Competitive adsorption-driven CO2/N2 separation in monolayer fullerene membranes with funnel-shaped pores.

Efficient CO2/N2 separation is critical for advancing carbon capture technologies to mitigate climate impacts from industrial emissions. In this study, we model an idealized, defect-free monolayer fullerene membrane featuring funnel-shaped nanochannels to investigate the CO2/N2 separation mechanism by combining first-principles calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. The unique nanochannel geometry induces a dual mechanism: (1) competitive adsorption preferentially enriches CO2 at the membrane surface and (2) nanopore confinement creates a pronounced difference in free energy barriers

Genetic transformation and CRISPR/Cas12a-mediated gene editing of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) employing a transient protoplast system.

Fagus sylvatica L. (European beech) is a dominant hardwood forest tree species across Central Europe, supporting diverse ecosystem services and forming the basis of a significant market for high-value timber. However, climate change increasingly threatens beech vitality and productivity, making molecular insights into its stress resilience and functional validation of underlying genes urgently needed. Here, we report a protocol for protoplast isolation from seedling leaves and demonstrate transient genetic transformation and CRISPR/Cas-mediated genome editing in F. sylvatica. PEG-mediated tran

Leaf Isohydricity as a Predictive Axis for Divergent Drought-Induced Mortality Pathways Across Subtropical Tree Species.

Understanding the mechanisms of drought-induced tree mortality is essential for predicting forest vulnerability under climate extremes. Leaf isohydricity has been proposed as a key trait shaping drought survival, yet whether it consistently explains interspecific mortality differences and whether mortality pathways diverge between isohydric and anisohydric strategies remain unclear. Here we imposed an extreme-drought experiment on saplings of 25 subtropical tree species across the isohydric-anisohydric spectrum. We quantified key hydraulic traits, including xylem embolism resistance (P50, P88)

The Globalized Automotive Industries Have Failed to Improve the Overall Carbon Productivity but Exhibit a Polarized Distribution.

Improving carbon productivity is essential for simultaneously achieving sustainable development goals and tackling climate change. While the Global Value Chains (GVCs) division enhances productive efficiency, its impact on carbon productivity remains elusive. Here we integrated the GVCs theory with the Environmental Expanded Input-output model to investigate the highly globalized automotive manufacturing industry. We found that CO2 emissions intensity, the inverse of carbon productivity, fluctuated between 0.37 and 0.47 kg/USD in automotive manufacturing GVCs during 2001-2021. Notably, develop

Thermal carry-over: lasting impacts of early life heat stress on morphology and flight performance in solitary bee Osmia bicornis.

Climate warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves, yet the lasting effects of short, extreme thermal events during development on pollinators remain poorly understood. Early life heat stress may generate persistent carry-over effects that influence adult morphology and performance, with consequences for fitness and ecosystem functioning. We experimentally tested how moderate and extreme developmental heatwaves affect adult morphology and flight performance in the red mason bee (Osmia bicornis), a key pollinator across its broad distribution and a model species for solitary

Multiomics studies reveal how ambient temperature changes govern cellular responses of Chlamydomonas.

Photosynthetic protists, known as microalgae, face increasing temperatures due to climate change. The green biflagellate alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Chlamydomonas) serves as a model for thermoregulation. While responses to thermal stress are well characterized, much less is known about the impact of ambient temperature shifts. Understanding microalgal responses to environmental temperature changes is critical, as these primary producers drive ecosystem productivity and food web dynamics. Here, Chlamydomonas grew mixotrophically at ambient temperatures from 18 °C to 33 °C. Transcriptomic pr

Metabolomic analysis of Yunnan cigar tobacco leaves: impact of geography and climate on flavor characteristics and machine learning-based origin traceability.

To investigate how Yunnan's distinctive geographical and climatic conditions shape the unique metabolic profile of its cigar tobacco leaves (CTLs), and to establish a reliable method for origin traceability using machine learning, a non-targeted metabolomics analysis was conducted on 71 CTL samples collected from the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, and Yunnan, including Lincang, Pu'er, and Yuxi within Yunnan. A total of 778 highly reliable metabolites were identified. Influenced by Yunnan's high altitude, large diurnal temperature variation, intense ultraviolet radiation, and relative dryness,

Reframing pandemic preparedness: an intelligence-led solidarity model for multi-layered emergencies.

The convergence of infectious disease outbreaks, climate shocks, and conflict is exposing fundamental limitations in existing global health preparedness systems, which remain largely fragmented and disease-specific. Epidemics increasingly occur within multi-layered emergencies, where overlapping risks interact to overwhelm fragile health systems and complicate response efforts. This perspective examines structural gaps in current preparedness approaches, including siloed financing, limited integration of multi-sectoral intelligence, and constrained institutional autonomy. Drawing on a structur

Heat stress, respiratory dysbiosis, and poultry pathobiome: A comprehensive review of chronic respiratory disease in chickens.

The poultry respiratory microbiome is increasingly recognized as a critical determinant of poultry health, mucosal immunity, and host resistance to opportunistic pathogens. Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD) exerts a severe economic toll on the global broiler industry. While conventionally attributed to specific etiological agents such as Mycoplasma gallisepticum, disease progression is fundamentally tied to broad ecological dysbiosis within the respiratory tract. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the functional roles and compositional dynamics of the poultry respirator

Water activity for n-component mixtures from molecular dynamics simulations via Kirkwood-Buff theory.

