The hemifrontal flap is an efficient way of reconstructing large unilateral defects that involve the hemiforehead. Six patients had their foreheads reconstructed after the excision of neglected tumours in the frontal region. The flap was designed to provide adequate repair of large defects including the periosteum. The width of the flap above the eyebrow is almost equal to the vertical height of the forehead in the midline. Efficient reconstruction of the primary defect including surface and depth was achieved in all patients. There were no complications with the viability of the flap. The hai

OBJECTIVES: To propose our clinical classification of malignant ethmoid tumors and to compare it with the last American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC)-Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (UICC) classification, published in 1997.
DESIGN: Retrospective review.
SETTING: Tertiary cancer facility.
PATIENTS: We evaluated 123 consecutive patients undergoing craniofacial resection for malignant ethmoid tumors involving the anterior skull base. The mean follow-up was 60 months. Fifty-nine patients (48%) presented with recurrent disease after prior therapy. We classified them with a new classific

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The preservation of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) was introduced in total knee arthroplasty to improve the quadriceps efficiency and the range of flexion in stairs. The purpose of this study was to determine if these goals were achieved with the Miller-Galante total knee prothesis and to assess the relation between knee laxity and function.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: We assessed retrospectively the results of 48 consecutive Miller-Galante with PCL retaining. Four patients were excluded: 2 died, 2 lost to follow-up. Forty-four prostheses were evaluated in 38 patients m

BACKGROUND: A bone-anchored limb (BAL) is an alternative to a traditional socket-type prosthesis for people with transfemoral amputation. Early laboratory-based evidence suggests improvement in joint and limb loading mechanics during walking with a BAL compared to socket prosthesis use. However, changes in cumulative joint and limb loading measures, which may be predictive of degenerative joint disease progression, remain unknown.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Do cumulative total limb and hip joint loading during walking change using a BAL for people with unilateral transfemoral amputation, compared to

OBJECTIVE: To compare the femoral and tibial tunnel positions of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using the modified transtibial (MTT) technique and anteromedial (AM) portal technique.
METHODS: Between January 2017 and September 2020, 78 patients with anterior cruciate ligament rupture underwent single-bundle reconstruction with the modified transtibial technique in 39 cases (group MTT) and through anteromedial approach in 39 cases (group AM). There were 25 males and 14 females in group MTT, with an average age of (37.0±2.3) years old; 27 males and 12 females in group AM, with an ave

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary leukemia, also known as myeloid sarcoma, is a rare form of acute myeloid leukemia and often accompanies bone marrow involvement. Myeloid infiltration of the thyroid gland is extremely rare. Here, a unique case in which thyroid cancer tissue was infiltrated with myeloid cells is presented.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of thyroid papillary cancer infiltrated by blastic cells and bilateral breast and axillary myeloid sarcoma in a 30-year-old Caucasian female patient with a history of osteosarcoma and MDS-RAEB2. The patient firstly received 6 cycles of chemother

PURPOSE AND HYPOTHESIS: Both spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis come in second place in the causes of pain among athletes. Treatment options include both conservative management and different operative methods. Athletes and adolescents are groups where the priority is to protect tissues from perioperative damage.
OBJECTIVE: We present our modification of the Buck's, direct pars repair method, which we believe offers maximum protection of tissues. We used the modified surgical method in young, competitive athletes, in whom non-surgical treatment was not effective.
METHOD: Eight pars defects

Moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) in children often happen when there's a sudden blow to the frontal bone, end with long unconscious which can last for hours and progressive cognitive deficits. However, with regard to the influences of moderate TBI during children adulthood, injury-induced alterations of locomotive ability, long-term memory performance, and hippocampal electrophysiological firing changes have not yet been fully identified. In this study, lateral fluid percussion (LFP) method was used to fabricate moderate TBI in motor and somatosensory cortex of the 6-weeks-old mice. The m…

BACKGROUND: In a resource-poor environment such as rural East Africa, expensive medical devices such as computed tomographic (CT) scanners are rare. The CT scanner at the rural Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) in Tanzania therefore offers a unique chance to observe possible differences with urban medical centers in the disease pattern of trauma-related cranial pathologies. The purpose of this study was to compare traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) between a rural and an urban area of Tanzania.
METHODS: HLH has 350 beds and one CT scanner. The urban Aga Khan Hospital is a private hospital with 80 b

OBJECTIVE: Soft tissue reconstruction with a temporoparietal fascial flap (TPFF).
INDICATIONS: Defect coverage with thin, pliable, and well-vascularized tissue. A bilayered TPFF provides a gliding surface in tendon reconstruction. Further options include TPFF harvest with overlying skin or subjacent bone for composite tissue reconstruction or the application as a sensate local fascial flap. Maximum defect dimensions: 17 × 14 cm.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Absolute: prior injury to the flap or flap pedicle, temporal arteritis, Moyamoya syndrome, defects with volume deficit. Relative: alopecia along t

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: To enhance understanding of the nature and pathogenesis of scapular fractures in racehorses.
HYPOTHESIS: Scapular fractures in racehorses have a consistent configuration related to sites of pre-existing stress modelling and remodelling.
METHODS: Fractured and intact scapulae collected post mortem were examined visually and with computed tomography (CT). Scapular fracture configuration, bone modelling changes and standardised CT morphometry and density measurements were recorded. Statistical comparisons were made between fractured, nonfractured contralateral and

The technical approach for anterior skull base tumors has progressed considerably during the last decade. In the classical combined craniofacial resection (CFR) technique, anterior skull base lesions have been approached through bi-frontal craniotomy coupled with Weber-Ferguson and related modifications incisions. The purpose of this work is to present our experience with the subcranial approach for treatment of anterior skull base tumors. During the years 1994-2002, 64 patients underwent 72 procedures of anterior skull base tumor resection via the subcranial approach. The ages of the patients

BACKGROUND: Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL) is a rare subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that predominantly affects young children. The RBM15::MRTFA fusion gene is a recurrent genetic alteration in pediatric non-Down syndrome associated AMKL (n-DS-AMKL). Myeloid sarcoma (MS), an extramedullary solid tumor of immature myeloid cells, can be a presenting feature of AML and poses significant diagnostic challenges, often leading to initial misdiagnosis. BACKGROUND: Orbital compression syndrome (OCS) is a rare, sight-threatening complication of sickle cell disease (SCD), caused by vaso-occlusive infarction of orbital bone marrow with subperiosteal hematoma formation. Its presentation overlaps with orbital cellulitis and severe malaria, creating diagnostic uncertainty in resource-limited humanitarian settings.
