Frostbite Prevalence, Risk Factors, and CIVD-Based Screening Among Servicemen Stationed in Northern Subarctic/Alpine Regions: A Cross-sectional Survey.

Frostbite remains a common cold injury in military units operating in severe climates, yet the epidemiology and physiologic screening markers for vulnerable personnel are not fully characterized. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 1,250 male servicemen stationed in northern subarctic/alpine regions, combining a structured questionnaire with anthropometry (skinfolds), estimated maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max; Bruce protocol), and a standardized hand/foot cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) protocol. Frostbite was reported by 688 participants (55.0%), predominantly first-degree; feet (78.1%) a

Household satisfaction with health services and response strategies to malaria in mountain communities of Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Measuring satisfaction with health service delivery in fragile communities provides an opportunity to improve the resilience of health systems to threats including climate change. Additionally, understanding factors associated with the choice of response strategies to certain public health threats provides an opportunity to design context-specific interventions. METHODS: We used polytomous latent class analyses to group participants' responses and an additive Bayesian modelling network to explore satisfaction with health service delivery as well as factors associated with response

Exploring water, sediment, and avifauna from an urban recreational lagoon: focus on WHO priority pathogens.

AIMS: Environmental dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens is a growing global concern under the One Health framework, yet remains underexplored in biodiverse and human-impacted ecosystems such as Brazil's coastal lagoons. This study assessed the occurrence and distribution of AMR bacteria, including WHO-designated critical-priority pathogens, in water, sediment, and avifauna from Lagoa da Conceição, a coastal lagoon in southern Brazil. METHODS AND RESULTS: From December 2022 to November 2023, 96 environmental and 251 avian samples were collected and analyzed using selective

Coupling of spectroscopy and nitrogen-oxygen isotopes unveils the mechanisms of dissolved organic matter and nitrate pollution in lakes within the agro-pastoral transition zone.

Lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are subjected to severe ecological stress, such as organic pollution, eutrophication, and salinization, due to climate change and human activities. This study investigates Chagannur Lake, a typical arid-region lake that is representative and ecologically sensitive in Northern China's agro-pastoral ecotone, to uncover its pollution characteristics and mechanisms. We employed fluorescence spectroscopy and stable isotope analysis to trace dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nitrate sources. The DOM composition was dominated by microbial metabolic byproducts and

Microbial Communities Drive Methane Fluxes From Floodplain Lakes-A Hydrological Gradient Perspective.

This study examined the impact of methanotrophic bacteria and methanogenic archaea on CH4 fluxes from floodplain lakes at various successional stages, analysing their interactions with physicochemical properties of water. Seasonal microbiological and hydrochemical studies of 10 floodplain lakes in the Łyna River floodplain, characterised by varying hydrological connectivity, revealed that methanotrophic bacteria (MOB) and mGen significantly influenced CH4 and CO2 emissions. The microbial structure, expressed as the MOB/mGen ratio, was associated with a gradient of CH4 flux rates specific to ea

Technological pathways for cost-effective steel decarbonization.

The iron and steel sector is central to national net-zero efforts but remains hard to abate1,2. Existing decarbonization roadmaps fail to guide technology choices for individual plants, given their heterogeneity and economic constraints3-5. Here, by integrating two global plant-level datasets and forecasted technology costs, we develop a model to identify the least-cost technology pathway for each plant worldwide in alignment with national carbon-neutrality targets. In the short term (pre-2030), energy efficiency improvements and scrap reuse are the cheapest decarbonization strategies, reducin

Integrating Regional Equitable Transition into China's Pursuit of Carbon Neutrality and Air Quality Goals.

Geographically vast countries worldwide face the challenge of balancing equity concerns while combating climate change and environmental pollution. China's pursuit of carbon neutrality and air quality goals should ideally promote the convergence of both national mitigation targets and regional equitable transition, but the two are rarely considered together. Here, we develop an environmentally extended multiregional input-output model for China, which covers multiple environmental impacts for three benchmark years, to investigate the performance of national CO2 and air pollutant reductions and

Protecting clinician autonomy and patient safety within the climate debate: the case for desflurane in modern anaesthesia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The anaesthesia community should play a more active role in shaping sustainable healthcare practices. Current environmental measures, such as the European Commission's impending restriction on desflurane (an inhaled anaesthetic) from January 2026, risk unintended consequences for patient care and clinical autonomy. RECENT FINDINGS: While desflurane's high global warming potential (GWP) has been the central justification, GWP is an oversimplified metric that fails to reflect the transient atmospheric behaviour of short-lived gases like desflurane compared with long-lived gas

Two Novel S-methyltransferases Confer Dimethylsulfide Production in Actinomycetota.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methanethiol (MeSH), and dimethylsulfide (DMS) are abundant sulfur gases with crucial roles in global sulfur cycling, chemotaxis, and climate regulation. Microorganisms can S-methylate H2S and MeSH, which can be cytotoxic, to yield non-toxic DMS via MddA or MddH enzymes in largely terrestrial or marine environments, respectively. However, the potential of many important and abundant bacteria like Actinomycetota is underestimated due to unknown Mdd enzymes. Here, two novel S-adenosine-methionine-dependent H2S and MeSH S-methyltransferases, MddM1 and MddM2 are identified,

Dynamics of fluid-driven fractures across material heterogeneities.

