The RIN2 syndrome: a new autosomal recessive connective tissue disorder caused by deficiency of Ras and Rab interactor 2 (RIN2).

Defects leading to impaired intracellular trafficking have recently been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of genodermatoses, such as the Ehlers-Danlos and the cutis laxa syndromes. A new genodermatosis, termed macrocephaly, alopecia, cutis laxa and scoliosis (MACS) syndrome has been described, resulting from a homozygous 1-bp deletion in RIN2. RIN2 encodes the Ras and Rab interactor 2, involved in the regulation of Rab5-mediated early endocytosis. We performed a clinical, ultrastructural and molecular study in a consanguineous Algerian family with three siblings affected by

The natural history, including orofacial features of three patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, dermatosparaxis type (EDS type VIIC).

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) dermatosparaxis type (type VIIC) and the related disease of cattle dermatosparaxis, are recessively inherited connective tissue disorders, caused by a deficient activity of procollagen I N-proteinase, the enzyme that excises the N-terminal propeptide in procollagen type I, type II, and type III. Although well documented in cattle, to date only seven human cases have been recorded, most of them aged under 2 years. We document the natural history of three patients with EDS dermatosparaxis type, two of whom have been reported before the age of 2 years, and one new pat

Using soft tissue graft to prevent mid-facial mucosal recession following immediate implant placement.

BACKGROUND: With advances in dental technology, the placement of immediate implants has progressively gained popularity. However, a common complication that surfaced was mid-facial mucosal recession, which impaired esthetic outcomes. The use of soft tissue grafts has thus been introduced to manage and prevent this undesirable result. To date, no guidelines have been put forward for clinicians to identify the indications for a soft tissue graft during immediate implant placement. Therefore, this manuscript aimed to propose a decision-making model to prevent mid-facial mucosal recession followin

Esthetics in implant-supported prostheses: a literature review.

Esthetics is important for success of implant-supported prostheses. This study aimed to review esthetics concepts for implant treatment. Research in the PubMed database included studies published from 1995 to 2010 with the keywords implant esthetics, implant-supported prostheses, and esthetics. Forty-five studies were evaluated regarding the presurgical planning, surgical phase, and temporary and final restoration phases. It was concluded that esthetics in implant-supported prostheses results from a multidisciplinary approach from planning until insertion of the final restoration.

Do preoperative cutaneous bleeding time tests predict the outcome of intraoral surgical bleeding?

PURPOSE: To determine whether cutaneous bleeding time (BT) is related to perioperative bleeding outcome measures after tooth extraction. To determine whether this investigation is reliable to predict bleeding outcome after an intraoral surgical procedure. METHODS: A prospective clinical pilot study of 30 subjects. Cutaneous BT was evaluated before tooth extraction. After extraction, an oral BT was determined. Subjects were contacted 2-5 hours after extraction to assess further post operative bleeding. RESULTS: The mean cutaneous BT was 2.3 minutes (range 1.5-3.5). The mean oral BT was 9.1 (r

The prevalence of periodontal disease measures in elderly adults, aged 79 and older.

From 1996-98, we examined 449 adults (mean age 85 years) from the 1982 Iowa 65+ Rural Health Study, in the field using headlight, mirror, and periodontal probe. Ninety-six of the 342 dentate subjects were excluded from the follow-up examination due to contraindications to probing, and 10 could not be assessed due to refusals, fatigue or other reasons. For all remaining subjects (n=236), attachment loss, defined as recession plus probing depth, was determined at four sites per tooth. Ninety-one percent of the subjects had at least one site with 4+ mm of attachment loss, 45% had one or more site

Esthetic restoration of a single-tooth dental implant using a subepithelial connective tissue graft: a case report with 3-year follow-up.

This case report describes the use of a subepithelial connective tissue graft to restore the gingival papillae and augment ridge soft tissues adjacent to a dental implant. The patient was referred for periodontic and prosthodontic evaluation after the placement of an implant--with the implant head 6.5 mm below the adjacent cementoenamel junction--in an area of inadequate bone volume with deficient interproximal papillae and ridge soft tissues. The resulting esthetic defect was restored by means of a combined technique that used a subepithelial connective tissue graft and an emergence profile-c

Successive removal of periodontal tissues. Marginal healing without plaque control.

The aim of the present study was to compare periodontal healing after successive removal of periodontal tissue components, from the alveolar bone to the dentin surface. The prevailing tissue reaction when adhering PDM was left on the exposed roots was that most of the bone tissue that had been removed from the buccal surfaces had regenerated and the integrity of the PDM between the new alveolar bone and cementum surface had been reestablished. On exposed etched cementum surfaces, 2 prevailing healing results were recorded. In half the number of the roots, the root surfaces were covered by conn

Guided tissue regeneration in surgically-produced furcation defects. An experimental study in the beagle dog.

The aim of the investigation was to evaluate the potential for new attachment formation at various degree III furcation involvements in the beagle dog. 3 differently shaped furcation defects were prepared; one small and one large key-hole defect, and one furcation defect which was part of "circumferential" loss of attachment and bone. 15 beagle dogs were used in the experiments. The furcation defects were surgically created at mandibular premolars in the right and left side of the jaw. Test teeth were subsequently treated according to the GTR principle, while control teeth were treated without

Dental age estimation in adults using the Lamendin criteria: Validation of a bayesian model in the Brazilian population.

Age estimation provides information for biological profile, which is used as an important data during the process of to aid in the identification of bodies of deceased persons. Lamendin et al. proposed a simplified dental age estimation technique for adults based on the analysis of periodontal recession height, root height, and root translucency height. These characteristics were used to build a multi-population database that served in the development of a Bayesian model, known as the Forensic International Dental Database (FIDB). However, before this research, this model did not incorporate d

Treatment of peri-implant recession with a screw-retained, interim implant restoration: A clinical report.

This clinical report describes a patient with an osseointegrated implant and definitive restoration of the maxillary right lateral incisor who was seeking resolution of the recession of the peri-implant tissues which revealed the underlying zirconia abutment. The patient had previously received a connective tissue graft in an unsuccessful attempt to resolve the recession. An undercontoured interim restoration that allowed for soft tissue coronal migration resolved the soft tissue deficiency.

Biomechanical considerations in mandibular incisor extraction cases.

Mandibular incisor extraction can be regarded as a valuable treatment option in certain malocclusions to obtain excellence in orthodontic results in terms of function, aesthetics and stability. This treatment alternative is indicated in clinical situations like mild to moderate class III malocclusion, mild anterior mandibular tooth size excess, periodontally compromised teeth, ectopic eruption of mandibular incisor and minimal openbite tendencies. Unlike in premolar extraction cases, space closure in mandibular incisor extraction cases is unique in which the extraction space will be in the mid
