HIV-associated salivary gland disease refers to the pathology in head and neck lesions such as ranula, salivary gland swelling, xerostomia, and benign lymphoepithelial cysts in the parotid gland. Here, we present a unique case of the ranula patient with HIV infection treated with OK-423 sclerotherapy. Case report: The patient was a 42-year-old Japanese male with a few months history of oral floor swelling. Computed tomography (CT) showed a low-density area limited within the right floor of the mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a distinct T2-high intensity area localized on the s

The comprehensive "one-stop shop" ultrasound evaluation of an infertile woman, performed around cycle days 5 to 9, will reveal abundant information about the anatomy and morphology of the pelvic organs and thereby avoid costly radiation and iodinated contrast exposure. We propose a two-dimensional and three-dimensional ultrasound to examine the appearance and shape of the endometrium, endometrial cavity, myometrium, and junctional zone, to assess for müllerian duct anomalies fibroids, adenomyosis, and polyps. We then evaluate the adnexa with grayscale ultrasound and Doppler, looking for ovaria

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is an invasive parasitic infection of the central nervous system caused by the larval stage of the tapeworm Taenia solium. The clinical manifestations of NCC depend on the parasitic load and location of infection, as well as the developmental stage of the cysticerci and host immune response, with symptoms ranging from subclinical headaches to seizures, cerebrovascular events, and life-threatening hydrocephalus. Racemose NCC represents a particularly severe variant of extraparenchymal NCC characterized by the presence of multiple confluent cysts within the s

Study Design Case report. Objective Cysticercosis (parasitic infection caused by Taenia solium) is the most common parasitic infection of the nervous system. However, spinal neurocysticercosis is rare. It can present as an extraspinal or intraspinal lesion, with intramedullary being the rarest location. The symptoms can vary from vague backache and radiculopathy to cauda equine syndrome. Methods We report a 32-year-old man who presented with neurocysticercosis in the lumbar spine and cauda equine syndrome. He had low backache for 1 month, hesitancy in micturition, and decreased perianal sensat

PURPOSE: To evaluate the MRI findings of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), including findings on diffusion-weighted images (DWIs) and chemical shift images (CSIs), in patients with acquired cystic disease of the kidney (ACDK) in relation to the histopathologic findings.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two radiologists retrospectively reviewed the MRI findings of 10 RCCs in seven consecutive patients with ACDK. They evaluated the signal intensities (SIs) and signal homogeneity of the lesions on T2-weighted images, DWIs, and T1-weighted images. Thereafter, they evaluated the cytoplasmic fat in the lesions by

Polycystic kidney disease is characterized by the progressive enlargement of kidneys due to expanding fluid-filled cysts with the rate of renal volume increase held to be a marker of disease progression. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to monitor changes in renal volume in patients with polycystic kidney disease; however, it has not been effectively used in mice to monitor changes in kidney volume during drug treatment studies. We used a powerful 9.4-T horizontal bore magnetic resonance scanner to track changes in kidney volume in pcy/pcy mice, an ortholog of nephronophthisis type 3.

Cysticercosis occurs when humans become intermediate hosts of Taenia solium after ingesting its eggs. It is the most common helminthic infection of the nervous system, and is endemic in Latin America, Asia and Africa, as well as in industrialized nations with a high immigrant influx of people coming from endemic areas. Neurocysticercosis is a pleomorphic disease due to individual differences in the number and location of the parasites within the nervous system as well as to differences in the severity of the host's immune reaction against the parasite. Common clinical manifestations include ep

BACKGROUND: The cytologic diagnosis of joint and articular surface-based lesions traditionally has been accomplished by examination of fluids or effusions. Although exfoliative cytology remains an accurate diagnostic test, not all joint-based lesions will produce effusions that are amenable to this type of examination. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) represents an excellent alternative to traditional cytologic or histologic methods of diagnosis in joint pathology.
METHODS: The authors reviewed FNA materials for the period 1992-2001 from lesions of joint spaces and periarticular soft tissues. All

