Association of serum melatonin with dietary patterns and dietary nutrients in chinese population: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary intake plays a pivotal role in sustaining optimal melatonin levels, while the relationship between dietary patterns and circulating melatonin levels remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the associations between dietary patterns, nutrient intake, and serum melatonin levels in the Chinese population. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 6,521 Chinese adults. Three dietary patterns were identified through principal component analysis. Multivariable linear regression was used to assess the associations between dietary patterns and serum melatonin levels. The

The DDE recombinases: diverse roles in acquired and innate immunity.

BACKGROUND: The RAG proteins required for V(D)J recombination of immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor genes in the acquired immune response contain a magnesium ion-binding site termed a DDE site, composed of D (aspartic acid) and E (glutamic acid) amino acids. A similar DDE-like magnesium binding site also is present in transposases, retroviral integrases, and the innate antiviral response enzymes RNAse H and RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). OBJECTIVE: To help clinicians understand immunodeficiency that results from deficiencies of RAG protein functions, such as severe combined immunodefic

Dietary Habits and Nutrient Deficiencies in a Cohort of European Crohn's Disease Adult Patients.

Wrong dietary habits, such as the Western-style diet, are considered important risk factors for the development of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs). Nevertheless, the role of dietary patterns in the clinical management of IBD patients has not been fully investigated yet. Fifty-four patients diagnosed with active Crohn's disease (CD) were enrolled and subjected to nutritional intake analysis through a weekly food diary. Nutritional patterns were analyzed, and nutrient intake was compared with those of 30 healthy subjects (HS). Blood levels of cholesterol, folic acid, minerals (K, Mg, Fe) and

An examination of the association of selected toxic metals with total and central obesity indices: NHANES 99-02.

It is conceivable that toxic metals contribute to obesity by influencing various aspects of metabolism, such as by substituting for essential micronutrients and vital metals, or by inducing oxidative stress. Deficiency of the essential metal zinc decreases adiposity in humans and rodent models, whereas deficiencies of chromium, copper, iron, and magnesium increases adiposity. This study utilized the NHANES 99-02 data to explore the association between waist circumference and body mass index with the body burdens of selected toxic metals (barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, molybdenum, lead, antim

Nutritional and metabolic profile of children with epidermolysis bullosa.

The clinical features of epidermolysis bullosa (EB) include oral, pharyngeal, gastrointestinal, and total-body blistering. This results in the potential for decreased oral intake, malabsorption, anemia, and depressed visceral protein stores, and a multifactorial etiology for the development of malnutrition and growth retardation. Thus, it was the purpose of this study to document the nutritional and metabolic profile of seven children with junctional or recessive dystrophic EB as compared to seven age- and sex-matched controls. Each child underwent a comprehensive nutritional assessment, inclu

Editorial policy of Magnesium Research: general considerations on the quality criteria for biomedical papers and some complementary guidelines for the contributors of Magnesium Research. Society for the Development on Magnesium Research.

The quality criteria of biomedical journals--and of 'Magnesium Research' as such--are being given a new insight. This has practical implications for the contributors and the editors. General considerations on the patterns of evaluation of scientific papers highlight five types of errors, that may be incurred in submitted manuscripts. 1. The information conveyed may remain ambiguous: for example, lack of discrimination between acute and chronic patterns, or confusion between the clinical and toxicological consequences of pharmacological and physiological studies: for example it is a real scient

Nutritional Status in Spanish Children and Adolescents with Celiac Disease on a Gluten Free Diet Compared to Non-Celiac Disease Controls.

Patients who follow a gluten-free diet (GFD) may be prone to nutritional deficiencies, due to food restriction and consumption of gluten-free products. The aim was to assess nutritional status in celiac children and adolescents on a long-term GFD. A cross-sectional age and gender-matched study in 70 celiac and 67 non-celiac volunteers was conducted, using dietary, anthropometric, biochemical parameters, and assessing bone mineral density and physical activity. Adequacy of vitamin D intake to recommendations was very low, in both groups, and intakes for calcium and magnesium were significantly

Low magnesium status in plants enhances tolerance to cadmium exposure.

In a transcriptomic study of magnesium (Mg) starvation in Arabidopsis, we identified several genes that were differentially regulated which are involved in the detoxification process of nonessential heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd). We further tested the impact of low Mg status on Cd sensitivity in plants. Interestingly, a -Mg pretreatment of 7 d alleviated the bleaching of young leaves caused by Cd. No or little difference in Cd tissue concentration between the +Mg and -Mg plants was observed, suggesting that lower Cd toxicity was probably not attributable to modified root to shoot transloca

Vitamins and Minerals for Energy, Fatigue and Cognition: A Narrative Review of the Biochemical and Clinical Evidence.

