Worldwide hotspots and ecological drivers of canine Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato: Space-time scan statistics and Maxent modelling from a systematic evidence base.

Cystic echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato remains a major One Health concern. In this study, we conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review (Web of Science, 2005-2025) and compiled a georeferenced dataset of canine E. granulosus s.l. infections derived from published field studies. After data curation and harmonization, 169 location-year records (representing 159 unique spatial locations in SaTScan) were included in the space-time analysis. Space-time cluster detection using SaTScan (Bernoulli model; annual resolution) identified 14 clusters, of which 13 were statistic

GLOWORM-META: modelling gastrointestinal nematode metapopulation dynamics to inform cattle biosecurity research.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasite infections in grazing livestock cause significant disease, and are responsible for estimated annual losses of over €1.8 billion in Europe alone. The management of GINs in cattle is threatened by anthelmintic drug resistance (AR). Immediate action is needed to slow the progression of AR in cattle GINs and avoid the increasingly common scenario of multiple drug resistance seen in sheep. Although AR can arise independently on multiple farms, it may also be spread between holdings via purchased cattle. Therefore, effective biosecurity measures on cattle ent

Understanding transmission risk and predicting environmental suitability for Mayaro Virus in Central and South America.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is a mosquito-borne Alphavirus that is widespread in South America. MAYV infection often presents with non-specific febrile symptoms but may progress to debilitating chronic arthritis or arthralgia. Despite the pandemic threat of MAYV, its true distribution remains unknown. The objective of this study was to clarify the geographic distribution of MAYV using an established risk mapping framework. This consisted of generating evidence consensus scores for MAYV presence, modeling the potential distribution of MAYV in select countries across Central and South America, and estim

Temperature impacts the environmental suitability for malaria transmission by Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles stephensi.

Extrinsic environmental factors influence the spatiotemporal dynamics of many organisms, including insects that transmit the pathogens responsible for vector-borne diseases (VBDs). Temperature is an especially important constraint on the fitness of a wide variety of ectothermic insects. A mechanistic understanding of how temperature impacts traits of ectotherms, and thus the distribution of ectotherms and vector-borne infections, is key to predicting the consequences of climate change on transmission of VBDs like malaria. However, the response of transmission to temperature and other drivers i

Thermal and Hydrological Controls on Soil Respiration and Subsurface Gas Transport in Arctic Tundra Ecosystems.

Arctic tundra ecosystems have experienced marked changes in temperature and precipitation patterns in recent decades. The impact of these changes on the physical and biogeochemical mechanisms governing soil respiration and CO2 emissions remains poorly understood. We investigate how seasonal thermo-hydrological dynamics impact soil freezing/thawing, soil respiration, and O2 and CO2 transport and exchange in a typical well-drained Arctic tundra ecosystem by combining laboratory experiments and field observations with process-based modeling. Our results demonstrate that low temperatures constrain

Microclimatic effects on activity patterns in a montane chimpanzee population.

Climatic variation can shape primate activity budgets by altering the energetic and thermoregulatory costs of feeding, resting, locomotion and social behaviour. However, little is known about how chimpanzees that inhabit cool, wet montane forests adjust their activity in response to fine-scale meteorological conditions. We examined the effects of temperature, absolute humidity (water vapour pressure (WVP)), wind speed and rainfall on eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in Nyungwe National Park, Rwanda, one of the highest-elevation chimpanzee habitats. From March 2024 to Februa

Hantaviruses as Emerging Zoonotic Pathogens: Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Therapeutics, vaccine, and Pathogenesis.

Hantaviruses are globally distributed zoonotic pathogens belonging to the family Hantaviridae and are responsible for two major human diseases, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS). Despite substantial progress in hantavirus research, important challenges remain in understanding the interactions among viral evolution, reservoir ecology, environmental change, transmission dynamics, and host immunopathology. This review provides an integrated One Health perspective that connects molecular virology and host-virus interactions with transmissio

Dual-constraint spatial planning unlocks proactive blue carbon expansion across China's coastlines.

Coastal blue carbon ecosystems-mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses-provide vital climate mitigation benefits, placing them at the forefront of the global 30×30 conservation agenda. Maximizing these benefits across complex coastal transition zones requires spatial frameworks that reconcile intrinsic ecological suitability with human threats. However, existing conservation assessments in intertidal habitats remain largely reactive, fragmented, and blind to cumulative land-sea stressors and future expansion potential. Here we show that a dual-constraint spatial planning framework coupling hab

Application Prospects of Alginate Oligosaccharides in Regulating Maize Stress Tolerance: A Review.