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled cysts in both kidneys, in addition to a variety of extra-renal manifestations. The PKD1 gene product, polycystin-1, encodes a novel protein with a putative role in cell-cell/cell-matrix interactions. The present study we focused on the (sub)cellular localization of polycystin-1 in cultured cells, and on its tissue distribution in various organs. In Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells, several polyclonal antibodies showed intense staining at the sites of interaction between adjacent cells,

OBJECTIVE: We present the case histories of three premature infants with congenital posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus.
STUDY DESIGN: The timing of the lesion was monitored in utero in two of the three cases. Magnetic resonance imaging studies (prenatal in one case, within 24 hours of birth in all three cases) established the duration of the lesions and thereby added to the ultrasonographic findings.
RESULTS: All three patients demonstrated a similar pattern of lesions, consisting of (1) unilateral germinal matrix hemorrhage with cystic resorption, (2) residual blood in the cerebrospinal fluid wi

Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus granulosus is a zoonotic infection of cosmopolitan distribution. As the clinical manifestations of hydatid disease in man are variable, the diagnosis of the condition presents complex problems for clinicians. Since the parasitic diagnosis of the disease is difficult, the specific diagnosis of the condition relies heavily on immunodiagnostic tests. The recent approach to the diagnosis of hydatid disease in man is primarily based on: (1) a combination of two or three more serological tests to diagnose the condition, as a single test fails to detect all the

Fetal cystic hygroma is a congenital malformation of the lymphatic system appearing as a single or multiloculated fluid-filled cavity, most often in the nuchal region. The malformation is believed to arise from failure of the lymphatic system to communicate with the venous nuchal system. Sometimes the lesion progresses to fetal hydrops, causing fetal death. To further delineate the cause and natural history of this disorder, we have prospectively studied eight cases of cystic hygroma of the neck, detected at gestational ages of 9 to 15 weeks by transvaginal sonography. Three of the eight fetus

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) typically presents in young, obese women with symptoms such as headache, pulsatile tinnitus, and visual disturbances due to raised intracranial pressure. While IIH is commonly diagnosed in the absence of identifiable pathology, it is essential to rule out secondary causes that may mimic its presentation. Because calvarial lesions causing venous outflow obstruction are rare but clinically significant, early imaging is critical to differentiate secondary from idiopathic cases. We report the case of a 16-year-old female with a history of obesity, hyperte

Intestinal pneumatosis (IN) is an uncommon radiological finding defined as the accumulation of air in the gastrointestinal tract wall. Its clinical signs are nonspecific and include symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal pain. It includes benign entities (with subtle symptoms and the accumulation of air in the form of cysts that appear as clustered nodular lesions on the endoscopy, collapsible and soft); or severe cases (symptoms indicative of general health compromise and linear accumulation of air or free fluid suggestive of hollow viscus perforation); which require different management. We

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled cysts in the kidney and end stage renal disease by the fourth or fifth decade of life. Mutations in the PKD1 gene account for 85% of all cases of ADPKD. No curative therapy exists for patients affected by this disease and an underexplored avenue for the treatment of ADPKD is the targeting of epigenetic changes that occur during cystogenesis. Limited data exists on alterations in DNA methylation that are associated with ADPKD. Given the similarities between cyst growth and neoplasi

Neurenteric cysts (NEC) are uncommon, benign, congenital lesions. Ventral foramen magnum (FM) location is very rare. The difficulties in diagnosis and management aspects are detailed with a review of the pertinent literature. We report four new cases of ventral FM NEC, all managed surgically and present a literature review of ventral FM NEC. A retrospective analysis of histopathologically confirmed cases of ventral FM NEC, operated from 2010-2013 at our institute, was performed. For review, only those cases of NEC extending from the lower clivus to the C2 level constituting the foramen magnum
