Angiostrongyliasis is a food-borne parasitic disease caused by the nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis that can lead to eosinophilic meningitis (EM) or meningoencephalitis in humans. Angiostrongylus cantonensis is prevalent in the Pacific Islands. In recent years, a large number of outbreaks and severe cases have occurred. Several species of mollusk, such as snails and slugs, act as intermediate and paratenic hosts of A. cantonensis. In this study, two cases of EM were found to have been caused by infection with A. cantonensis due to consumption of raw centipedes. To survey the A. cantonensis

A case of pancreatitis secondary to a hepatic hydatid cyst is illustrated together with its preoperative imaging and intraoperative appearance. Cystobiliary communication is a common complication of large hydatid cysts, and episodes of recurrent pancreatitis resulting from passage of cyst contents down the biliary tract are rarely described. The clinical manifestations, diagnostic workup, and surgical management options of echinococcal-related pancreatitis are discussed, and a review of the literature is provided.

Human trichinellosis is a potentially severe parasitic disease occurring after ingestion of undercooked meat infected with Trichinella sp. larvae. We report the case of a patient who ate an undercooked bear meat hunted in Canada; he presented with the usual symptoms of trichinellosis (i.e, facial oedema, myalgias and fever) complicated with an asymptomatic myocarditis. Myocarditis is a rare, but potentially lethal complication of trichinellosis. Myocarditis should be screened systematically even when specific symptoms are missing; dosage of troponin serum is a simple and reliable mean for such

This case report highlights an unusual osseous spinal presentation of a well described disease, hydatidosis. A 59-year-old woman presented with increasing back pain and bilateral radiculopathy. Examination disclosed symptoms of spinal stenosis and urinary incontinence. Radiographs showed an expansive lytic lesion affecting the pelvic bones with destruction of the bone cortex. Laboratory analyses were performed and the patient underwent CT and MRI studies. Serology for Echinococcus was positive. When assessing sciatica, low back pain or lower limb weakness the pelvic cavity should be examined f

A 32-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of severe cough. Examination of peripheral blood showed a marked increase in eosinophils. Chest CT demonstrated multiple ground glass opacities in both lungs. Bronchoalveolar lavage showed abundant eosinophils. Abdominal CT demonstrated multiple low attenuation areas in the liver. Liver biopsy with ultrasonography revealed severe eosinophil infiltrations around the portal veins. Serologically, a multi-dot enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (DOT-ELISA) and ELISA inhibition test using microtiter plates were positive for Ascaris suum. Thus, visc

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection has serious deleterious effects on the health of goats, and costs Australian producers $2.5 million annually (Lane et al., 2015). Anthelmintic drugs are heavily relied upon for control of these parasites; however, anthelmintic resistance (AR) has become a major constraint for producers. This study assessed resistance to a range of registered and off-label anthelmintic treatments using faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) and compared four methods of FECRT analysis. Twelve meat goat properties in southern Queensland (n = 6) and New South Wales (n =

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is a rare but potentially fatal zoonotic disease that primarily affects the liver, while extrahepatic involvement usually indicates advanced disease and poor prognosis. Vertebral and pulmonary AE may closely mimic tuberculosis (TB), particularly in TB-endemic regions, leading to substantial diagnostic challenges. We report a case of late vertebral and pulmonary AE after previous hepatic hydatid surgery that was initially misdiagnosed as spinal and disseminated pulmonary TB.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Tibetan woman from a nomadic family presented

INTRODUCTION: Dihydroartemisinin (DHA) demonstrates potent anti-echinococcal activity. However, its clinical application is constrained by non-specific biodistribution and low bioavailability. To overcome these limitations and enhance hepatic targeting, the DHA was encapsulated in poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles, and using sodium taurocholate (STC) as the surface modifier, a novel composite nanoparticle designated as DHA-STC-PLGA nanoparticles (DSP nanoparticles).
METHODS: The formulation was optimized using response surface methodology, and its targeting efficiency was co

Lymphatic filariasis (LF), also commonly known as elephantiasis, is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by filarial parasites. The disease is transmitted via a bite from infected mosquitoes. The bites of these infected mosquitoes deposit filarial parasites, Wuchereria or Brugia, whose predilection site is the lymphatic system. The damage to the lymph system causes swelling in the legs, arms, and genitalia. A mapping survey conducted between 2003 and 2011 determined LF as being endemic in Zambia in 96 out of 116 districts. Elimination of LF is known to be possible by stopping the spread o
