A 48-year-old man with a history of hypertension, peripheral vascular disease and a 50-pack-year history of smoking presented with new onset vertigo, tinnitus, diplopia and ataxia in January 1978. CT scan showed a radiolucent defect in the left cerebellar hemisphere with a possible mural nodule. In ensuing months, he experienced worsening symptoms with a corresponding increase in lesion size on re-imaging. Months later, a left posterior fossa craniotomy was performed and revealed a single cystic lesion containing copious amounts of straw-colored fluid and a single mural nodule in the inferior

We report a rare case of a 32-year-old male with live extralymphatic filarial infestation presenting as a facial subcutaneous soft-tissue swelling. To the best of our knowledge these imaging findings have not been previously reported in the head and neck region in the existing English language literature. Real-time high-resolution ultrasonography revealed a solitary well-defined subcutaneous cystic lesion over the right zygomatic arch. It showed multiple linear, echogenic, undulating structures exhibiting a persistent twirling motion during the examination. This typical ultrasonographic appear

BACKGROUND: Our purpose was to correlate the imaging findings of small cystic pancreatic lesions to the incidence of growth on follow-up imaging and their pathologic diagnoses.
METHODS: CT images for 159 patients with cystic pancreatic lesions were retrospectively evaluated and lesions were assessed for size, number, connection to the main pancreatic duct (MPD), MPD dilatation, and any presence of loculation, wall irregularity, thick septations, or solid components. A total of 86 patients had follow-up imaging with time periods of less than 6 months (n = 21), 6-12 months (n = 22), 1-2 years (

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Syringomyelia in association with the Dandy-Walker complex is rare and only 17 cases have been reported, mostly as autopsy findings or incidental reports in series for other conditions. We present a further case report and discuss the possible pathogenetic mechanisms of syrinx formation in the presence of the Dandy-Walker complex. We emphasize the role of foramen magnum obstruction and alteration in cerebrospinal fluid flow dynamics in syrinx formation. The therapeutic importance of disimpaction of the foramen magnum is stressed.

This paper reports on a patient who was treated by percutaneous aspiration, instillation of a sclerosant (polidocanol) and cystogastric drainage for a post-acute pancreatic pseudocyst. Five weeks after admission to hospital for the first episode of an acute necrotizing pancreatitis, the 60-year-old man underwent a percutaneous, ultrasound-guided puncture and aspiration of a voluminous pancreatic pseudocyst. Ten days later, recurrent fluid collection led to a second puncture, combined with the injection of polidocanol (15 ml; 1%) into the cyst cavity. Since this treatment failed, a percutaneous

We studied the serodiagnosis of human hydatid disease using the dot-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (dot-ELISA) and the indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA). Hydatid cyst fluid antigens from sheep were highly reactive against a battery of positive human sera. Moose-derived antigen was less reactive, whereas human- and camel-derived antigens showed nonspecific false-positive reactions. Sensitivity of the Dot-ELISA was 96% using sheep-derived antigen and 45 human sera from 43 surgically proven cases of hydatidosis disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus, E. multilocularis and E. vogeli. BACKGROUND: Fat is commonly used for preventing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage during endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETSS). However, fat is soft, slippery, and sometimes not easy to handle. The present study aimed to examine the efficacy of our Surgicel® wrapping method, which allows for better fat handling, in preventing the occurrence of CSF leakage among patients undergoing ETSS.
METHODS: We used fat tissues removed from the abdomen. The fat was cut with scissors into pieces that were approximately 5 mm in size. Surgicel® was also cut into 2.5 cm2. The fat tissues were encased with

Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are a congenital anomaly, forming fluid-filled sacs in the bronchial tree during fetal development, and are relatively rare in adults. Patients with large BCs in the mediastinum presenting with severe tracheal compression pose a significant challenge to anesthesiologists. The confined and narrow space of the mediastinum exacerbates the compression effect on surrounding structures, leading to potential respiratory or cardiovascular collapse during anesthesia and postoperatively. Herein, we report the stepwise anesthetic management of a patient with a BC in the paratrach

