Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is an endemic disease in Ethiopia; however, data on animal TB in the Somali region remain minimal. This cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2017 to June 2018 to estimate the prevalence of BTB in cattle, camels, and goats, identify associated risk factors, and assess community awareness of the disease. A total of 982 animals were tested using Comparative Intradermal Tuberculin Test (CIDT), with results interpreted at ≥4 mm and ≥2 mm cut-off points. In addition, a semi-structured questionnaire was administered to 110 animal owners to evaluate community know…

UNLABELLED: Tuberculosis (TB) spreads through the air, yet the physical conditions that permit effective airborne transmission remain poorly defined. Although early 20th-century guinea pig studies demonstrated efficient transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), this experimental paradigm has not been reestablished in modern high-containment facilities. Here, we show that airflow can impose constraints that suppress or permit biologically effective exposure between infected and susceptible hosts. Using a guinea pig model of animal-to-animal exposure, we combined transmission experiments

Screening for tuberculosis infections (TBI) using the tuberculin skin test or interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) is crucial in controlling the global TB burden. This study evaluates the performance of a new IGRA for the detection of T-cell responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Blood samples from 34 adults with tuberculosis disease (TB) and from 30 children with TB, TBI or without TB were analyzed using the prototype Quan-T-Cell TB (EUROIMMUN). The pediatric samples were additionally measured using the established QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus assay (Qiagen). Clinical performance and int

BACKGROUND: Around one-quarter of the global population has latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). If left untreated, LTBI has 5-10% lifetime risk of developing into TB. Interferon-gamma release Assays (IGRAs) are more sensitive than the tuberculin skin test for LTBI detection. However, the high cost and complexity of IGRAs are barriers to adoption in resource-constrained settings. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of a more affordable IGRA, Standard E TB-Feron (TBE), among different risk groups in Bangladesh.
METHODS: 532 participants of all age groups were enrolled from the TB

BACKGROUND: Prevention of drug-resistant tuberculosis is a global health priority. However, trials evaluating the effectiveness of treating Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection among contacts of persons with drug-resistant tuberculosis are lacking.
METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial comparing 6 months of daily levofloxacin (weight-based doses) with placebo to treat M. tuberculosis infection. The trial population comprised household contacts of persons with bacteriologically confirmed rifampicin-resistant or multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis in Vietnam. Con

BACKGROUND: Microbiologic diagnosis of childhood tuberculosis may be difficult. Oral swab specimens are a potential noninvasive alternative to sputum specimens for diagnosis.
METHODS: This was a prospective diagnostic accuracy study of oral swab specimens (buccal and tongue) for pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis in children (aged ≤ 15 years) in 2 South African hospital sites. Children with cough of any duration as well as a positive tuberculin skin test result, tuberculosis contact, loss of weight, or chest radiograph suggestive of pulmonary tuberculosis were enrolled. This study was aimed at exploring whether latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) contributes to the pathogenesis of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases in a TB endemic setting. We screened 198 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with tuberculin skin test (TST) and studied 61 (median DAS28-ESR = 6.3) who were positive. Whole blood T cell proliferative responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) membrane (MtM) antigens, including the latency-induced protein alpha crystallin (Acr), were determined by flow cytometry using Ki67 expression as the marker for nuclear proliferation. Background: Tuberculin skin test and interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) show limitations in diagnosing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and poorly predict progression to active tuberculosis. This study will explore detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( M.tb) DNA in CD34 + peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as a biomarker for LTBI and monitoring chemoprophylaxis response. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, 120 household contacts (60 HIV positive and 60 HIV negative) will be recruited. BACKGROUND: The goal of tuberculosis elimination put forward in the End TB Strategy prioritizes diagnosis and treatment of incipient and subclinical TB, recently defined by key stakeholders as "asymptomatic, early pre-clinical disease during which pathology evolves". Regarded as indicative of a high risk of TB progression, considerable efforts have been made to identify these cases through exploration of biomarkers. The present study aimed to evaluate simple scoring systems for TB exposure as screening tools for subclinical TB, the only identifiable of the incipient and subclinical disease sta

BACKGROUND: Childhood tuberculosis (TB) is a major health problem worldwide, especially in developing countries. In 2015, there are estimated 950,000 cases of childhood TB. Since most TB in children is paucibacillary, this gives rise not only to problem in diagnosing but also in monitoring the response to anti-TB treatment as well. Soluble urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR), a glycosylphosphatidylinositol-linked membrane protein of various cells of immune system, is one of the potential biomarkers to be used in the management of TB. The objective of this study is to study th

OBJECTIVE: Aortitis is an exceedingly rare manifestation of tuberculosis. We describe 11 patients with tuberculous aortitis (TA).
METHODS: Multicenter medical charts of patients hospitalized between 2003 and 2015 with TA in Paris, France, were reviewed. Demographic, medical history, laboratory, imaging, pathologic findings, treatment, and follow-up data were extracted from medical records. TA was considered when aortitis was diagnosed in a patient with active tuberculosis.
RESULTS: Eleven patients (8 women; median age, 44.6 years) with TA were identified during this 12-year period. No patien

OBJECTIVES: Tuberculosis transmission among healthcare workers (HCWs) and patients is due to the level of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) circulation in the community and in the healthcare settings where HCWs are active. In contrast, most papers about dentistry report that dental HCWs (DHCWs) and patients are at relatively high risk, mainly based on tuberculosis case series that occurred in the 80's-90's. This meta-narrative review was designed to evaluate the tuberculosis risk in dentistry accounting for the historical-geographical contexts.
DATA: All available studies reporting data on MT i