Kirkwood-Buff (KB) theory connects measurable thermodynamic properties with radial distribution functions and particle-number fluctuations accessible from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Although KB theory has been used to determine molar volumes, isothermal compressibilities, and solute or solvent activities from MD data, activity calculations have largely been focused on binary mixtures. In this work, we extend the application of KB theory to the calculation of water activity in multicomponent aqueous solutions with an arbitrary number of independent thermodynamic components. We adapt a

Testing the "niche centroid hypothesis" in flea-mammal networks from the palearctic: species' centrality across their environmental niches.

A species' centrality in a network is expected to decrease with distance from the centroid of its environmental niche. We investigated the variation of a species' centrality in flea-mammal networks across the space of its niche for 30 flea and 21 small mammal species occurring in 10-46 networks from different localities in the Palearctic. We characterized the environmental niche of a flea or a host species using the ellipsoid envelope model, based on a species' occurrence points and climatic, soil, and vegetation data. We found significant relationships between centrality in a network and the

An adaptive client selection method for long tailed scene classification in autonomous driving.

Collaborative autonomous driving utilizing Federated Learning (FL) is frequently constrained by long-tailed data distributions and perceptual imbalances. Implementing federated learning for environmental scene classification in autonomous driving faces severe challenges due to the long-tailed and non-IID distribution of real-world climatic data. To address this, this paper proposes FedRare, a client selection framework based on a multi-dimensional utility function, integrating scenario criticality ([Formula: see text]), distribution rarity ([Formula: see text]), and local update quality ([Form

ENSO redistributes hot-dry-windy exposure hours to reorganize winter wheat tail risk.

Large-scale climate modes such as ENSO influence crop production, yet the pathways linking remote variability to local losses remain unclear. Here, we link the El Niño-Southern Oscillation to winter wheat risk across China using heading-harvest hot-dry-windy hours from hourly ERA5-Land and 1981-2020 county-level yields. ENSO does not shift exposure uniformly; it redistributes probability mass along the HDW-hour distribution in a region-dependent way, changing the likelihood of high-exposure seasons. This imprint widens and left-shifts the yield-anomaly distribution and thickens the negative ta

Differences in global multi-regional photovoltaic expansion from 1980 to 2050: A focus on demand, recycling, and local-supply exposure for critical minerals.

Net-zero targets are driving rapid global photovoltaic (PV) expansion, shifting the energy transition from an energy challenge to a mineral-demand challenge. Using a dynamic material flow model, this study assesses the critical mineral (CM) demand and regional local-supply exposure associated with PV modules, supporting power systems, and storage across nine global regions during 1980-2050 under three climate scenarios. Results show that: (1) by 2050, cumulative global PV capacity reaches ∼16,500-21,000 GW, representing a ∼36.67-46.67-fold expansion, while cumulative CM demand totals 169.27-22

Transforming Plant Viruses into Vectors for Next-Generation Agriculture-A Review.

Plant viral vectors have evolved from tools for transient gene expression into a versatile platform for precise genetic intervention, offering a rapid, transgene-free alternative to conventional crop transformation. This review critically assesses their engineering for scalable field application, moving beyond foundational techniques like virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). We highlight how advanced vector design, including deconstructed genomes and synthetic regulatory circuits enhances cargo capacity, specificity, and biosafety. The integration of viral delivery with CRISPR-Cas systems has

ThoR: A Motion-Dependent Physics-Informed Deep Learning Framework with Constraint-Centric Theory of Functional Connections for Rainfall Nowcasting.

Accurate precipitation nowcasting is crucial for mitigating the impacts of extreme weather, especially as climate change increases their frequency and severity. Traditional methods, such as numerical weather prediction and radar extrapolation, face limitations in short-term and high-resolution forecasting. Recently, while deep learning approaches have advanced nowcasting by learning spatiotemporal patterns from radar data, they often suffer from blurry results due to uncertainty predictions and limited physical consistency. To deal with these challenges, we propose ThoR, a Motion-Dependent Phy

Single-cell RNA sequencing and PANDORA-seq reveal the pivotal role of piRNA in heat stress-induced testicular injury.

Global climate change and the greenhouse effect have accelerated the decline in semen quality of male animals. PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), a newly discovered class of non-coding RNAs, play a crucial role in spermatogenesis. However, the molecular mechanisms of piRNAs in testicular heat stress remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the impact of environmental temperature on semen quality in mammals, using 23,385 data points from pigs as a representative species. We constructed a mouse testicular heat stress model and performed in vitro functional validation of selected piRNAs

Identification of the exposure pathway to micro-scaled biogenic silica debris via diet and its potential effect in promoting esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has remained highly prevalent for decades in certain regions, such as the Taihang Mountains in China, though its etiology remains unclear. The previous study unveiled silica fragments in resected ESCC tissues in this region, raising a hypothesis about their relationship with ESCC. Yet, the exposure pathway of these silica fragments and their role in the high incidence of ESCC remain unclear. Here, we report micro-scaled needle-like biogenic silica debris (NL-BSDs) as contaminants in wheat flour, primarily originating from densest siliceous outgrowths o
