Transurethral ultrasound ablation for prostate cancer: MRI-based pre-treatment planning and post-treatment assessment-what the radiologist needs to know.

Transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) is an MRI-guided thermal therapy that enables focal or whole-gland ablation of prostate tissue using real-time MR thermometry and feedback control. It is an emerging treatment option for carefully selected patients with localized prostate cancer, particularly when preservation of urinary and sexual function is an important clinical priority. However, TULSA is not yet an established equivalent to radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy, because available clinical data on long-term oncologic control remain limited. Radiologists should therefore unders

Incidental Cardiovascular Findings in Lung Cancer Screening and Noncontrast Chest Computed Tomography.

While the primary goal of lung cancer screening CT is to detect early-stage lung cancer in high-risk populations, it often reveals asymptomatic cardiovascular abnormalities that can be clinically significant. These findings include coronary artery calcifications (CACs), myocardial pathologies, cardiac chamber enlargement, valvular lesions, and vascular disease. CAC, a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis, is particularly emphasized due to its strong predictive value for cardiovascular events and mortality. Guidelines recommend qualitative or quantitative CAC scoring on all noncontrast chest C

JCAD/KIAA1462: biology, pathophysiology, and translational perspectives in vascular disease.

Junctional cadherin 5-associated protein (JCAD/KIAA1462) is an endothelial junctional protein encoded by a locus robustly associated with coronary artery disease and myocardial infarction in genome-wide association studies. Initially identified as a structural component of endothelial cell-cell junctions, JCAD has since emerged as a mechanosensor and regulator of key intracellular pathways (i.e. Hippo/YAP, PI3 K/Akt, and MAPK/ERK) with functional consequences for endothelial homeostasis, inflammation, and vascular tone. In this review, we summarise the current understanding of JCAD biology, fr

Diagnosis and management of mineral and bone disorders in paediatric kidney transplant recipients: a position statement from the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology.

Children after kidney transplantation (KTx) are prone to mineral and bone disease (MBD) including growth restriction, bone pain, skeletal deformities, fractures, and vascular calcifications. We present a position paper on the diagnosis and management of post-transplant MBD in this population based on the available evidence and the opinion of experts from the European Society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) CKD-MBD, Dialysis and Transplantation Working Groups. PICO (Patient, Intervention, Comparator, Outcomes) questions were generated, and structured literature searches were conducted for a po…

Primary Synovial Chondromatosis Displacing Popliteal Neurovascular Structures: A Case Report.

The purpose of this case report is to raise awareness among clinicians about primary synovial chondromatosis (PSC), including its pathology, imaging findings, and potential complications. Our patient experienced a slip and fall during icy conditions, prompting radiographs that revealed an incidental left knee lesion. A biopsy confirmed synovial chondromatosis, but the patient did not seek treatment at that time. Months later, he noticed a decrease in his range of motion, along with discomfort and swelling in the left knee. Over one year after the fall, the patient presented to our facility wit

[Pathology of Cartilage-to-Bone Crosstalk: A New Angle for Animal Experimental Studies on Osteoarthritis].

Osteoarthritis (OA), a common age-related chronic disease, is characterized by degenerative changes in the joints and surrounding tissues. Traditionally, research on OA has primarily focused on the pathological changes in articular cartilage and its repair. However, with the advancements in animal disease modeling in recent years, especially the widespread use of spatiotemporally specific transgenic mouse models, scholars have gradually come to realize that the subchondral bone also plays an important role in the occurrence and development of OA. That is, the pathological changes in articular

Gardner Fibroma Presenting as a Suspected Encephalocele: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Gardner fibroma (GF) is a rare benign tumor of soft tissues, most frequently described in children and adolescents, and occasionally representing an early manifestation of familial adenomatous polyposis. We report a case of a 14-month-old infant with no relevant medical history who presented with a midline occipital mass. The lesion was well-epithelialized and non-fistulized, with no evidence of pus, cerebrospinal fluid leakage, or inflammation, and measured 7 × 7 × 8 cm. Neurological examination was normal. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneous, hypodense soft tissue mass with punctate

[DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF ELEVATED LIPOPROTEIN(A) IN ISRAEL: CONSENSUS STATEMENT FROM THE ISRAEL SOCIETY FOR RESEARCH, PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND ISRAEL SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES].

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is composed of 2 major protein components, a low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol-like particle containing apolipoprotein B (apo B) that is covalently bound to apolipoprotein(a). Its level is predominantly genetically determined, and it is estimated that 20% to 25% of the population have Lp(a) levels that are associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Elevated Lp(a) is related to increased vascular inflammation, calcification, atherogenesis and thrombosis, and is considered an independent and potentially causal risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular dise

ATF4 Contributes to Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation via Modulating M1 Macrophage Polarization and Inflammation.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a potentially life-threatening vascular disease primarily in the male elderly population, but there is a lack of approved medical therapies to prevent the progression and rupture of AAA. Activating Transcription Factor 4 (ATF4) has been established to be involved in cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure and calcific aortic valve disease. However, the role of ATF4 in the pathogenesis of AAA remains unclear. We found that ATF4 expression was significantly increased in patients with AAA and mouse models of AAA and was mainly confined to macrophages in a

Immune response following transcatheter aortic valve procedure.

Aortic valve stenosis is the most common type of heart valve disease in the United States and Europe and calcific aortic stenosis (AS) affects 2-7% of people aged 65 years and older. Aortic valve replacement (AVR) is the only effective treatment for individuals with this condition. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) has been widely accepted as a minimally invasive therapeutic approach for addressing symptomatic AS in patients who are considered to have a high risk for traditional surgical intervention. TAVR procedure may have a paradoxical effect on the immune system and inflammator

Growth plate closure and therapeutic interventions.

Height gains result from longitudinal bone growth, which is largely dependent on chondrocyte differentiation and proliferation within the growth plates of long bones. The growth plate, that is, the epiphyseal plate, is divided into resting, proliferative, and hypertrophic zones according to chondrocyte characteristics. The differentiation potential of progenitor cells in the resting zone, continuous capacity for chondrocyte differentiation and proliferation within the proliferative zone, timely replacement by osteocytes, and calcification in the hypertrophic zone are the 3 main factors control

Clinical Applications of Photon-counting CT: A Review of Pioneer Studies and a Glimpse into the Future.

CT systems equipped with photon-counting detectors (PCDs), referred to as photon-counting CT (PCCT), are beginning to change imaging in several subspecialties, such as cardiac, vascular, thoracic, and musculoskeletal radiology. Evidence has been building in the literature underpinning the many advantages of PCCT for different clinical applications. These benefits derive from the distinct features of PCDs, which are made of semiconductor materials capable of converting photons directly into electric signal. PCCT advancements include, among the most important, improved spatial resolution, noise

Multimodal Analytical Tools to Enhance Mechanistic Understanding of Aortic Valve Calcification.

This review focuses on technologies at the core of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) and drug target research advancement, including transcriptomics, proteomics, and molecular imaging. We examine how bulk RNA sequencing and single-cell RNA sequencing have engendered organismal genomes and transcriptomes, promoting the analysis of tissue gene expression profiles and cell subpopulations, respectively. We bring into focus how the field is also largely influenced by increasingly accessible proteome profiling techniques. In unison, global transcriptional and protein expression analyses allow for
