Maternal Psychological Resilience During Pregnancy and Newborn Telomere Length: A Prospective Study.

OBJECTIVE: In the context of the importance of elucidating the determinants of the initial, newborn setting of telomere length (TL), it is increasingly evident that maternal stress and stress-related processes during pregnancy play a major role. Although psychological resilience may function as a buffer, research in this area has not yet examined its potential role vis-à-vis that of stress. The authors examined the relationship between maternal psychological resilience during pregnancy and newborn TL. METHODS: In a sample of 656 mother-child dyads from the Prediction and Prevention of Preecla

Serospatial epidemiology of zoonotic Coxiella burnetii in a cross section of cattle and small ruminants in northern Nigeria.

The persistent and highly transmissible Coxiella burnetii is a neglected infection that negatively affects reproductive parameters of livestock. It is also of zoonotic importance and has been reported to cause devastating human infections globally. Domestic ruminants represent the most frequent source of human infection. Data from Nigeria are very few and outdated. There is a significant gap in up-to-date information on the exposure, spatial distribution and risk factors of infection of this important disease. The exposure to C. burnetii was determined using sensitive serological assays in cat

Microbial Communities in Human Milk Relate to Measures of Maternal Weight.

The process of breastfeeding exposes infants to bioactive substances including a diversity of bacteria from breast milk as well as maternal skin. Knowledge of the character of and variation in these microbial communities, as well as the factors that influence them, is limited. We aimed to identify profiles of breastfeeding-associated microbial communities and their association with maternal and infant factors. Bilateral milk samples were collected from women in the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study at approximately 6 weeks postpartum without sterilization of the skin in order to capture the inf

Time scales and wave formation in non-linear spatial public goods games.

The co-evolutionary dynamics of competing populations can be strongly affected by frequency-dependent selection and spatial population structure. As co-evolving populations grow into a spatial domain, their initial spatial arrangement and their growth rate differences are important factors that determine the long-term outcome. We here model producer and free-rider co-evolution in the context of a diffusive public good (PG) that is produced by the producers at a cost but evokes local concentration-dependent growth benefits to all. The benefit of the PG can be non-linearly dependent on public go

Women's Experiences of Emotional Recovery from Childbirth-Related Perineal Trauma: A Qualitative Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum health care program in Iran is limited to the first six weeks of delivery and only focuses on women's physical problems. It seems that the issue of emotional recovery is underestimated in postnatal women with prenatal injuries. This study was designed to explore women's experiences of emotional recovery from childbirth-related perineal trauma. METHODS: This qualitative content analysis was performed on 22 postnatal women with perineal trauma during labor at Omol-banin Hospital from the 20th of April to 25th of December in Mashhad, Iran in 2016. The participants were

The Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome and dentofacial anomalies diagnostic: Case reports and literature review.

OBJECTIVE: Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome (SLOS) is an autosomal recessive disorder. It is due to a deficiency of 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR7) that catalyses the reduction of 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC) to cholesterol. The aim of this review is to gather all information, concerning diagnostic characteristics of this syndrome, with an emphasis on intraoral symptom presentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a review of the literature, including articles between 1964 and 2017. Data was collected regarding the clinical diagnosis, pathophysiology and treatment of SLOS patients. Moreo

Population Pharmacokinetics of the Antimalarial Amodiaquine: a Pooled Analysis To Optimize Dosing.

Amodiaquine plus artesunate is the recommended antimalarial treatment in many countries where malaria is endemic. However, pediatric doses are largely based on a linear extrapolation from adult doses. We pooled data from previously published studies on the pharmacokinetics of amodiaquine, to optimize the dose across all age groups. Adults and children with uncomplicated malaria received daily weight-based doses of amodiaquine or artesunate-amodiaquine over 3 days. Plasma concentration-time profiles for both the parent drug and the metabolite were characterized using nonlinear mixed-effects mod

Mapping the asynchrony of cortical maturation in the infant brain: A MRI multi-parametric clustering approach.

While the main neural networks are in place at term birth, intense changes in cortical microstructure occur during early infancy with the development of dendritic arborization, synaptogenesis and fiber myelination. These maturational processes are thought to relate to behavioral acquisitions and the development of cognitive abilities. Nevertheless, in vivo investigations of such relationships are still lacking in healthy infants. To bridge this gap, we aimed to study the cortical maturation using non-invasive Magnetic Resonance Imaging, over a largely unexplored period (1-5 post-natal months).

