Effects of hearing preservation on psychophysical responses to cochlear implant stimulation.

Previous studies have shown that residual acoustic hearing supplements cochlear implant function to improve speech recognition in noise as well as perception of music. The current study had two primary objectives. First, we sought to determine how cochlear implantation and electrical stimulation over a time period of 14 to 21 months influence cochlear structures such as hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. Second, we sought to investigate whether the structures that provide acoustic hearing also affect the perception of electrical stimulation. We compared psychophysical responses to cochlea…

Investigating the effects of noise exposure on self-report, behavioral and electrophysiological indices of hearing damage in musicians with normal audiometric thresholds.

Musicians are at risk of hearing loss due to prolonged noise exposure, but they may also be at risk of early sub-clinical hearing damage, such as cochlear synaptopathy. In the current study, we investigated the effects of noise exposure on electrophysiological, behavioral and self-report correlates of hearing damage in young adult (age range = 18-27 years) musicians and non-musicians with normal audiometric thresholds. Early-career musicians (n = 76) and non-musicians (n = 47) completed a test battery including the Noise Exposure Structured Interview, pure-tone audiometry (PTA; 0.25-8 kHz), ex…

The Treatment of Juvenile Fibromyalgia with an Intensive Physical and Psychosocial Program.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the short-term and 1-year outcomes of children with fibromyalgia treated with intensive physical and occupational therapy (PT/OT) and psychotherapy. STUDY DESIGN: Children with fibromyalgia seen at a tertiary care hospital were treated with 5-6 hours of intensive PT/OT daily and at least 4 hours of psychosocial services weekly. All medications used for fibromyalgia were discontinued. Children underwent standardized testing, including a visual analog scale for pain; the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Performance, Second Edition; the Bruce treadmill protocol; the Functio

Psychedelic drugs, hippie counterculture, speed and phenobarbital treatment of sedative-hypnotic dependence: a journey to the Haight Ashbury in the Sixties.

The 1960s were a time of social upheaval, wars, vibrant creativity and missed opportunity. Mainstream culture and a psychedelic drug-using counterculture shared a belief in "better living through chemistry'," but they disagreed about the particular chemistry. The Vietnam war and the cold war with the Soviet Union, racial discrimination, and gender roles fueled political activism. "Yes we can" was not a slogan of the time but political activists clearly believed they could change the beliefs, attitudes and behavior of mainstream culture; and they did. Hippie counterculture on the other hand was

Parent-daughter discrepancies in perception of family function in bulimia nervosa.

Eating disorders have traditionally been associated with disturbed family function. Most empirical data regarding this issue, however, were gathered from eating disorders patients. Attitudes, function, and inter-personal relationships were examined within 16 families with a member suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN) and compared to 16 matched healthy families. Perception of family function was significantly more derogatory in bulimic subjects than in their parents, while in control subjects and parents, perception was largely congruent. Subjects suffering from BN perceived their families as le

A person-centered continuity pathway for pediatric contrast-enhanced imaging: sustaining one multisensory context across home, hospital, and scanner transitions.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) require sustained cooperation, procedu … arization window. These encounters are classified as partial deliveries rather than five-module completions. No MRI examination was delivered. CONCLUSIONS: One complete CT pathway was delivered without modifica …

Designing evaluation infrastructure for psychedelic harm reduction at events: a methodological framework with formative mixed-methods field application.

Psychedelic and other psychoactive substance use is increasing in non-clinical environments, including music festivals, concerts, and other large-scale gatherings. As psychedelic use expands beyond clinical settings, policymakers, healthcare systems, event operators, and researchers require evidence-informed frameworks for understanding and responding to psychoactive-related distress in naturalistic environments. Despite the growing presence of psychedelic harm reduction services, few studies have established reproducible methods for documenting their operation, coordination with event-health …

Effectiveness of Warm Compression at the Lumbosacral Region on Labor Pain Intensity During the First Stage of Labor Among Parturient Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Labor pain is a fundamental, complex, and subjective experience during childbirth, characterized by severe discomfort that can be difficult for many women to tolerate. There are many non-pharmacological therapies available for the relief of labor pain, such as aromatherapy, music therapy, acupressure, yoga, breathing exercises, etc. The present study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of warm compression at the lumbosacral region on the intensity of labor pain during the first stage of labor. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted at the labor room of a ter…

Randomized trial of a single-session digital intervention targeting emotion-related beliefs and emotion regulation.

There is a lack of accessible and efficacious interventions for emotionally distressed adults. We developed a single-session digital intervention, called Visitor Mindset, targeting beliefs about negative emotions and awareness, clarity, and acceptance of negative emotions. We evaluated the acceptability, feasibility, and short-term efficacy of Visitor Mindset among emotionally distressed adults (n = 530). Participants were recruited via CloudResearch and randomized to Visitor Mindset or control (nature videos with relaxing music). The primary outcome was emotional distress. Secondary outcomes …

BLACK-ARTS: a qualitative study exploring the insights of black young people with psychiatric disorders and the uses of creative arts therapies to improve mental well-being.

BACKGROUND: Black people experience persistent inequalities in mental health outcomes, access and care quality compared with their white counterparts. These disparities are compounded by structural racism and a lack of culturally competent care within National Health Service (NHS) services. Creative arts therapies (CATs), including music, art, dance and drama therapy, may offer culturally relevant, non-verbal approaches to mental health support for this population. OBJECTIVE: To explore how black young people with mental health challenges and NHS clinicians perceive the usefulness and cultura…