This study reviews recent progress in the surgical treatment of Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) and Sellar region meningiomas, based on findings from three key studies. RCCs are benign, fluid-filled remnants from pituitary gland development that are usually asymptomatic and found by chance. However, surgical intervention is needed when they become symptomatic or increase in size. Research by Stefan Linsler et al. and others examines various surgical methods, including transcranial keyhole and transsphenoidal techniques for RCCs, and endoscopic endonasal and supraorbital keyhole approaches for Sell

BACKGROUND: Intracranial arachnoid cysts (ACs) are developmental anomalies usually filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), rarely resolving throughout life. Here, we present a case of an AC with intracystic hemorrhage and subdural hematoma (SDH) that developed after a minor head injury before gradually disappearing. Neuroimaging demonstrated specific changes from hematoma formation to AC disappearance over time. The mechanisms of this condition are discussed based on imaging data.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a head injury caused by a traffic accident.

BACKGROUND: Amoebiasis, an infectious disease caused by the parasitic protozoan E. histolytica, is easily misdiagnosed due to its declining incidence and atypical symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old male presented to the hospital with dyspnea and inability to lie flat. Imaging studies indicated a large amount of pleural effusion on the right side and multiple huge cysts in the liver. The patient underwent liver tumor resection surgery at another hospital due to suspected malignancy, but no evidence of relevant malignant tumors was found in the pathological examination. Subsequently, we

BACKGROUND Acanthamoeba are free-living amoebae with potential to infect immunocompromised hosts. The mortality rate of granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE) due to Acanthamoeba exceeds 90% and there are currently no reports of survival of this infection in recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplant. CASE REPORT We report herein the case of a 32-year-old man presenting to our service with abrupt neurological deterioration and seizures 5 months after allogeneic stem cell transplantation for Hodgkin lymphoma. Clinical and imaging findings were non-specific at presentation. Multiple circu

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) are commonly found in the liver and lungs of affected hosts. The treatment approach is usually surgical, or giving drugs in conjunction before surgery to kill protoscolices, to avoid anaphylactic shock from leakage of hydatid fluid into the peritoneum and to decrease opportunities for recurrences. The present study was to evaluate the in vitro scolicidal efficacy of hydroalcoholic extract of Punica granatum peel and Nigella sativa, on the protoscolices of CE that collected from the lungs of infected camels. Different concentrations of extracts with different exposure

Endometriosis in men is extremely rare with only a few cases reported in the English literature. Different theories have been proposed as to its origin. In this article, we describe the clinicopathologic features of 2 cases of endometriosis occurring in male patients. The patients' ages were 50 and 43 years, and sizes were 2 and 5.2 cm, respectively. No significant chemical or hormonal exposure was identified. Both patients presented with a testicular mass. Grossly, both lesions were cystic and contained hemorrhagic fluid. Microscopic examination revealed cysts and occasional glands lined by l

A variety of entities may mimic drainable abscesses. This can lead to misdiagnosis of these entities, unnecessary percutaneous placement of a pigtail drainage catheter, other complications, and delay in appropriate treatment of the patient. Types of entities that may mimic drainable abscesses include neoplasms (lymphoma, gallbladder cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumor, ovarian cancer, mesenteric fibromatosis, ruptured mature cystic teratoma, recurrent malignancy in a surgical bed), ischemia/infarction (liquefactive infarction of the spleen, infarcted splenule), diverticula (calyceal, Meckel

The protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most important food-related pathogens worldwide. Besides contact to oocysts or ingestion of tissue cysts mainly by consumption of raw or undercooked meat from infected animals, raw milk is considered to be a risk factor and possible route of transmission for tachyzoites. This stage of the parasite is usually very sensitive to acidic pH and, therefore, considered unlikely to survive stomach passage. However, tachyzoites were shown to survive for several days in milk and there are also reports on transmission of toxoplasmosis via milk. Thus,