A retrospective segmentation analysis of placental volume by magnetic resonance imaging from first trimester to term gestation.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the placenta affect 5-7% of pregnancies. Because disturbances in fetal growth are often preceded by dysfunction of the placenta or attenuation of its normal expansion, placental health warrants careful surveillance. There are limited normative data available for placental volume by MRI. OBJECTIVE: To determine normative ranges of placental volume by MRI throughout gestation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional retrospective analysis, we reviewed MRI examinations of pregnant females obtained between 2002 and 2017 at a single institution. We performed se

Endotoxin Activity in Neonates Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Endotoxemia in pediatric cardiac surgical patients is poorly understood. The endotoxin activity assay (EAA) levels were examined in neonates undergoing cardiac surgery in order to assess their reference levels and their association with other pre-, intra-, and postoperative risk factors for gut hypoperfusion. We finally observed if refeeding was associated with modification of endotoxin levels. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, neonates undergoing surgery for correction or palliation were enrolled. Preterm birth, weight below 1.5 kg, the need for extracorporeal membrane oxyg

Effects of human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells on respiratory system mechanics in a murine model of neonatal lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Mononuclear cells (MNCs) have well-documented beneficial effects in a wide range of adult pulmonary diseases. The effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived MNCs on neonatal lung injury, highly relevant for potential autologous application in preterm newborns at risk for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), remain incompletely established. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term morphologic and functional effects of systemically delivered MNCs in a murine model of neonatal lung injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MNCs from cryopreserved cord blood (1 × 106 cells per pup) w

Can we perform a prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa to improve its obstetrical and neonatal outcomes?

INTRODUCTION: Vasa previa (VP) is defined as a condition in which the fetal blood vessels, unsupported by the placenta or the umbilical cord, run through the membranes of the lower uterine segment. It is associated with a high risk of stillbirth by exsanguination. This study aimed to assess the clinical context of diagnosis of VP in order to elaborate a strategy for its prenatal diagnosis and to improve its obstetrical and neonatal outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This historical cohort study covered the period from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2015. All women who gave birth at our obstetri

Contribution of a Comparative Western Blot Method to Early Postnatal Diagnosis of Congenital Syphilis.

Serology has a pivotal role in the diagnosis of congenital syphilis (CS), but problems arise because of the passive transfer of IgG antibodies across the placenta. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of a comparative Western blot (WB) method finalized to match the IgG immunological profiles of mothers and their own babies at birth in order to differentiate between passively transmitted maternal antibodies and antibodies synthesized by the infants against Treponema pallidum Thirty infants born to mothers with unknown or inadequate treatment for syphilis were entered in a re

Prenatal Testosterone Exposure Leads to Gonadal Hormone-Dependent Hyperinsulinemia and Gonadal Hormone-Independent Glucose Intolerance in Adult Male Rat Offspring.

Elevated testosterone levels during prenatal life lead to hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance in adult females. This study evaluated whether prenatal testosterone exposure leads to the development of insulin resistance in adult male rats in order to assess the influence of gonadal hormones on glucose homeostasis in these animals. Male offspring of pregnant rats treated with testosterone propionate or its vehicle (control) were examined. A subset of male offspring was orchiectomized at 7 wk of age and reared to adulthood. At 24 wk of age, fat weights, plasma testosterone, glucose homeostasi

Association of certain chronic maternal diseases with the risk of specific congenital heart defects: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous epidemiological studies have evaluated cases with all congenital heart defects (CHDs), rather than analysing different types of CHD. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible association of certain chronic maternal diseases with the risk of different types of CHD, because the role of possible environmental factors in the origin of CHDs is unclear in the vast majority of patients. STUDY DESIGN: Different types of CHD, diagnosed after lethal outcome (autopsy report) or after surgical intervention (catheter or correction), were evaluated in order to estimate th

Dual effect of CTCF loss on neuroprogenitor differentiation and survival.

An increasing number of proteins involved in genome organization have been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting the importance of chromatin architecture in the developing CNS. The CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) is a zinc finger DNA binding protein involved in higher-order chromatin organization, and mutations in the human CTCF gene cause an intellectual disability syndrome associated with microcephaly. However, information on CTCF function in vivo in the developing brain is lacking. To address this gap, we conditionally inactivated the Ctcf gene at early stages of mouse brain