Fracture propagation is highly sensitive to the conditions at the crack tip. In heterogeneous materials, microscale obstacles can cause propagation instabilities. Macroscopic heterogeneities modify the stress field over scales larger than the tip region. Here we experimentally investigate the propagation of fluid-driven fractures through multilayered materials. We focus on analyzing fracture profiles formed upon injection of a low-viscosity fluid into a two-layer hydrogel block. Experimental observations highlight the influence of the originating layer on fracture dynamics. Fractures that form

Policy and market forces delay real estate price declines on the US coast.

Despite increasing risks from sea-level rise (SLR) and storms, US coastal communities continue to attract relatively high-income residents, and coastal property values continue to rise. To understand this seeming paradox and explore policy responses, we develop the Coastal Home Ownership Model (C-HOM) and analyze the long-term evolution of coastal real estate markets. C-HOM incorporates changing physical attributes of the coast, economic values of these attributes, and dynamic risks associated with storms and flooding. Resident owners, renters, and non-resident investors jointly determine coas

Elevated CO2 Increased Antibiotic Resistomes in Seed Endophytes: Evidence from a Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) Experiment.

Climate warming affects antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil and the plant microbiome, including seed endophytes. Seeds act as vectors for ARG dissemination in the soil-plant system, but the impact of elevated CO2 on seed resistomes remains poorly understood. Here, a free-air CO2 enrichment system was used to examine the impact of elevated CO2 on seed-associated ARGs and seed endophytic bacteria and fungi. Results indicated that elevated CO2 levels significantly increased the relative abundance of seed ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), especially those related to beta-lactam resis

Unraveling the Ultrafast Photochemical Dynamics of Nitrobenzene in Aqueous Solution.

Nitroaromatic compounds are major constituents of the brown carbon aerosol particles in the troposphere that absorb near-ultraviolet (UV) and visible solar radiation and have a profound effect on the Earth's climate. The primary sources of brown carbon include biomass burning, forest fires, and residential burning of biofuels, and an important secondary source is photochemistry in aqueous cloud and fog droplets. Nitrobenzene is the smallest nitroaromatic molecule and a model for the photochemical behavior of larger nitroaromatic compounds. Despite the obvious importance of its droplet photoche

Stable carbon isotope evolution of formaldehyde on early Mars.

Organic matter in the Martian sediments may provide a key to understanding the prebiotic chemistry and habitability of early Mars. The Curiosity rover has measured highly variable and 13C-depleted carbon isotopic values in early Martian organic matter whose origin is uncertain. One hypothesis suggests the deposition of simple organic molecules generated from 13C-depleted CO derived from CO2 photochemical reduction in the atmosphere. Here, we present a coupled photochemistry-climate evolution model incorporating carbon isotope fractionation processes induced by CO2 photolysis, carbon escape, an

Building resilient surgical systems that can withstand external shocks.

When surgical systems fail, there is the major collateral impact on patients, society and economies. While short-term impact on patient outcomes during periods of high system stress is easy to measure, the long-term repercussions of global crises are harder to quantify and require modelling studies with inherent uncertainty. When external stressors such as high-threat infectious disease, forced migration or climate-change-related events occur, there is a resulting surge in healthcare demand. This, directly and indirectly, affects perioperative pathways, increasing pressure on emergency, critic

Bayesian spatio-temporal modeling to assess the effect of land-use changes on the incidence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the Brazilian Amazon.

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease caused by a protozoan of the genus Leishmania and is considered one of the most important neglected tropical diseases. The Brazilian Amazon Forest harbors one of the highest diversity of Leishmania parasites and vectors and is one of the main focuses of the disease in the Americas. Previous studies showed that some types of anthropogenic disturbances have affected the abundance and distribution of CL vectors and hosts; however, few studies have thoroughly investigated the influence of different classes of land cover and land-use changes on

Modelling Lassa virus dynamics in West African Mastomys natalensis and the impact of human activities.

Lassa fever is a West African rodent-borne viral haemorrhagic fever that kills thousands of people a year, with 100 000 to 300 000 people a year probably infected by Lassa virus (LASV). The main reservoir of LASV is the Natal multimammate mouse, Mastomys natalensis. There is reported asynchrony between peak infection in the rodent population and peak Lassa fever risk among people, probably owing to differing seasonal contact rates. Here, we developed a susceptible-infected-recovered ([Formula: see text])-based model of LASV dynamics in its rodent host, M. natalensis, with a persistently infect
