BACKGROUND: The beneficial effects of human milk on decreasing rates of paediatric infections such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and sepsis have been clearly demonstrated. Donor breastmilk has been encouraged as the milk of choice when a mother's own breastmilk is not available. The objectives of this study were to assess feasibility of providing donor breastmilk to infants in a resource limited Neonatal Prem Unit (NPU). In addition we sought to determine whether donor breastmilk could be safely pasteurized and administered to infants without any adverse events.

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for perinatal deaths in Pakistan, where perinatal mortality is still very high.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted in Sindh Government Lyari General Hospital, Karachi from 1 May 2006 to 30 April 2008. During this period, all perinatal deaths and each live infant delivered following every perinatal death (which were taken as controls) were enrolled. Demographic information, birthweight, booking status, associated obstetric risk factors, stillbirth or neonatal death and the cause of death were recorded.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a technique that would permit the identification of dendritic cells (DC) in small volumes of preterm neonatal cord blood in order to investigate neonatal immune response in relation to infection and preterm labor.
METHODS: We used three-color flow cytometry and a fixed quantity of fluorospheres to determine absolute cell numbers. Four red cell lysis techniques, sample dilution, time delay experiments, and a comparison with traditional Ficoll cell separation techniques were performed.
