Epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Gram-negative bacteria causing urinary tract infections in the Asia-Pacific region: 2009-2010 results from the Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART).

In 2009, the Study for Monitoring Antimicrobial Resistance Trends (SMART) was expanded to include surveillance of Gram-negative pathogens ca … aceae comprised 28.2% of all isolates. We also found a high rate of resistance to carbapenems among Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa causing UTI. Interestingly, according to 2012 CLSI breakpoints, approximately 33.4% of ESBL producers were still susceptible to ceftazidime. However, this in vitro efficacy of ceftazidime needs to be validated in vivo by c …

Ventilator-associated pneumonia in trauma patients is associated with lower mortality: results from EU-VAP study.

BACKGROUND: Differences in trauma patients developing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) are described regarding etiology and risk factor … Haemophilus influenzae (14.3% vs. 1.9%, p = 0.02), and the most prevalent pathogen in late VAP was Acinetobacter baumannii (12.2% vs. 44.4%, p < 0.0001). BACKGROUND: This study compares the periodontal clinical profile and the composition of the subgingival microbiota of human immunodeficiency … y detected in H-CP+ subjects compared to H+CP+ and controls. In contrast, Enterococcus faecalis and Acinetobacter baumannii were more commonly found in HIV-infected than in non-HIV-infected subjects (P <0.05). [Antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of nosocomial gram negative pathogens: results from MYSTIC study in Hacettepe University Adult Hospital (2000-2004)].

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Gram negative pathogens (n: 699) isolated from nosocomial infections in Hacettepe University Adult Hospital included in MYSTIC programme between 2000-2004 were determined by Etest (AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) using CLSI criteria. Of the total Escherichia coli (n: 179), Klebsiella pneumoniae (n: 168), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (n: 179) and Acinetobacter baumannii (n: 173) isolates, 55% were from patients in inpatient clinics and 45% were from patients in intensive care units. In Silico Design and In Vitro Assessment of Bicyclic Trifluoromethylated Pyrroles as New Antibacterial and Antifungal Agents.

QSAR studies on the number of compounds tested as S. aureus inhibitors were performed using an interactive Online Chemical Database and Modeling Environment (OCHEM) web platform. The predictive ability of the developed consensus QSAR model was q2=0.79±0.02. The consensus prediction for the external evaluation set afforded high predictive power (q2=0.82±0.03). The models were applied to screen a virtual chemical library with anti-S. aureus activity. Six promising new bicyclic trifluoromethylated pyrroles were identified, synthesized and evaluated in vitro against S. aureus, E. coli, and A. baum

Mucin Binding Reduces Colistin Antimicrobial Activity.

Colistin has found increasing use in treating drug-resistant bacterial lung infections, but potential interactions with pulmonary biomolecules have not been investigated. We postulated that colistin, like aminoglycoside antibiotics, may bind to secretory mucin in sputum or epithelial mucin that lines airways, reducing free drug levels. To test this hypothesis, we measured binding of colistin and other antibiotics to porcine mucin, a family of densely glycosylated proteins used as a surrogate for human sputum and airway mucin. Antibiotics were incubated in dialysis tubing with or without mucin,

Invasive guests: the role of non-oral bacteria in oral dysbiosis and systemic health.

BACKGROUND: The human oral cavity harbors a diverse microbiota essential for maintaining oral and systemic health. While most resident microorganisms are commensals adapted to specific oral niches, increasing evidence highlights the presence of non-oral bacteria, including Helicobacter pylori, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacteriaceae, Staphylococcus aureus, Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridioides difficile. Traditionally associated with other body sites, these bacteria may enter the oral cavity and, under favorable ecological conditions, persi…

[Translated article] The "Trojan horse" against antimicrobial resistance: Siderophore conjugates and public health.

OBJECTIVE: Antimicrobial resistance, particularly in carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales such as KPC-type, represents a critical threat to public health in Latin America, associated with high mortality rates and increased healthcare costs. This systematic review aims to evaluate the therapeutic potential of siderophore-drug and siderophore-peptide conjugates against priority multidrug-resistant pathogens, including Enterobacterales, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter baumannii, analyzing their efficacy, mechanisms of action, and implementation challenges. METHOD: A systematic sear…
