OBJECTIVES: We sought to delineate the risk factors for infective endocarditis (IE) in patients undergoing transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TCPVR).
BACKGROUND: Despite the therapeutic benefits of TCPVR for treatment of dysfunctional right ventricular outflow tracts, IE is a major complication of the approach. Specific hemodynamic gradients and patient immune status as predisposing factors for IE are largely unexplored.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients who had undergone TCPVR at UCLA between October 2010 and October 2017. Cases of IE were diagnosed based on t

We performed 52 cemented ankle arthroplasties for painful osteoarthritis (OA) (25) or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (27) using an ankle prosthesis with a near-anatomical design. We assessed the patients radiologically and clinically for up to 14 years using an ankle scoring system. The preoperative median scores were 29 for the OA group and 25 for the RA group and at ten years were 93.5 and 83, respectively. Six ankles in the OA group and five in the RA group required revision or arthrodesis. Survivorship analysis of the two groups showed no significant differences with 72.7% survival for the OA g

BACKGROUND: Although postoperative complications of lower limb amputations and complications related to prosthetics are well known, complications before prosthetic fitting are less often emphasized in literature. There are no Saudi studies documenting the complications before prosthetic fitting where there is high rise in dysvascular amputation, and early prosthetic provision remains a challenge.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the complications following major lower limb amputations (MLLAs).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study.

AIMS: Safety concerns surrounding osseointegration are a significant barrier to replacing socket prosthesis as the standard of care following limb amputation. While implanted osseointegrated prostheses traditionally occur in two stages, a one-stage approach has emerged. Currently, there is no existing comparison of the outcomes of these different approaches. To address safety concerns, this study sought to determine whether a one-stage osseointegration procedure is associated with fewer adverse events than the two-staged approach.
METHODS: A comprehensive electronic search and quantitative da

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Bone cement implantation syndrome (BCIS) typically occurs during bone cementation and prosthesis insertion. Almost all of the models used to explain BCIS are based on studies related to hip arthroplasty. BCIS induced by bone cement implantation in superficial wounds has not been reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old man with chronic osteomyelitis of the left tibia (Cierny - Mader type II), who developed BCIS after covering the infected bone surface with antibiotic-loaded bone cement. BCIS presented as acute massive pulmonary exudation an

Synthetic grafts have been widely used in cardiac and vascular surgery since the mid-1970s. Considering the relative lack of randomized clinical trials or systematic analyses in the field of prosthetic large vessel diameter replacement, we reviewed the literature on the long-term performance and surgical management of complications of Dacron® grafts in both thoracic and abdominal aorta reconstruction and in the pediatric population. MedLine, Embase and Cochrane Library databases were searched for meta-analyses, reviews, clinical trials, and case reports pertinent to the study object. Aortic re

PURPOSE: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support is a widely accepted treatment option for patients with cardiogenic shock, but it is still related to a high incidence of severe complications and death. We present an alternative implantation technique to prevent life-threatening vascular complications.
METHODS: Between January 2008 and January 2011, a total of 28 patients with acute myocardial failure and consecutive cardiogenic shock required ECMO as supportive treatment. Pre-implantation procedures were isolated CABG, CABG combined with mitral valve reconstruction or ventricular

BACKGROUND: Composite tissue allotransplantation (CTA) is a newly emerging field of transplantation that involves the simultaneous transfer of multiple tissues with differing antigenicity. Hand transplantation, the most widely recognized form of CTA, aims to improve function and the quality of life of upper limb amputees.
METHODS: In 1999, an institutional review board-approved hand transplantation protocol was implemented at the Jewish Hospital, University of Louisville. Suitable patients were evaluated and underwent hand transplantation. The surgical technique was akin to that used in limb

Heterotopic ossification (HO) status post total hip arthroplasty is a relatively common phenomenon with clinical significance in approximately 5% of all cases. Risk factors appear to include males with osteoarthritis, particularly with marked osteophyte formation, and those with ankylosing spondylitis or diffuse idiopathic spinal hyperostosis. Previous hip surgery, or previous ectopic bone in the same or contralateral hip are definite predisposing factors. Although meticulous surgical technique is critical in any operation, the suggestions that carelessness in dissection or tissue handling, or

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosing prosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains challenging, as no single test can definitively confirm or rule out infection. Current diagnostic criteria rely on a combination of clinical, laboratory, and microbiological data. Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) has emerged as a potential biomarker for PJI, particularly in acute cases. However, its diagnostic role in chronic PJI and aseptic failures is not well established. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of synovial LCN2 in chronic PJI.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of patients undergoing re

Periprosthetic infection is a frequent complication of implant-based breast reconstruction, often resulting in implant removal, additional surgery, and increased costs. This study evaluated whether polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) discs impregnated with vancomycin and tobramycin, placed at tissue expander insertion, reduce infection rates in breast reconstruction. A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted of 91 patients who underwent two-stage pre-pectoral tissue expander reconstruction performed by a single surgeon between October 2021 and November 2024. Sixty-seven patients received antibi
