BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The triplet of airway infection, inflammation and bronchial wall destruction associated with excessive matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) release and imbalance of tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) is implicated in bronchiectasis. We sought to determine the associations between sputum MMP (MMP-8, MMP-9) and TIMP-1 and the severity of bronchiectasis; the utility of MMP in predicting risks of future bronchiectasis exacerbations (BE); and the changes in MMP levels during BE.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Human genetic disorders associated with multiple unstable repeats resulting in long DNA expansions are difficult to identify by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in routine molecular testing, and therefore require time-consuming hybridisation. To improve and expedite the diagnostic methods for progressive myoclonus epilepsy (EPM1), myotonic dystrophy 2 (DM2) and spinocerebellar ataxia 8 (SCA8) caused by dynamic mutations, we adapted a repeat primed PCR (RP-PCR) assay which was previously developed for testing of other triplet repeat disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) is commonly used as treatment of first choice in couples with unexplained subfertility. This treatment should only be applied when there is a realistic increase in chance of pregnancy, particularly because it carries the increased risk of multiple pregnancies. In Huntington's disease (HD), as in the rest of CAG triplet-repeat disorders, the expanded polyglutamine (polyQ)-containing proteins form intraneuronal fibrillar aggregates that are gathered into inclusion bodies (IBs). OBJECTIVE: To study maternal and perinatal outcomes in healthy women aged 50 years and older.
METHOD: This study was of 59 clinical pregnancies, of which 10 ended in first trimester spontaneous miscarriage (and were excluded from further studies) and 58 live births. This retrospective review of 58 live births in 49 essentially healthy women (mean [SE] age, [52+/-2.5] years; range 50-55 years), with no chronic medical conditions (of which 28 were primigravids).
