Differential expression of protein tyrosine kinase genes during microglial activation.

Protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) activity is abundant in microglia, but the PTKs that participate in their activation have not been identified. For these studies, we used three paradigms to characterize PTK expression during microglial activation: resting and activated microglia were bulk fractionated from the adult brain, cultured newborn microglia were treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to model the transition from activated toward phagocytic microglia, and PTK expression was examined in activated microglia in situ after facial nerve axotomy. Two PCR-based strategies were used to show that 2

[Management of intracanalicular acoustic neurinoma].

Between 1991 and 1996, 35 patients had an intracanalicular tumor: 26 patients were operated via middle cranial fossa approach (MFA: 23 cases) or translabyrinthine approach (TL: 3 cases), 9 cases were supervised by audiovestibular testing and MRI. For the operated patients through MFA the functional hearing (pure tone loss < 50 dB and 100% vocal discrimination) was preserved in 47.8% of cases, facial function was grade I and II in 83% of cases and grade III in 17% of cases. One recurrence was noted and reoperated by TL. For the TL operated patients, the postoperative facial function was normal

Salivary duct carcinoma: Clinicopathologic features, morphologic spectrum, and somatic mutations.

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of salivary duct carcinoma requires a high index of suspicion and clinicopathologic correlation. Hallmark genetic changes that may provide novel therapeutic options are being explored. METHODS: One hundred ninety salivary gland malignancies at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (from 1989-2014) were reviewed. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) and androgen receptor status were determined along with multigene profiling. RESULTS: Twenty-three salivary duct carcinomas were identified, predominantly in men in their fifth to ninth decades of life. Facial nerv

A Genome-Wide Association Study Identifies the Skin Color Genes IRF4, MC1R, ASIP, and BNC2 Influencing Facial Pigmented Spots.

Facial pigmented spots are a common skin aging feature, but genetic predisposition has yet to be thoroughly investigated. We conducted a genome-wide association study for pigmented spots in 2,844 Dutch Europeans from the Rotterdam Study (mean age: 66.9±8.0 years; 47% male). Using semi-automated image analysis of high-resolution digital facial photographs, facial pigmented spots were quantified as the percentage of affected skin area (mean women: 2.0% ±0.9, men: 0.9% ±0.6). We identified genome-wide significant association with pigmented spots at three genetic loci: IRF4 (rs12203592, P=1.8 × 10

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection with cutaneous and sinus lymphoproliferation in a white female patient with 25 years' follow-up: an original case report.

Chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection (CAEBV) is characterized by chronic infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms associated with very high viral load, as assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We present an unusual case in a French woman who was followed up over 25 years with cutaneous and sinus lymphoproliferation. This white woman presented with a long history of recurrent cutaneous necrotic papules of the skin, which started during childhood and healed spontaneously with depressed scars. The lesions spread to the left maxillary sinus and were associated with hepatomegaly

Infantile onset neurofibromatosis type 2 presenting with peripheral facial palsy, skin patches, retinal hamartoma and foot drop.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) has long been regarded as an adult onset disease. However, it is now known that many NF2 patients present clinical signs and symptoms in early childhood. We here report an illustrative case of a male adolescent with an infantile onset clinical symptomatology. PATIENT: A 15-year-old male adolescent presented with a history of congenital peripheral facial palsy, amblyopia, a retinal "membrane", and weakness of the left lower limb. Clinical, electrophysiological, radiological, and molecular studies of the patient are shown. A peripheral axonal neuropath

Anterior skull base reconstruction with a galeal-pericranial flap.

Excision of neoplasm and trauma involving the anterior cranial base may often result in communication between the intracranial and extracranial compartments. Many techniques have been proposed to obtain a watertight separation. We report our 5 years of experience in the management of anterior skull base defects using a galeal-pericranial flap. Between January 2001 and April 2006, 22 patients were treated for a cranial base reconstruction at the University of Messina. Five of them presented with persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak after previous craniofacial trauma. Ten underwent a combin

Glomus jugulare tumors with intracranial extension.

Glomus tumors provide unique surgical challenges for both tumor resection and defect reconstruction. Tumors with intracranial extension compound these challenges. Surgical techniques have evolved, and now, with a multidisciplinary team, single-stage surgeries are the standard. In this paper the authors will report the results of the Otology Group protocol for surgical management of glomus tumors with intracranial extension. Particular attention will be paid to prevention of cerebrospinal fluid leaks with the use of vascularized tissue for defect reconstruction.

Two-phase orthodontic treatment of a complex malocclusion: giving up efficiency in favor of effectiveness, quality of life, and functional rehabilitation?

The interceptive orthodontic treatment of patients with complex dentofacial abnormalities is frequently inefficient and produces less than ideal outcomes. Therefore, postponing therapy to a single-phase surgical-orthodontic approach might be considered a reasonable option. However, other relevant aspects of the patient's quality of life, such as possible psychosocial problems and functional impairments, should also be considered before deciding whether to intercept a severe dentofacial malocclusion while the patient is still growing, or wait and treat later. This case report describes the nons

Gamma Knife radiosurgery for larger-volume vestibular schwannomas. Clinical article.

OBJECT: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is an important management option for patients with small- and medium-sized vestibular schwannomas. To assess the potential role of SRS in larger tumors, the authors reviewed their recent experience. METHODS: Between 1994 and 2008, 65 patients with vestibular schwannomas between 3 and 4 cm in one extracanalicular maximum diameter (median tumor volume 9 ml) underwent Gamma Knife surgery. Seventeen patients (26%) had previously undergone resection. RESULTS: The median follow-up duration was 36 months (range 1-146 months). At the first planned imaging fol