Vitamins and minerals are essential to humans as they play essential roles in a variety of basic metabolic pathways that support fundamental cellular functions. In particular, their involvement in energy-yielding metabolism, DNA synthesis, oxygen transport, and neuronal functions makes them critical for brain and muscular function. These, in turn, translate into effects on cognitive and psychological processes, including mental and physical fatigue. This review is focused on B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B9 and B12), vitamin C, iron, magnesium and zinc, which have recognized roles in the

[Pellagra].

Pellagra is a systemic disturbance caused by a cellular deficiency of niacin, resulting from inadequate dietary nicotinic acid and/or its precursors, the essential amino-acid tryptophan. In Europe and North America cases of pellagra are rarely encountered, but in some developing countries this disease is frequent, and is the most frequent clinical feature of nutritional deficiency of adult. The principal causes of pellagra are: nutritional niacin deficiency; chronic alcoholism; gastro-intestinal malabsorption; some medications (5-fluoro-uracil, isoniazid, pyrazinamide ehtionamide, 6-mercaptopu

The importance of the refeeding syndrome.

In this review we discuss the refeeding syndrome. This potentially lethal condition can be defined as severe electrolyte and fluid shifts associated with metabolic abnormalities in malnourished patients undergoing refeeding, whether orally, enterally, or parenterally. It can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Clinical features are fluid-balance abnormalities, abnormal glucose metabolism, hypophosphatemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypokalemia. In addition, thiamine deficiency can occur. We describe which patient groups are more at risk for this syndrome and the clinical manageme

Nutritional adequacy of the EAT-Lancet diet: a Swedish population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The EAT-Lancet planetary health diet emphasises plant-based foods while including moderate amounts of animal-sourced foods. Simulation-based modelling studies suggest that the diet can provide adequate micronutrients, but concerns remain about potential deficiencies as studies have used different methodologies and few have assessed nutrient intakes using both dietary and biomarker data in population-based studies. This study aimed to evaluate nutrient adequacy, defined as the ability of a diet to provide sufficient essential vitamins and minerals to meet physiological requirements,

Calcium deficiency is associated with malnutrition risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often have the condition of malnutrition, which can be presented as sarcopenia, micronutrient deficiencies, etc. Trace elements (magnesium, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, plumbum and manganese) belonging to micronutrients, are greatly vital for the assessment of nutritional status in humans. Trace element deficiencies are also the main manifestation of malnutrition. Calcium (Ca) has been proved to play an important part in maintaining body homeostasis and regulating cellular function. However, there are still a lack of studies on

Hypomagnesemia and Acute Cognitive Decline in Older Adults: An Evaluation of Clinical Practice and Cognitive Outcomes at a National Health Service (NHS) Trust in England.

Introduction Magnesium is essential for regulating cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and respiratory functions. Hypomagnesemia in older adults is often overlooked and insufficiently managed. Inadequate monitoring and correction of hypomagnesemia may leave old and frail patients more vulnerable to acute cognitive decline, which in some cases can be preventable. This study assessed the current management of hypomagnesemia in older adults admitted to the geriatric wards of an NHS Trust and its association with acute cognitive decline, which is defined in this study as any sudden deterioration from b

Breaks in genomic DNA and within the p53 gene are associated with hypomethylation in livers of folate/methyl-deficient rats.

Male weanling Fischer 344 rats were fed either a semipurified diet deficient in the methyl donors methionine, choline, and folic acid or a supplemented control diet for a period of 9 weeks. At intervals of 2, 5, and 7 days, 3 weeks, and 9 weeks after initiation of the respective diets, the relative level of DNA strand breaks and the degree of cytosine methylation were quantified in high molecular weight DNA and also within the p53 gene in liver samples from these rats. Genome-wide strand break accumulation was associated with progressive genomic hypomethylation and increased DNA methyltransfer

Macronutrient, Micronutrient Supplementation and Monitoring for Patients on GLP-1 Agonists: Can We Learn from Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery?

Background/Objectives: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are increasingly prescribed for people living with obesity and type 2 diabetes due to their efficacy in reducing appetite and body weight. However, by inducing caloric restriction and altering gastrointestinal physiology, GLP-1RAs may predispose patients to nutritional deficiencies. This review aimed to synthesise current evidence on energy, protein, vitamin, and mineral status in GLP-1RA users, and contextualises these findings with metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) guidelines. While metabolic and bariatric surger
