STUDY OBJECTIVE: To evaluate appendiceal endometriosis (AE) prevalence and risk factors in endometriotic patients submitted to surgery.
DES … sessed any correlation between demographic, clinical, and surgical variables and AE. In our center, appendectomy was performed using a selective approach. Appendix removal was performed in case of gross abnormalities of the organ, such as enlargement, dilation, tortuosity, or discoloration of the organ or the presence of suspected endometriotic implants.

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the post-operative outcomes of open and laparoscopic appendicectomy in children.
DESIGN: Record linkage analysis of administrative hospital (Admitted Patient Data Collection) and emergency department (Emergency Department Data Collection) data.Participants, setting: Children under 16 years of age who underwent an appendicectomy in a public or private hospital in New South Wales between January 2002 and December 2013.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Association between type of appendicectomy and post-operative complications within 28 days of discharge, adjusted for pat

OBJECTIVES: To develop and assess the performance of a diameter-based logistic predictive model and a derived 3-category interpretive scheme for the sonographic diagnosis of paediatric appendicitis.
METHODS: Appendiceal diameters were extracted from reports of ultrasound examinations in children and young adults. Data were used to generate a logistic predictive model which was used to define negative, equivocal and positive interpretive categories. Diagnostic performance of the derived 3-category interpretive scheme was compared with simulated binary interpretive schemes.
RESULTS: Six hundre

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata is a very rare benign condition of the peritoneal cavity that may mimic peritoneal carcinomatosis or metastatic leiomyosarcomas. It mainly develops in association with pregnancy, but is also rarely associated with endometriosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old Asian woman presented to our hospital with abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. Her abdominopelvic computed tomography scan showed a 1.2cm-sized nodule at the appendiceal tip, but no other abnormal findings. We suspected acute appendicitis and performed an exploratory laparos

"Laparoscopic assisted appendicectomy" refers to visualization of abdominal cavity, identification of appendix, drawing the appendix out through the port wound and appendicectomy. The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcome of the procedure of laparoscopic assisted appendicectomy. In this prospective study patients with appendicitis were randomly selected for laparoscopic assisted appendicectomy from August 2007 to February 2009 in the Department of Surgery, Modernized District Hospital, Joypurhat, Bangladesh. Out of 73 patients Laparoscopic assisted appendicectomy was performed suc

BACKGROUND: We report a case of an atypical presentation of acute appendicitis in an adult due to an undiagnosed congenital gut malrotation.
OBJECTIVE: The obvious benefit of observation with serial examinations followed by the use of computed tomography (CT) is discussed in aiding in the diagnosis for atypical presentations of appendicitis.
CASE REPORT: A 45-year-old man who presented with epigastric pain and vomiting was diagnosed with acute left-sided appendicitis on CT scan. The patient's appendix was located in the left lower quadrant of the abdomen due to undiagnosed congenital gut mal

A 49-year-old man underwent appendicectomy through a Lanz incision for necrotic appendicitis. He subsequently developed pelvic abscess in the postoperative period, which was drained under computed tomography (CT) guidance. The bacteriology of pus swabs taken during appendicectomy and abscess drainage revealed coliforms. Six days after appendicectomy, the patient had an acute collapse due to rupture of the spleen, which was treated by splenectomy. CT of the abdomen at the time of abscess drainage had confirmed a normal spleen. Histopathological examination of the spleen revealed nonspecific acu

OBJECTIVE: To compare the safety and efficacy of antibiotic treatment versus appendicectomy for the primary treatment of uncomplicated acute appendicitis.
DESIGN: Meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
POPULATION: Randomised controlled trials of adult patients presenting with uncomplicated acute appendicitis, diagnosed by haematological and radiological investigations.
INTERVENTIONS: Antibiotic treatment versus appendicectomy.
OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure was complications. The secondary outcome measures were efficacy of treatment, length of stay, and incidence of

We present the first two cases of acute neonatal appendicitis operated on through the laparoscopic approach. Acute neonatal appendicitis is uncommon and rarely considered by clinicians when assessing the neonatal acute abdomen. Our two cases demonstrate the potential value of diagnostic laparoscopy in the acute neonatal abdomen that poses a diagnostic dilemma. Furthermore, technical modifications of well-established laparoscopic techniques in the older child enable its use in neonates as a therapeutic tool.

Priapism is a sustained erection that is maintained for over 4 hours in the absence of sexual stimulation [Postgrad Med J. 2006;82(964):89-94; J Urol. 2003;170:1318-1324]. Distinction is made between low- and high-flow variants [J Urol. 2003;170:1318-1324; Cardiovasc Intervent Radiol. 2002;25(4):326-329]. Low-flow priapism (LFP) and acute appendicitis are rarely associated. Including ours, there are 4 cases reported in the literature, all of which have occurred in children. The complications of LFP are potentially serious and include loss of the phallus altogether. Treatment of LFP is should b

The authors present a case of enterobiasis of the appendix. Enterobius infection is an uncommon cause of acute appendicitis. Preoperative diagnosis of pinworm infestation is almost impossible unless there is a strong clinical suspicion. Parasites may produce symptoms which resemble acute appendicitis. Careful observation of the appendix stump may lead to intraoperative diagnosis of enterobiasis. A quick diagnosis and appropriate treatment may prevent future complications.

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIP) is an uncommon disorder that may be of primary or secondary origin. We report a case of a 37-year-old woman with CIP due to inflammatory disorder of unknown origin involving the skin (eosinophilic fasciitis), the lungs (decreased diffusion capacity) and the gastrointestinal tract. History, clinical examination, plain abdominal film, barium X-ray and colonoscopy established a diagnosis of recurrent pseudo-obstruction. A full-thickness biopsy was performed during explorative laparotomy, and histological examination revealed findings compatible with an

PURPOSE: The management of appendiceal masses (AM) in children remains controversial. In this study, we evaluated primary laparoscopic drainage (PLD) for efficacy.
METHODS: Eleven (11) consecutive cases of AM (mean age, 8.1 +/- 2.8 years) treated between 2000 and 2004 were the subjects for this study. All had PLD on presentation. If the appendix was seen easily seen after PLD, a laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) was also performed.
RESULTS: Eight (8) patients underwent PLD alone (LD group) and 3 underwent PLD and LA (LDLA group). In the LD group, the mean operating time was 87.9 +/- 23.2 minute…

The finding of a normal or inflamed vermiform appendix within an inguinal hernia is termed Amyand's hernia. It is extremely rare in children, especially in infants and neonates. When it occurs, it is usually misdiagnosed as an irreducible or strangulated inguinal hernia, and the accurate diagnosis is made intraoperatively. We report two cases of Amyand's hernia in premature neonates. Both patients presented on admission with signs and symptoms indicating a strangulated right inguinal hernia, and the accurate diagnosis was made intraoperatively. One of them had progressed to local peritonitis.
