A Novel Artificial Intelligence System for Endotracheal Intubation.

OBJECTIVE: Adequate visualization of the glottic opening is a key factor to successful endotracheal intubation (ETI); however, few objective tools exist to help guide providers' ETI attempts toward the glottic opening in real-time. Machine learning/artificial intelligence has helped to automate the detection of other visual structures but its utility with ETI is unknown. We sought to test the accuracy of various computer algorithms in identifying the glottic opening, creating a tool that could aid successful intubation. METHODS: We collected a convenience sample of providers who each performe

Urinary symptoms and urodynamic findings in women with pelvic organ prolapse: is there a correlation? Results of an artificial neural network analysis.

BACKGROUND: International official guidelines recommend urodynamic (UDS) evaluation in patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). However, the real benefit of this examination is still the subject of heated and controversial debate. Therefore, we aimed to assess the correlation between urinary symptoms and UDS findings in women with POP through the implementation of a sophisticated computer-based technology in the outpatient workup. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A prospective cohort study was performed in a single, tertiary, urogynaecologic referral department, enrolling consecutive wome

Intrinsic network static and dynamic functional connectivity associated with induced affect.

The examination of the neural mechanisms of affect has shifted from a functional localization approach towards a distributed network neuroscience approach. The present study examined the topology of brain networks relevant to affective processing [i.e. the salience (SN), default mode (DMN), ventral attention (VAN), dorsal attention (DAN), and frontoparietal (FPN) networks] during a novel fMRI-based affect-induction task in which participants (N = 73) mentally visualized neutral, positive, and negative self-nominated acquaintances. We used graph-theory metrics to compute the static (i.e. mean)

A review of fuzzy cognitive maps in medicine: Taxonomy, methods, and applications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: A high percentage of medical errors, committed because of physician's lack of experience, huge volume of data to be analyzed, and inaccessibility to medical records of previous patients, can be reduced using computer-aided techniques. Therefore, designing more efficient medical decision-support systems (MDSSs) to assist physicians in decision-making is crucially important. Through combining the properties of fuzzy logic and neural networks, fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) are among the latest, most efficient, and strongest artificial intelligence techniques for modeling c

Mapping immune targets in peste des petits ruminants virus hemagglutinin: An integrated computational framework for vaccine candidate prioritization.

BACKGROUND: Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is a major transboundary viral pathogen of small ruminants and causes substantial economic losses in endemic regions. The hemagglutinin (H) protein mediates receptor recognition and host-cell attachment and is an important target for vaccine development. This study applied an integrated computational framework to identify conserved immunogenic regions within the PPRV H protein. METHODS: A total of 64 unique PPRV H protein sequences were analyzed using multiple sequence alignment, entropy-based conservation profiling, conservation-aware epito

Multi-model deep learning for dementia detection: addressing data and model limitations.

INTRODUCTION: Deep neural network architectures have transformed medical imaging, particularly in structural MRI (sMRI) classification. However, existing state-of-the-art deep learning models face limitations in preprocessing and feature extraction when classifying dementia-related conditions. This study addresses these challenges by evaluating multiple architectures for dementia diagnosis. METHODS: This study assessed eight pretrained convolutional neural networks (CNNs), a Vision Transformer (ViT), a multimodal attention model, and a capsule network (CapsNet) for classifying three classes:

Can Machines Learn Respiratory Virus Epidemiology?: A Comparative Study of Likelihood-Free Methods for the Estimation of Epidemiological Dynamics.

To estimate and predict the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses, the estimation of the basic reproduction number, R0, is essential. Recently, approximate Bayesian computation methods have been used as likelihood free methods to estimate epidemiological model parameters, particularly R0. In this paper, we explore various machine learning approaches, the multi-layer perceptron, convolutional neural network, and long-short term memory, to learn and estimate the parameters. Further, we compare the accuracy of the estimates and time requirements for machine learning and the approximate Bay

Distinct neural networks for experiential and descriptive representations of natural hazard risk.

Environmental risks are communicated through experiential formats, such as pictures, videos, and virtual reality simulations, and descriptive formats, such as hazard maps and graphs, yet the neural systems engaged by these formats remain unclear. We acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 45 healthy adults while they viewed first-person three-dimensional computer-generated flood videos and official flood maps, along with matched non-flood controls, in a within-subject 2 × 2 factorial design. Participants rated subjective fear after each stimulus. Neural responses were characte

An integrated evolutionary optimization and machine learning framework for predicting pharmacokinetics of nanocarrier-encapsulated drugs.