Maize (Zea mays L.) plays an irreplaceable role in food, feed, and energy security. However, abiotic stresses, including drought, high temperature, salinity, and waterlogging, driven by climate warming, cause yield losses of 20-30% of global maize production every year, posing a serious threat to global food security and human development. Traditional approaches such as genetic improvement, agronomic optimization, and chemical regulation struggle to address the multiple stresses affecting maize. Alginate oligosaccharides (AOSs)-linear oligosaccharides with degrees of polymerization of 2-20-can

Temporal phenotypic responses of early vegetative maize to heat, drought, and combined stresses.

Understanding how maize responds to heat, drought, and the combination of stresses is essential for developing resilient cultivars for future climates. We characterized temporal phenotypic responses of 47 genetically diverse Zea mays inbred lines grown under control, drought, heat, and combined drought-heat stresses for 13 days in a high-throughput phenotyping platform. Plant area was modeled over time using Bayesian hierarchical growth analysis. Treatment explained the largest proportion of phenotypic variance, while genotype × treatment interaction accounted for up to 35% of color variation.

The impact of port production on mangrove ecological vulnerability: Evidence from mainland China.

Rapid port expansion has reshaped coastal socioeconomic systems while intensifying pressures on mangrove ecosystems, and the mechanisms through which port activities influence mangrove ecological vulnerability (MEV) remain insufficiently understood. Using panel data from 25 port cities in mainland China from 2003 to 2023, this study integrates the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) vulnerability framework with the Sensitivity-Resilience-Pressure (SRP) model to construct a multidimensional MEV index, and applies XGBoost-SHAP to identify dominant port-production drivers, nonlinear

Depth-Resolved Metagenomics Reveals Nitrate- and Sulfate-Mediated Arsenic Transformation in Lake Tosen, a Stratified Saline Lake on the Tibetan Plateau.

High-altitude saline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau host some of the world's most arsenic-rich waters, yet controls on arsenic (As) transformation remain poorly resolved. By integrating depth-resolved geochemistry with metagenomic profiling in Lake Tosen, we identified a redox framework for As cycling that is not fully explained by the Fe-centric model derived from groundwater and freshwater. In summer, oxic-suboxic-anoxic stratification supported three distinct pathways: (i) oxic waters exhibited a microbial detoxification-oxidation loop sustaining As(V) dominance; (ii) suboxic waters were asso

Participatory Approaches to Risk Assessment Across One Health Disciplines: A Scoping Review.

Risk assessments for emerging infectious disease threats are often conducted independently of affected communities. Participatory approaches to risk assessment present an opportunity to integrate community knowledge early in the risk-based decisionmaking process. We conducted a scoping review to understand the breadth of evidence from human, animal, and environmental health disciplines for integrating community participation in steps of the risk assessment process. A systematic literature search in PubMed, Scopus, Ei Compendex, Embase, Web of Science, and Global Health Database identified 4993

The trend and potential factors of the longitudinal antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coli strains in recent decades worldwide.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a critical threat to global public health in the 21st century. Escherichia coli (E. coli), as a major bacterial pathogen, is widely distributed in humans, animals, and the environment, is not only a common pathogen causing urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and infectious diarrhea, but also one of the main pathogens leading to the sharp increase of multi-drug resistant strains. Therefore, understanding the long-term changing patterns of drug resistance in E. coli and exploring the key driving factors of drug resistance development are of vital importance

Shrub and forest proximity and cattle farming drive tick (Acari: Ixodidae) exposure risk in the SFTS endemic region of Chongqing, China.

Tick distribution in China has significantly expanded with urbanization and climate change. Chongqing, in southwestern China, faces a significant risk of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS), which is transmitted primarily by ticks, but targeted prevention efforts are challenging due to unclear exposure pathways. This study combined generalized linear model (GLM), Bayesian networks, and Bayesian multivariate GLM to assess environmental, agricultural, and socioeconomic drivers of tick exposure in southwestern China. Direct tick exposure risks primarily arose from proximity to shru

Valorization of animal husbandry waste into slow-release phosphorus fertilizers through pyrolysis.

Intensive animal husbandry generates substantial farming sludge from on-site wastewater treatment as primary solid waste instead of manure. This study valorized farming sludge into slow-release phosphorus (P) fertilizers through pyrolysis. The P transformation upon pyrolysis was examined using sequential P extraction and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results revealed the transformation of labile P (e.g., water-extractable P and organic phosphate) to metal-P (e.g., Al-P and Ca-P) during pyrolysis, depending on the metal profile of feedstock and pyrolysis temperature. Three-mo
