduced productivity, and compromised carbon sequestration capacity. METHODS: This research focused on the larch-birch natural secondary forest in the Greater Khingan Mountains, examining the soil twelve years after thinning. Six thinning treatments (0%, 16.7%, 25.5%, 34.4%, 49.6%, 59.9

Green Voice Behavior in Nursing: The Roles of Organizational Support, Intrinsic Motivation, and Psychological Safety.

BACKGROUND: Coordinated action is needed to combat climate change and environmental damage, and it is important that healthcare be part of that response. Through proactive behaviors such as environmentally responsible communication or "green voice behavior," nurses can effectively support sustainability initiatives. However, empirical evidence on the factors that encourage such behavior remains limited. This study examined the relationship between perceived green organizational support and nurses' green voice behavior, while also testing the mediating role of green intrinsic motivation and the

Inter-annual changes in transboundary air quality from KORUS-AQ 2016 to SIJAQ 2022 campaign periods and assessment of emission reduction strategies in Northeast Asia.

Northeast Asia suffers from high concentrations of particulate matter (PM), prompting nations to actively implement emission reduction policies. This study evaluated the recent inter-annual changes in the chemical transformation and transboundary transport of PM over Northeast Asia, based on both ground and aircraft measurements, as well as WRF-Chem simulations, during two comprehensive campaigns: the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign in 2016 and the Satellite Integrated Joint Monitoring of Air Quality (SIJAQ) campaign in 2022, both conducted around the Korean Peninsula. Development of a Radiation-induced Pulmonary Fibrosis Partial Body Irradiation Model in C57BL/6 Mice.

With the current volatile geopolitical climate, the threat of nuclear assault is high. Exposure to ionizing radiation from either nuclear incidents or radiological accidents often lead to major harmful consequences to human health. Depending on the absorbed dose, the symptoms of the acute radiation syndrome and delayed effects of acute radiation exposure (DEARE) can appear within hours, weeks to months. The lung is a relatively radiosensitive organ with manifestation of radiation pneumonitis as an acute effect, followed by apparent fibrosis in weeks or even months. A recently developed, first-

Mapping and Modelling the Geographical Distribution and Environmental Limits of Podoconiosis in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is assumed to have the highest burden of podoconiosis globally, but the geographical distribution and environmental limits and correlates are yet to be fully investigated. In this paper we use data from a nationwide survey to address these issues. METHODOLOGY: Our analyses are based on data arising from the integrated mapping of podoconiosis and lymphatic filariasis (LF) conducted in 2013, supplemented by data from an earlier mapping of LF in western Ethiopia in 2008-2010. The integrated mapping used woreda (district) health offices' reports of podoconiosis and LF to guid

A spatially explicit metapopulation model and cattle trade analysis suggests key determinants for the recurrent circulation of rift valley Fever virus in a pilot area of madagascar highlands.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that causes high morbidity and mortality in ruminants. In 2008-2009, a RVF outbreak affected the whole Madagascar island, including the Anjozorobe district located in Madagascar highlands. An entomological survey showed the absence of Aedes among the potential RVF virus (RVFV) vector species identified in this area, and an overall low abundance of mosquitoes due to unfavorable climatic conditions during winter. No serological nor virological sign of infection was observed in wild terrestrial mammals of the area, suggesting an absence o

AI-based prediction of dengue incidence using climatic, environmental, and socio-demographic factors: an ensemble random forest approach with agile system development.

BACKGROUND: Dengue transmission in Indonesia is shaped by interacting climatic, environmental, and socio-demographic factors, yet most forecasting systems remain static and vulnerable to data shifts. There is a critical need for adaptive, data-driven early-warning frameworks that integrate multiple predictor domains while preventing methodological biases such as information leakage. This study aimed to develop a Random Forest (RF)-based predictive model embedded within an Agile System Development workflow to forecast monthly dengue case counts in Yogyakarta. METHODS: Monthly dengue case count

Integrating vulnerability and hazard in malaria risk mapping: the elimination context of Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Significant efforts over the past decades have successfully reduced the global burden of malaria. However, progress has stalled since 2015. In low-transmission settings, the traditional distribution of malaria along vector suitability gradients is shifting to a new profile, with the emergence of hotspots where the disease persists. To support elimination in this context, it is essential that malaria risk maps consider not only environmental and climatic factors, but also societal vulnerabilities, in order to identify remaining hotspots and ensure that no contributing factors are ov