This study developed a machine learning framework for predicting the pharmacokinetic behavior of nanocarrier systems using integrated molecular, physicochemical, and formulation descriptors. A Multilayer Perceptron Regressor (MLPR) was employed as the baseline predictive model, while evolutionary optimization algorithms were used to optimize the neural-network architecture and training parameters. The framework was evaluated for predicting three pharmacokinetic endpoints: maximum concentration (Cmax), time to maximum concentration (Tmax), and area under the concentration-time curve (AUC). The

A dataset of differentiable biologically derived single-neuron models.

Biological neural networks contain diverse cell types with heterogeneous electrophysiological properties. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) model computational aspects of biology but use homogeneous neurons, limiting realism. A key obstacle to building bio-inspired ANNs is the absence of a database of neuron models that both fit biological data and remain differentiable for gradient-based learning. We present such a database: over 1,000 differentiable single-neuron firing-rate models with accompanying PyTorch code. The models belong to the linear-nonlinear (LN) class, which, for ease of refere

Extending atomic decomposition and many-body representation with a chemistry-motivated approach to machine learning potentials.

Most widely used machine learning potentials for condensed-phase applications rely on many-body permutationally invariant polynomial or atom-centered neural networks. However, these approaches face challenges in achieving chemical interpretability in atomistic energy decomposition and fully matching the computational efficiency of traditional force fields. Here we present a method that combines aspects of both approaches and balances accuracy and force-field-level speed. This method utilizes a monomer-centered representation, where the potential energy is decomposed into the sum of chemically

CNN-based flow field prediction for bus aerodynamics analysis.

The aim of this article is to evaluate the ability of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict velocity and pressure aerodynamic fields in heavy vehicles. For training and testing the developed CNN, various CFD simulations of three different vehicle geometries have been conducted, considering the RANS-based k-ω SST turbulent model. Two geometries correspond to the SC7 and SC5 coach models of the bus manufacturer SUNSUNDEGUI and the third one corresponds to Ahmed body. By generating different variants of these three geometries, a large number of representations of the velocity and pressu

Optimal control for stochastic neural oscillators.

This study develops an event-based, energy-efficient control strategy for desynchronizing coupled neuronal networks using optimal control theory. Inspired by phase resetting techniques in Parkinson's disease treatment, we incorporate stochasticity of the system's dynamics into deterministic models to address neural system intrinsic noise. We use an advanced computational solver for nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations to solve the stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation via level set methods for a single neuron model; this allows us to find control inputs which drive the dyn

EM-SliceCrafter: Distilling Lightweight 2D CNNs for Efficient 3D EM Neuron Segmentation.

Accurate 3D neuron segmentation from large-scale electron microscopy (EM) volumes is a cornerstone of connectomics, yet it is hampered by a trade-off between accuracy and computational efficiency. While 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) offer high accuracy by predicting 3D affinity maps, their high computational cost and limited input size impede their application to large-scale data. To overcome this, we introduce EM-SliceCrafter, a novel framework that employs a lightweight 2D CNN for both efficient and precise 3D neuron segmentation. Our method generates a 3D affinity map by computing

Hippocampal transcriptome analysis in ClockΔ19 mice identifies pathways associated with glial cell differentiation and myelination.

BACKGROUND: ClockΔ19 mice demonstrate behavioral characteristics and neurobiological changes that closely resemble those observed in bipolar disorder (BD). Notably, abnormalities in the hippocampus have been observed in patients with BD, yet direct molecular investigation of human hippocampal tissue remains challenging due to its limited accessibility. METHODS: To model BD, ClockΔ19 mice were employed. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was utilized to identify mutation-related modules, and changes in cell populations were determined using the computational deconvolution CIB

Nonsuicidal self-injury prediction with pain-processing neural circuits using interpretable graph neural network.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) involves the intentional destruction of one's own body tissues without suicidal intent. Prior research has shown that individuals with NSSI exhibit abnormal pain perception; however, the pain-processing neural circuits underlying NSSI remain poorly understood. This study leverages graph neural networks to predict NSSI risk and examine the learned connectivity of neural underpinnings using multimodal data. METHODS: Resting-state functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging were collected from 50 patients with NSSI, 79 healthy controls (HC), and 44 pati

BACKGROUND: Dynamical systems like neural networks based on lateral inhibition have a large field of applications in image processing, robotics and morphogenesis modeling. In this paper, we will propose some examples of dynamical flows used in image contrasting and contouring. METHODOLOGY: First we present the physiological basis of the retina function by showing the role of the lateral inhibition in the optical illusions and pathologic processes generation. Then, based on these biological considerations about the real vision mechanisms, we study an enhancement method for contrasting medical
