Optical coherence tomography angiography analysis in patients with intracranial hypertension.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence on peripapillary microvasculature in intracranial hypertension (IH) after the regression of papilledema is still scarce. The aim of this preliminary study was to determine the association between structural changes in the optic nerve and the retina and peripapillary microvasculature in patients with IIH. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study. The study included 39 eyes of 21 patients with IIH. Treatment for IIH and history of obesity were registered from each patient. Moreover, OCT analysis including retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and ganglion cell-inn

Neuropathology and Inflammatory Cell Characterization in 10 Autoptic COVID-19 Brains.

COVID-19 presents with a wide range of clinical neurological manifestations. It has been recognized that SARS-CoV-2 infection affects both the central and peripheral nervous system, leading to smell and taste disturbances; acute ischemic and hemorrhagic cerebrovascular disease; encephalopathies and seizures; and causes most surviving patients to have long lasting neurological symptoms. Despite this, typical neuropathological features associated with the infection have still not been identified. Studies of post-mortem examinations of the cerebral cortex are obtained with difficulty due to labor

CircFUNDC1 knockdown alleviates oxygen-glucose deprivation-induced human brain microvascular endothelial cell injuries by inhibiting PTEN via miR-375.

BACKGROUND: The maintenance of human brain microvascular endothelial cell (HBMEC) function is crucial to improve the outcomes of ischemic stroke (IS). Emerging evidence shows that circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in IS progression. This study aimed to investigate the role of circRNA FUN14 domain containing 1 (circFUNDC1) in oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD)-treated HBMECs. METHODS: The expression of circFUNDC1, miR-375 and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) mRNA was detected by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Cell viability, apoptosis, migration and angiogenesis were determined by C

RBM3 Increases Cell Survival but Disrupts Tight Junction of Microvascular Endothelial Cells in Acute Lung Injury.

BACKGROUND: RNA-binding motif protein 3 (RBM3) is an important cold shock protein, which also responds to hypothermia or hypoxia. RBM3 is involved into multiple physiologic processes, such as promoting cell survival. However, its expression and function in acute lung injury (ALI) have not been reported. METHODS: A mouse ALI model was established by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) treatment. The RBM3 and cold inducible RNA-binding protein mRNA levels were examined by RT-qPCR, and MMP9 mRNA stability was determined by actinomycin D assay. RBM3 and MMP9 mRNA was tested by RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP

Structural and microvascular changes of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer in Von Hippel-Lindau disease: an OCT and OCT angiography study.

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an autosomal dominant genetic disease caused by VHL gene mutation. Retinal hemangioblastomas (RH) are vascularized tumors and represent the main ocular manifestation of the disease. Histopathologically, RH are composed of capillary vessels and stromal cells, the neoplastic population of the lesion. The origin of these stromal cells remains controversial, even if they are hypothesized to be glial cells. The aim of the present study was to investigate neuronal and microvascular changes of the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer, in which glial cells, neuron

Automated detection of cerebral microbleeds on T2*-weighted MRI.

Cerebral microbleeds, observed as small, spherical hypointense regions on gradient echo (GRE) or susceptibility weighted (SWI) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences, reflect small hemorrhagic infarcts, and are associated with conditions such as vascular dementia, small vessel disease, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, and Alzheimer's disease. The current gold standard for detecting and rating cerebral microbleeds in a research context is visual inspection by trained raters, a process that is both time consuming and subject to poor reliability. We present here a novel method to automate microbl

Evidence on n-3 Fatty Acids and Oleic Acid Role in Retinal Inflammation and Microvascular Integrity: Insight from a Hyperlipidemic Rat Model.

Loss of retinal function due to manifestation of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in hyperglycemia is well addressed. However, the effect of hyperlipidemia on retinal inflammation and microvascular integrity, and the modulatory effects of oxidation-stable oleic acid and long-chain n-3 fatty acids have never been addressed. The objective of this investigation was to assess the retinoprotective effect of oxidation stable oleic acid and oxidation-susceptible EPA + DHA on retinal inflammation and microvascular integrity, under hyperlipidemic conditions. Male Wistar rats were fed with cont

Exploring the effect of hypertension on retinal microvasculature using deep learning on East Asian population.

Hypertension is the leading risk factor of cardiovascular disease and has profound effects on both the structure and function of the microvasculature. Abnormalities of the retinal vasculature may reflect the degree of microvascular damage due to hypertension, and these changes can be detected with fundus photographs. This study aimed to use deep learning technique that can detect subclinical features appearing below the threshold of a human observer to explore the effect of hypertension on morphological features of retinal microvasculature. We collected 2012 retinal photographs which included

PURPOSE: Further insight into the flow characteristics of the vascular features associated with diabetic retinopathy (DR) may improve assessment and treatment of disease progression. The variable interscan time analysis (VISTA) algorithm is an extension of OCT angiography (OCTA) that detects relative blood flow speeds, which then can be depicted on a color-coded map. This study used VISTA to analyze relative blood flow speeds in the microvascular changes associated with DR. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS: Thirteen patients with varying severities of DR treated at New England Eye

Diabetic microcirculatory disturbances and pathologic erythropoiesis are provoked by deposition of amyloid-forming amylin in red blood cells and capillaries.

In the setting of type-2 diabetes, there are declines of structural stability and functionality of blood capillaries and red blood cells (RBCs), increasing the risk for microcirculatory disturbances. Correcting hyperglycemia is not entirely effective at reestablishing normal cellular metabolism and function. Therefore, identification of pathological changes occurring before the development of overt hyperglycemia may lead to novel therapeutic targets for reducing the risk of microvascular dysfunction. Here we determine whether RBC-capillary interactions are altered by prediabetic hypersecretion
