Examination of the neighborhood activation theory in normal and hearing-impaired listeners.

OBJECTIVE: Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of lexical information on word recognition among normal hearing listeners and individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. The lexical factors of interest were incorporated in the Neighborhood Activation Model (NAM). Central to this model is the concept that words are recognized relationally in the context of other phonemically similar words. NAM suggests that words in the mental lexicon are organized into similarity neighborhoods and the listener is required to select the target word from competing lexical items. Two structural char

An Evidence-Based AI Virtual Assistant for Young People With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Co-Design and Prototype Development.

BACKGROUND: Though attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is thought to be the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder in young people worldwide, there are inequalities in access to psychoeducation and health care support. One way to improve access, potentially increase engagement, reduce health care inequalities, and enhance care is by co-developing digital responsive interventions. These have the potential to support long-term condition management and to act as an adjunct to usual care. Virtual assistants that use large language models can provide information in response to quest…

Impact of Medical Conditions and Area Deprivation on Fundraising Success in Online Crowdfunding: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Web-based crowdfunding is commonly used to defray medical expenses, but it is not fully known which factors determine fundraising success. Previous studies have usually focused on a single disease category at a time or a small number of mutually exclusive diseases, even though a given campaign may seek funding for multiple conditions. In addition, differences in fundraising exist according to socioeconomic status, but whether this association applies across different diseases is unclear. Thus, questions remain about how certain medical conditions and the socioeconomic context of a

Patient-Representing Population's Perceptions of GPT-Generated Versus Standard Emergency Department Discharge Instructions: Randomized Blind Survey Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Discharge instructions are a key form of documentation and patient communication in the time of transition from the emergency department (ED) to home. Discharge instructions are time-consuming and often underprioritized, especially in the ED, leading to discharge delays and possibly impersonal patient instructions. Generative artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) offer promising methods of creating high-quality and personalized discharge instructions; however, there exists a gap in understanding patient perspectives of LLM-generated discharge instructions. A Patient Simulation Framework for Risk Assessment of Conversational Health Care AI: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Conversational AI systems are increasingly being deployed in health care for clinical decision support, but their performance varies substantially across patient communication styles, health literacy levels, and behavioral patterns. Static benchmarks cannot capture multiturn dynamics through which this variation compounds, and no current evaluation framework implements structured AI risk management guidance for conversational health care AI. The result is a structural risk: AI systems may perform well in aggregate while failing disproportionately for the populations they are intend

Persistent Manifold Learning of Protein Properties.

UNLABELLED: Predicting how tightly two biomolecules bind remains a major challenge, in part because different interaction classes present dissimilar interfaces, from compact metal-coordinated pockets to broad, featureless protein surfaces. We introduce persistent manifold learning (PML), a novel computational framework that describes a binding interface as a family of multiscale manifolds. Boundary-Induced Graph Laplacian, a discrete realization of de Rham-Hodge theory, then extracts topological invariants together with nonharmonic spectral information, capturing the geometry of an interface a

Understanding the Engagement and Interaction of Superusers and Regular Users in UK Respiratory Online Health Communities: Deep Learning-Based Sentiment Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Online health communities (OHCs) enable people with long-term conditions (LTCs) to exchange peer self-management experiential information, advice, and support. Engagement of "superusers," that is, highly active users, plays a key role in holding together the community and ensuring an effective exchange of support and information. Further studies are needed to explore regular users' interactions with superusers, their sentiments during interactions, and their ultimate impact on the self-management of LTCs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to gain a better understanding of sentiment distr

Plasma neurofilament light chain as prognostic marker of cognitive decline in neurodegenerative diseases, a clinical setting study.

BACKGROUND: Analysis of selected research cohorts has highlighted an association between plasma neurofilament light (NfL) protein and cross-sectional cognitive impairment as well as longitudinal cognitive decline. However, the findings have yielded inconsistent results regarding its possible application in clinical practice. Despite its potential prognostic significance, the role of plasma NfL in daily clinical practice with unselected patients suffering from cognitive impairment remains largely unexplored. METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional and longitudinal monocentric study enroll
