Human cornea-derived extracellular matrix hydrogel for prevention of post-traumatic corneal scarring: A translational approach.

Corneal scarring and opacification are a significant cause of blindness affecting millions worldwide. The current standard of care for corneal blindness is corneal transplantation, which suffers from several drawbacks. One alternative approach that has shown promise is the use of xenogeneic corneal extracellular matrix (ECM), but its clinical applicability is challenging due to safety concerns. This study reports the innovative use of human cornea-derived ECM to prevent post-traumatic corneal scarring. About 30 - 40% of corneas donated to the eye banks do not meet the standards defined for cli

Effects of Ibudilast on Retinal Atrophy in Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Subtypes: Post Hoc Analyses of the SPRINT-MS Trial.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ganglion cell + inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thinning, measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT), reflects global neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis (MS). Atrophy of the inner (INL) and outer nuclear layer (ONL) may also be prominent in progressive MS (PMS). The phase 2, SPRINT-MS trial found reduced brain atrophy with ibudilast therapy in PMS. In this post hoc analysis of the SPRINT-MS trial, we investigate (1) retinal atrophy (2) differences in response by subtype and (3) associations between OCT and MRI measures of neurodegeneration. METHODS: In the mu

An Inline System for Air-in-Line Detection and Automatic Occlusion in Peripheral Intravenous Therapy.

The presence of air within intravenous (IV) infusion tubing represents a recognized safety concern in routine peripheral IV therapy, particularly when infusion sources run dry or lines are left unattended. While air-in-line detection systems are available in clinical practice, these approaches commonly involve alarm-based notification following detection events. This alarm-dependent approach leaves a gap in automatic mitigation and end-of-infusion control during common clinical workflows. This work presents the design and operating principle of a compact, low-cost, battery-powered air-in-line

Artifact Suppression in OPM-MEG for Parkinson's Disease Patients With DBS Implants Using Oblique Projection-Based Extended Homogeneous Field Correction.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a critical neuromodulation technique that has been widely applied in the treatment of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and epilepsy. As an important functional neuroimaging modality, magnetoencephalography (MEG) has played a key role in DBS research. In particular, the next-generation MEG based on optically pumped magnetometers (OPM-MEG), offers greater potential for clinical applications. However, the strong electromagnetic interference generated by DBS systems makes data acquisition and analysis challenging in OPM-MEG recordings from pat

Decoding non-fullerene acceptors for organic solar cells: a theoretical structure-property-performance perspective.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have become promising next-generation photovoltaic technologies because of their flexibility, solution processability, and light weight. However, the use of traditional fullerene-based acceptors has been hampered by poor absorption, poor tunability, and energy losses that require the fabrication of sophisticated materials like non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). The purpose of this review is to provide multi-faceted theoretical insight into the structure-property-performance relationship in NFAs with emphasis on how electronic structure, optical behavior, charge transpor

Miniaturized fiber-optic bolometer with reduced thermal time constant exhibiting first-order thermal dynamics.

Accurate measurement of transient radiation power is critical for plasma diagnostics in magnetic confinement fusion, where rapid radiation events require high temporal resolution and reliable signal reconstruction. Fiber-optic bolometers (FOBs) based on silicon Fabry-Perot interferometry are attractive alternatives to resistive bolometers because of their compact size, electromagnetic-interference immunity, remote sensing capability, and compatibility with high-temperature and high-vacuum environments. However, conventional FOB designs can exhibit slow and non-first-order thermal responses bec

Expanding Metabolic Online Monitoring Capabilities in 96-Deepwell Microtiter Plates by Combining Optoelectronic O2 and CO2 Sensors.

To increase the information content in early stages of bioprocess development, various technologies have been introduced for monitoring cultivations in microtiter plates (MTPs). Besides spectroscopical measurements, like in the BioLector technology, optical measurements with luminescent sensors, placed directly in the cultivation medium, became widely established. Monitoring the oxygen transfer rate (OTR) is a key technology for bioprocess development, as it allows mass balancing. At the same time, it is a criterion for a rational scale-up of cultivations. Although this technology has recently

Permittivity-asymmetric qBIC metasurfaces for refractive index sensing.

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide exceptional light confinement due to their inherent decoupling from radiative channels. Small symmetry breaking transforms BIC into quasi-BIC (qBIC) that couples to free-space radiation enabling ultra-high-quality-factor (Q-factor) resonances desirable for refractive index (RI) sensing. In practical implementations, geometric asymmetry is typically employed. However, since the radiative loss remains fixed once fabricated, such metasurfaces exhibit only a horizontal shift of the resonance spectrum in RI sensing, without modification of its overall sh
