Effect of a new resistance training method on the metaboreflex in cardiac rehabilitation patients: a randomized controlled trial.

Patients with cardiac disease exhibit exaggerated sympathoexcitation, pressor, and ventilatory responses to muscle metaboreflex activation (MMA). However, the effects of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) and especially resistance training (RT) modalities on MMA are not well known. This study investigated how CR impacts MMA in such patients, specifically examining the effects of two different resistance training (RT) protocols following 12 weeks of CR. In addition to endurance exercises, 32 patients were randomized into either a 3/7 RT modality (comprising 5 sets of 3-7 repetitions) or a control (CTR

Physiotherapy management focusing on proprioceptive impairment in a patient with gait and balance impairments following stroke: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive impairment contributes to gait and balance impairments in patients with stroke. Diagnosis functional impairments and evaluation treatment efficacy require quantitative proprioception assessment. However, proprioception assessment has remained limited to ordinal scale measurement, with a lack of ratio scale measurements. PURPOSE: This case report describes a physiotherapy management program focusing on proprioceptive impairment in patients with stroke using quantitative tests such as Threshold to Detect Passive Motion (TDPM) and Joint Position Sense (JPS). CASE DESC

Comparison of migration rates between traditional and tunneled adductor canal block catheters: a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Total knee arthroplasty is associated with significant postoperative pain. Continuous adductor canal blocks via an inserted adductor canal catheter are effective analgesia interventions with the advantage of decreasing quadriceps weakness and the potential of extending the analgesic effect. The classical adductor canal catheter insertion technique may have a high likelihood of catheter dislodgement out of the canal. The interfascial plane between the sartorius muscle and femoral artery (ISAFE) approach has the potential of decreasing the adductor canal catheter migration. The pur

Impact of Surgical Timing on Functional Outcomes after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Objectives: Although acute anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is often avoided because of postoperative joint stiffness, delayed ACLR can lead to a longer recovery time and can have a negative impact on physical function due to detraining. This study aimed to determine the effects of acute ACLR on postoperative outcomes, including muscle strength, performance, and return to sports. Methods: A total of 110 patients who underwent anatomical ACLR using hamstring autografts were included in this study and were divided into three groups: acute (ACLR performed within 2 weeks after ACL

Comparison of Analgesic Efficacy between Ultrasound-guided Supra-inguinal Fascia Iliaca Block and Pericapsular Nerve Group Block following Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: The effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block versus suprainguinal fascia iliaca block (SFIB) for pain relief after hi … he groups (P>0.05). Better cutaneous sensory perception in the hip region and 12-hour postoperative quadriceps muscle strength at 90° were observed in the PENG group compared with the SFIB group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Compared to SFIB, the addition of PENG block to multimodal analgesia did not reduce fentanyl consumption or pain scores after posterior approach THA.

Comparative analysis of gait: Similar coronal but different sagittal effects between closing-wedge and opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: High tibial osteotomy is an established surgical option for medial compartment osteoarthritis of the knee with varus alignment. … plane and a higher knee flexion moment were observed in the open wedge osteotomy group, suggesting quadriceps muscle avoidance. However, no differences in clinical scores or the short-term occurrence of patellofemoral arthritis were noted between the two surgical techniques.

Resveratrol Decreases Oxidative Stress by Restoring Mitophagy and Improves the Pathophysiology of Dystrophin-Deficient mdx Mice.

We previously showed that treatment with resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene), an activator of the NAD+-dependent deacetylase SIRT1 at 4 g/kg food for 32 weeks, significantly decreased the muscular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels and ameliorated the pathology of mdx mice, an animal model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Here, we treated mdx mice with various doses of resveratrol (0.04, 0.4, and 4 g/kg food) for 56 weeks and examined the effects on serum creatine kinase levels and physical activities. Because resveratrol promotes autophagy, we also investigated whether autop

Non-invasive vagus nerve stimulation reduces blood-brain barrier disruption in a rat model of ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) significantly reduces infarct volume in rat models of cerebral ischemia, but the mechanism of this protective effect remains open. HYPOTHESIS: This study tested the hypothesis that non-invasive VNS (nVNS), during transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), protects the blood-brain barrier (BBB), leading to reduced infarct size in ischemic brain. METHODS: Spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHRs) were subjected to a 90 min MCAO. nVNS treated rats received 5 stimulations (duration: 2 min; every 10 min) on the skin overlying the cervical vagus nerve i

Combining intra-dialytic exercise and nutritional supplementation in malnourished older haemodialysis patients: Towards better quality of life and autonomy.

Protein-energy wasting (PEW), defined as a loss of body protein mass and fuel reserves, is a powerful predictor of adverse outcomes in haemodialysis (HD) patients. Robust arguments suggest that intra-dialytic exercise, combined with oral/parenteral nutrition, enhances the effect of nutritional interventions in HD patients. This pilot randomized controlled trial investigated the feasibility and the effects of a 6 month intra-dialytic cycling program combined to a nutritional support on PEW, physical functioning (gait, balance, muscle strength) and quality of life (QoL) in older HD patients (mea

Skeletal muscle mitochondrial function is associated with longitudinal growth velocity in children and adolescents.

CONTEXT: Periods of rapid growth require an increase in energy use and substrate formation. Mitochondrial function contributes to each of these and therefore may play a role in longitudinal growth. METHODS: Twenty-nine children and adolescents of ages 8-15 yr were enrolled in a comprehensive longitudinal assessment of glucose homeostasis and mitochondrial function. Fasting laboratory studies and an estimate of mitochondrial function (as assessed by the time to recovery of phosphocreatine (PCr) concentration after submaximal quadriceps extension/flexion exercise using (31)P magnetic resonance
