Role of Zinc and Magnesium in Glycemic Status Among the Saudi Population.

PURPOSE: Certain trace minerals, such as zinc (Zn) and magnesium (Mg), may play a role in glucose regulation and insulin signaling pathways. However, population data from the Middle East are scarce and may differ in terms of dietary and metabolic profiles from those previously studied. We examined the association of circulating and dietary Zn and Mg with prediabetes, insulin resistance, and β-cell function in Saudi adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 1009 Saudi adults aged ≥ 18 years (861 participants with normoglycemia, 148 participants with prediabetes) recruited from Riyadh and Alm

Oral application of magnesium-L-threonate alleviates radicular pain by inhibiting neuro-inflammation dependent central sensitization of rats.

BACKGROUND: We have reported neuro-inflammation is involved in radicular pain by enhancing the efficiency of pain synaptic transmission in spinal level. Recently, peers' studies have confirmed that magnesium deficiency leads to neuro-inflammation, thus contributes to memory and emotional deficits and pain hypersensitivity in antineoplastic agents treated rats. In this study, we explore the effect of oral application of magnesium-L-threonate (L-TAMS) in radicular pain induced by lumbar disc herniation (LDH) of rats and the possible mechanisms. METHODS: Rat model of LDH was induced by autologou…

Nutrition of Pregnant and Lactating Women in the First 1000 Days of Infant.

Nutrition for pregnant and breastfeeding women is fundamental to the development of the child in its first 1000 days and beyond. To evaluate the adequacy of this nutrition, we have relied on historical dietary surveys and on personal French studies (4 studies from 1997 to 2014) involving dietary surveys over 3 days (3D-Diet). Furthermore, our team specialized in lipids has measured the fatty acids of breast milk, which reflect the dietary intake of lipids, from breast milk (1997-2014) and from the lipids of cord blood and maternal fat tissue, in 1997. According to our results, pregnancy needs

Role of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) in the metabolism of phosphorus and calcium immediately after kidney transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Persistence of inappropriately high serum levels of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23), a recently discovered phosphaturic hormone, has been reported to play an important role in the pathogenesis of posttransplant hypophosphatemia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate FGF23 in the early posttransplant period and study the complex associations between FGF23, parathyroid hormone (PTH), 1,25(OH)(2) vitamin D, and phosphate in transplant patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional observational study of 42 adult kidney recipients in the early posttranspl

Relationship of intracellular magnesium of cord blood platelets to birth weight.

Magnesium (Mg(2+)) has an important role in insulin action, and insulin stimulates Mg(2+) uptake in insulin-sensitive tissues. Impaired biologic responses to insulin are referred to as insulin resistance. Diabetic patients and obese subjects are reported to have intracellular magnesium ([Mg(2+)](i)) deficiency. Many epidemiologic studies have disclosed that restricted fetal growth has been associated with increased risk of insulin resistance in adult life. We studied the relationship of [Mg(2+)](i) in cord blood platelets to birth weight. The subjects were 19 infants who were small for gestati

The Role of Disturbed Mg Homeostasis in Chronic Kidney Disease Comorbidities.

Some of the critical mechanisms that mediate chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression are associated with vascular calcifications, disbalance of mineral metabolism, increased oxidative and metabolic stress, inflammation, coagulation abnormalities, endothelial dysfunction, or accumulation of uremic toxins. Also, it is widely accepted that pathologies with a strong influence in CKD progression are diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). A disbalance in magnesium (Mg) homeostasis, more specifically hypomagnesemia, is associated with the development and progression of the comorbi

Seasonal changes in calcium homeostasis affect the incidence of postoperative tetany in patients with Graves' disease.

BACKGROUND: We have found that postoperative tetany occurs in patients with Graves' disease who have secondary hyperparathyroidism caused by a deficiency in calcium and vitamin D concomitant with transient hypoparathyroidism after surgery. There are seasonal variations in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentrations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of seasonal changes in calcium homeostasis on the incidence of postoperative tetany in patients with Graves' disease who undergo subtotal thyroidectomy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was carried out to inv

Improved Magnesium Levels in Morbidly Obese Diabetic and Non-diabetic Patients After Modest Weight Loss.

Serum magnesium (Mg) is reported to be reduced in individuals with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus and has been suggested as a marker for metabolic syndrome. We have studied changes in serum Mg concentrations in a group of obese patients (n = 92) with and without diabetes mellitus after weight loss induced by dieting and bariatric surgery. At inclusion, 11% (10/92) of the population had severe Mg deficiency (< 0.75 mmol/L) and median serum Mg was lower in diabetic (n = 20) compared to non-diabetic (n = 72) patients (p = 0.002). A weight loss of 10 kg after 8 weeks of lifestyle int

Early developmental alterations of low-Mg2+ -induced epileptiform activity in the intact corticohippocampal formation of the newborn mouse in vitro.

The generation, propagation and pharmacological properties of low-Mg2+ -induced epileptiform activity were examined in the intact corticohippocampal formation (CHF) of the newborn (P0-4) mouse in vitro. Multi-site field potential recordings in dentate gyrus (DG), CA3, CA1, entorhinal cortex (EC) and temporal cortex (TC) revealed in 0.2 mM Mg2+ -containing ACSF a stable pattern of spontaneous epileptiform activity consisting of recurrent ictal-like events (ILEs) and interictal events (IEs). Although this activity could be consistently observed as early as P0, ILEs were smaller in amplitude, les

Low [Mg(2+)](o) induces contraction of cerebral arteries: roles of tyrosine and mitogen-activated protein kinases.

The present study was designed to investigate the mechanism of action of low extracellular magnesium ion concentration ([Mg(2+)](o)) on isolated canine basilar arteries and single cerebral vascular smooth muscle cells from these arteries. Low-[Mg(2+)](o) medium (0-0.6 mM) produces endothelium-independent contractions in isolated canine basilar arteries in a concentration-dependent manner; the lower the concentration of [Mg(2+)](o), the stronger the contractions. The low-[Mg(2+)](o) medium-induced contractions are significantly attenuated by pretreatment of the arteries with low concentrations
